If telstra bigpond is your internet service provider, change to another provider like Internode or Adam like NOW.

Reason:  If you have any problem with your service, dont bother trying to get it fixed, it wont get fixed if its a problem on bigponds end.

Zippy's thoughts: Bigpond is full of algae.

Do they even know what Alarms are, or are they using the term "3rd alarm" just to make people scared? lol

Just like you said, any call could be the big one. I have seen nuisance fire alarms that happen every week turn into working fires that no one is prepared for. They seem to put people into the mind set of “oh its another fire alarm, no need to hurry or gear up, the chief should recall it anytime now.” We need to treat every one like a working fire…..and if you ask my opinion that means pulling lines and throwing ladders on even the B/S calls. This will serve two purposes. One it will obviously have you prepared in case it turns into something, and two it keeps your crew refreshed on how to pull and pack lines, throw ladders, estimate stretches, etc. There is no better training than doing all of this at different locations in your local.

SA Firefighter General / Multi Agency Communications / Adelaide Fire
« on: December 28, 2008, 03:47:08 PM »
When it comes to Multi Agency talkgroups, i heard Yankalilla request one over SES Bravo 1 for a SES incident. I would assume this would be so that there SES appliances could work with CFS appliances and Police.

The Reply from Adelaide fire was that they are unaware of any procedure for allocation of talkgroups,  and "we tend to leave it up to you guys to organize".(including CFS local talkgroups).

Anyone familar with any real procedure for multiagency talkgroups?

Fire Fighter Training / Skill's maintainence & Knowledge Retention
« on: December 23, 2008, 09:32:44 AM »
What sorta techniques have you seen used to help firefighters remember things for longer?

Locally,  a LT gets crew members to go grab an item, explain where its from and its uses, and to return it.   Its a laugh sometimes at the knowledge of where very common items are on the appliances.  Its even more interesting when LT's themselves get asked to grab equipment ;).  Ask a group officer..might get a entirely blank look haha.

Adelaide unleaded petrol prices back under $1 a litre at BP
Article from: The Advertiser
November 24, 2008 03:55pm

FUEL outlet BP On The Run has dropped its unleaded petrol price under $1 a litre for the first time in years.

AdelaideNow has been told the price will remain at 99.9c/L until Wednesday.

Readers reported the price was changed at the BP On The Run on West Tce in the city at about 3.30pm.

The RAA says unleaded prices have not stayed below $1/L for a sustained period since 2004.

Just months ago the unleaded price was 173c/L, but the plunging world oil price has seen fuel prices dip dramatically in recent weeks.

Oil closed at US$49.93 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange overnight - meaning prices have dropped nearly 66 per cent since reaching a record $147.27 a barrel in mid-July.

BP's move will raise pressure on rival fuel companies to follow suit.

Anyone up for a Road trip? :P

The Humour Zone / Surviving a Recession
« on: October 07, 2008, 02:13:13 PM »
Advice during a recession using real facts:

If you had purchased $1,000 of Delta Air Lines stock one year ago,
     you would have $49 left.

With Fannie Mae, you would have $2.50 left of the original $1,000.

With AIG, you would have less than $15 left.

But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drunk
all of the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling
REFUND, you would have $214 cash.

Based on the above, the best current investment advice is to drink
heavily and recycle.  Perfectly logical, but not nec advisable.

Drink up!

So whose been to AFAC,  any interesting stuff to share? i had a lil look around and some nice PPE out there!  quite like the newer style red turnout gear, would be nice for RCR operators.  the lime green Nomex Structure gear seems more impressive than PBI,  looks as if it can breath more.

SA Firefighter General / Crew Rostering
« on: July 29, 2008, 09:28:21 AM »
On the topic of Crew Rostering...i dont entirely agree with it, wont go into it much except, the problem with it, is it can tie people down from normal living activities....we're a volunteer service, we can only provide as much as our lives let us.  There is also the potential for the "same people going to every job", where as with a non-roster system...its whoever turns up.

Its a great system, but theres for's and againsts for it.
