Hypotheticals / USAR
« on: August 06, 2007, 06:06:33 PM »
The horrible bridge collapse in the US made me wonder about a couple of things.

In Adelaide a structure has collapsed it is(was) a 3 story concrete building with  a car park underneath and it is known that people are trapped in the rubble.

now it is equal distance from CFS and MFS stations so it doesn't matter what service is responded.
Obviously the first crews to arrive will do what they can to protect extremities and any easily accessibly rescues whilst remaining safe. Now my main question is once the site had been deemed a recovery and not a rescue who job is it to recover any  casualties?

and Is there anything taught in USAR that should make me Tell my Crews NOT to move rubble etc. even if people are visible and screaming at them?

inspiration for this came from firehouse

You are at a 2 story house fire with thick smoke coming out of under the eaves of the first story and visible in the 2nd story windows. there is 1 2man BA team on the roof preparing to vent 2nd story windows and one BA team has entered the front door with a hose and been in for 10 minutes when their DSU starts making a racket.

you are part of a 2 man crew told to get them out.
there is no visible fire from outside the structure but LOTs of smoke?
sorry
What do you do? How do you go about getting them out etc

After reading a bit more it occurred to me most people hopefully would follow the hose in and usually find them so lets just say they aren't at the end of the hose.

Country Fire Service / Experiance on of OIC
« on: May 30, 2007, 09:17:11 PM »
In the CFS it is some times an issue where a FF with not much experience gets the task of running a job. I read this http://forums.firehouse.com/showthread.php?t=91011
On firehouse and thought it was a case of incredible American's wanting authority. But out of interest wondered if any of you guys and gals had had similar situations or what you would do if you can see that something is not going to work?

it was shown in a philosophy lecture at uni today.
it demonstrates how Palm readers and the like can actauly operate

however sometimes they don't realise they are doing this and believe that they really do have a 6th sense.

All Equipment discussion / Ideal CFS pumpers
« on: May 23, 2007, 10:32:23 PM »
Well Since everyone is so absorbed in CFS having a lack of good pumpers and just getting type 2 mediums so here is the question: without any budget constraints what would be the ideal CFS pumper?

So far from other threads i have picked up:
4000L
2 HP lines
mid mount pump
Lots of power so they can operate in hilly areas.

I'll try and edit this post to add new sugestions.

All Equipment discussion / K12s
« on: May 10, 2007, 09:03:58 PM »
K12 or chain saws with a disc don't seem to make an appearance in CFS.
http://www.stihl.com.au/Products/subcategory.cfm?isubCategoryID=14 Link to what i am talking about

now assuming you can fit them on your truck does any on have any opinions on these?
most people i have suggested them to just say "you don't have enough time" but i would have thought they would be very usful in getting into overly secure structures.

ALL Rescue / Costs
« on: April 28, 2007, 11:17:18 PM »
Can anyone please tell me what is the minmmum amount of rescue gear that is really required for a brigade to be an effective RCR resource and how much  this would approximately cost?
being in a non RCR brigade means much of this kind of knowledge is never discussed?

Country Fire Service / Trucks of the future
« on: March 24, 2007, 08:57:39 PM »
I'm just wondering what people would like to see the appliances that we get in the future be made to do.

Do we want trucks that are made to do every thing and end up not being good at any 1 specific thing?

or do we want brigades to be issued with a rural and an urban pumper where the entire truck is made more specialized?

Personally I think the new 34 and the Mils tui 24p like Mt Pleasant seem to be on the right track.

All Equipment discussion / 50mm hose
« on: March 18, 2007, 06:05:56 PM »
As MFS use 50mm as their main working hose and i believe it is on some CFS pumpers  does anyone think this type of hose  has any use in CFS standard stowage on 24/34 appliances?

Hypotheticals / Schools
« on: February 23, 2007, 02:56:58 PM »
This isn't really a hypothetical but I heard that Linden park had a light that managed to fill a room up with smoke that other day which resulted in 2 aerials and 6 pumps as well as 5 or 6 ambos. now my Brigade regularly responds to  primary school out hours which is a 2 brigade response. As this school is in CFS area would an alarm there in the middle of the day cause 6 CFS brigades to be responded? Even before the first appliance has arrived.

Country Fire Service / Should CFS be Paid For COQ?
« on: February 17, 2007, 06:33:23 PM »
I asked this in another topic but decided it should be made into it's own. Personally I think it is a good idea to pay CFS who are filling in for MFS. Eg I wouldn't like to be called into a station outside of my area at 2 am to sit around until the Red trucks come home.

All Equipment discussion / GRN radio
« on: February 15, 2007, 12:37:57 PM »
Recently I did the GRN course and on this they told us (i think I already knew any way) that no more of the same type of radio the the CFS uses are being produced hence many training ones are being used for spare parts.

Any way where are to radios that are being put in the new trucks coming from? are they just pulled from the older trucks or are they different radios altogether?

Country Fire Service / Needing more vollies
« on: January 28, 2007, 07:54:27 PM »
A few weeks back in The Advertiser there was an article on the front page about volunteers and employers getting to the point of being unable to spare any more time and as the fire season had already been very busy crewing in the later part would be difficult.

In short a few things where proposed such as
- making a shorter training course for people who only want to go out to bushfires that doesn't cover things like road crash and structure fires

I wish i had cut the article out

Any way I came up with an idea to toss around  take about 40 the reasonably good condition trucks that are about 16 years old out of service and store them in a large warehouses of about 1 or 2 strike teams each, these warehouses would be positioned through out the suburbs and crewed by city dwellers who  have done basic bushfire training. this would mean that 5 or 6 strike teams could be generated without removing fire cover from anywhere as they would be stored in the coverage of Mets or already established CFS brigades.

What do you guys think.

This is an interesting read

Country Fire Service / The role of IMT
« on: January 15, 2007, 01:20:59 PM »
I am not trying to complain about IMT but i do have a few questions.

for example
I wasn't there but it sounds like at mt bold there was an oversupply of trucks. is this because the IMT was worried or someone at SHQ heard smoke sighting at MT Bold near Kitpo so he or she sent the world?

Is it the IMT that chooses if they need more resources and where they come from?

And other than that when does a fire get assigned an IMT and is it mainly people from the group that the fire is in?

thanks

Hypotheticals / Myer
« on: December 14, 2006, 07:00:08 PM »
I am going out on a limb but there is a reason this is the hypothetical section

On the 23rd of December as 14:00 a fire is reported in the white goods department of the Myer store. initial reports are coming from fixed alarms and people on lower floors seeing smoke come across the void space in the center of the store.

For those who haven't spent the extreme amounts of time in Myers that I have the store has 6 floors including the ground floor and each floor 1-5 has a void space that enables  you so see all the way down to the ground floor. Other than that each floor is essentiall open level space.

For the sake of this hypothetical the fire has some form of accelerant and is burning quite intensely. Essentially I am asking how you fight a well involved fire in such an open indoor environment. Both with and WITHOUT sprinklers.

Hypotheticals / I really hope this doesn't happen.
« on: November 11, 2006, 08:09:14 PM »
8:30 in the down tunnle on the SE freeway a petrol tanker has lost its breaks hit the left wall of the tunnel and rlled so it is blocking the entire three lanes of traffic. Intitialy the tanker didnt rupture but a seccond semi with steel beems has collieded into the tank riling a very large hole into the tanker and setting it alight. the next cars to get to the tunnel avoided entering and stoped on the side of the freeway.

So essentaially there is a tanker on fire in the down tunnel. the condition of the two drivers is unknown.

Who should get responded and how do you puth the fire out?

In our brigade we only have rather old brass 38 & 64 branches. I was wondering what model and brand most other brigades use that are less thatn 2 or so years old.
