Country Fire Service / GOs/DGOs responding on every call
« on: May 21, 2013, 07:37:59 PM »
Just wondering peoples thoughts.

Listening to a job on the scanner just now there is a DGO responding to a fire alarm. Arrives and assumes incident control, nothing showing. Oncoming appliances downgraded.

This group has a GO or DGO respond on almost every call no matter how minor [ie rubbish fires, fire alarms] and generally arrive first as the incident controller.

Now im happy for them to respond on road crash persons reported, confirmed structures, grassfires TFB days, HAZMAT, significant incidents etc, but in my opinion, not only is responding to EVERY job unnecessary per the CFS response schedule [SOP 2?], but it also deprives brigade officers of any real experience in running jobs and puts another vehicle on the road for no real reason.

So, is it a necessary resource at all jobs? Are brigade officers not trustworthy to run jobs?

Thoughts?

And yet there are some of us that have nominations in and don't get any phone calls direct from STC/Region???? Does this piss anyone else off as well?

Why do we bother to nominate people for courses if this sort of shenannigans continues.

SA Firefighter General / HyperYelp/HyperLo

Is there any reason the new CFS appliances with code 3 microcom sirens are coming out with these functions de-activated? It is easy enough to change, but i am curious as to why there not set up as standard.

Is it a case of the HyperYelp and HyperLo not meeting any certain standard?

Hypotheticals / Domestic Response
« on: October 08, 2010, 11:26:35 AM »
Howdy Guys,

This hypothetical is purely to tell us all who you as a brigade or at a group level respond to reported house fires and why. Not interested in reading about incident control and management or who you might respond in a perfect world... i want to know WHO ACTUALLY GETS RESPONDED AND WHY.

In our area there is always 2 brigades [in the hopes of a minimum of 2 appliances] to any structure call, fire or AFA. And a tanker will get added for areas with no reticulated water.

We all know CFS SOP says minimum of 2 inc 1 with BA, but this seems to vary greatly dependant on group and brigade and SOPs get ignored. What do you do locally?

Is it just me or is anyone else fed up with seeing single appliance responses to incidents? And im not talking about rubbish fires, tree downs, etc... Im talking about structure fires, alarm calls, vehicle fires and rescue not going to VAs.

Then when a brigade gets themselves turned out john wayne style, they more often than not end up hitting the more crew required button??

And before we all blame comms, lets remember 90% of CFS brigades get a phone call asking them who they want sent.

So why are we not following our own service SOPs, and common sense? Brigades doing this are only endangering the communities they clame to protect.

Country Fire Service / Apollo Gold Pagers.
« on: April 22, 2010, 06:19:33 PM »
Howdy All,

Myself and another member in my brigade have had replacement pagers issued recently, and ended up with the new BRIGHT YELLOW Apollo Gold pagers.

On face value, it seems to me the CFS has cheaped out [no suprise] as they are bigger, heavier and gayer looking than the old ones. My pager also seems to have less functions [ie; no choice of message tone] than the manual provided shows.

One problem already encountered is the volume of the alarm tone activated by CFSRES or URGMSG [which for those who havent heard it sounds a bit like a 'wail' siren]. It's extemely quiet, and this has resulted already in the other brigade member not attending the station for a call as even though it was on his belt, he didnt hear it activate.

A couple of things i will applaud though, you can choose from 'beep', 'vibrate' or 'BEEP & VIBRATE', which is good at least, the blue backlit screen is much better at night than the old motorolas effort, and the text is slightly bigger and easier to read.

Anyone else had any issues or have opinions on the new gear?

Cheers,
Alex

filtered hell boys, lets all get over it. there is an RCR directory that decides where everyone goes... this was signed off on by all services... now grow up, we cant all have all the gear and be into everything.

Eeeerrr... and isnt the latest that east torrens gets disolved and merged with other groups in the giant reshuffle anyway? Then you can all be friends, no little empires to protect.
