The fingerprints of Koala bears are virtually indistinguishable from those of humans, so much so that they could be confused at a crime scene.

I have family and friends in the hills who actually use the pager site, so they know if their is a fire burning in their area and whether they need to put their fire plans into action.

Interesting one i just came across.

The reason firehouses have circular stairways is from the days of yore when the engines were pulled by horses. The horses were stabled on the ground floor and figured out how to walk up straight staircases.

whether it be a useless fact or something funny.

- A 'jiffy' is a unit of time for 1/100th of a second.
- Every time you lick a stamp, you consume 1/10 of a calorie.

I can agree....SAAS should be encrypted but not the Fire Service.

People use the information they hear on the scanner to determine how they will respond i.e. leaving their home during a fire etc.  You cant rely on the CFS or the media to provide you with up to date info on what is happening on the front line.

Also there is rarely if any private information that is given across the fire service radios.

Ok granted it may prove useful on the round up of running grass fires with low crew numbers but they still have to get off and mop up, which requires a minimum of 3 people, which is the minimum you need for a running grass fire attack but is then against SOP's or COSO's or OMG's or Whatever!

« on: August 29, 2008, 09:08:59 PM »
The problem with BMIs is that they differ from people to people regarding results, for instance i have a BMI of 32 but i don't have a gut and a slimish upper body BUT i have big legs from running, footy etc. Your body weight could be distributed over different areas not just your guts. Personally i think occupational therapists should be doing the medicals.

and its cases like this where the doctors discretion should be able to be used.

We can have the biggest fuel loads on record or grass that is dry in November but it all means nothing without the spark!

« on: August 29, 2008, 09:04:31 PM »
The "type 2" or medium pumper is more of a proper fire truck than our "P's" bolted to the back of a tray top truck, so i would expect them to stay in their brigades for probably the full 20 years if thats possible.

Even if they chose to cycle em.....where would they send em?  Those that have pumpers are probably the only ones that deserve them, unless they are going to take the angle of the CFA and give every brigade that has a house, a pumper.

they should be ready with the normal 34's.

Varley Qld was building them so they wouldnt have to wait for the 34's to finish.  If the 34's are about the be delievered im sure we will hear about the P's shortly.

« on: August 27, 2008, 04:46:53 PM »
how about a shared private access road (driveway if you like) with more than one property accessed off that?  under the new scheme all those properties would have the same "address".  (this is a real example in my brigade area affecting 3 properties)

I guess they are numbered like any housing block with multiple structures on it.  1/124 or A/124 or 1232A

Country Fire Service / Re: Fuel Loads
« on: August 26, 2008, 07:17:47 PM »
I can understand why the public tune out when it comes to fire safety.  Every year the CFS comes on the media and says its going to be the worst summer on record due to weather conditions and fuel loadings.

Fuel loadings in the parks continue to grow and always will until a fire comes along....its just nature.  Wouldnt be to worried about it, whatever happens will happen regardless of our response.

Luckily enough down here the pine forests provide a fairly unique fuel loading.  The age of the pines gives you a good indicator as to the fuel loadings below.
