Maybe.....

There have been some issues, as I understand it between CFS, and Politicians, and the dates may not be as they have first appeared....

I wonder under what circumstances a politician is entitled to have a say on the commencement of the fire season?!

And yet here in my part of the Mt Lofty Ranges it is green, and just keeps raining - very difficult to get anything to burn...

On the West Coast & parts of the Riverland, they have a Soil dryness indicators equal to what you would see in the middle of a dry summer.....parts of Mt Lofty Ranges with SDI of what you would expect in a normal winter.

So some of these decisions re the dates don't appear to be based on the actual conditions in the area, but on other, perhaps non-evidence based things...?

From what I have been told recently, there is a Government Gazette Notice in this weeks Gazette, which gazettes the FDS in the Mt Lofty Ranges from 1st October!!   I'd better have a look at the Gazette and find out!

That sounds right :) and very well planned.

14 days + preorganisation determines the dates.

yes and we have people burning off before the FDS (trying to do the right thing) and someone driving in the area sees smoke and calls 000 and we end up with fire trucks and police descending on the landowner. CFS either have a look around and do nothing or else put it out, SAPOL take notes and speak to everyone in sight then we all depart. Is the poor landowner going to burn off again? they might think twice about it if they are of an at all nervous disposition and say buggerit too much hassle! Is this a good thing? Not in my opinion. I wish all the smoke sighting reporters would investigate first if we are not inside the FDS.

Perhaps we need an education campaign (it certainly won't be this season, but perhaps next one) about burn offs outside the FDS....perhaps to encourage people to have a look at what is going on, before dialling 000..

Like many others, were were called to a "grass fire" - as soon as I read the message, I knew who was burning off, and what he was burning off, and that it would not be a problem ...

We responded, and there was the landowner, burning a large pile of rubbish, all dressed up in the appropriate clothing for burning off, with his tractor along side, with the pump & water tank on the back..and he was clearly visible from all directions - pity the  passerby didn't take the time to look...!!

Oh well...it gives the brigade a bit of practice at responding. and perhaps prods the community a bit (the siren is set off for all rural fires in our area) - and hopefully makes them think a it about their own properties & preparing them for the summer!!

Yes, similar to the "think first, then dial" campaign SAPOL did...  Look first, then dial...

I agree in one way Pip but if you give the public to much to do in regards to phone things in they will not ring in when needed just in case there was something they did not see.
We get responded a lot out of FDS as the land owner does not look after the burnoff, they just light up and off they go other important stuff to do as they say its only a small fire what harm can it do. Thats where the education is needed as you first stated.

would be nice if people had a good look/investigated before dialing triple zero..
however persons burninng off should be advising the fire service they will be burning off anyway... i know this is a legality when using a permit during FDS, not sure about outside FDS.... pip?

if more people advised the fire service they would be burniung off then perhaps some (realising we (& adelaide fire) have a duty to respond appliances if any doubt) responses could be avoided...
Title: Re: 07/08 Fire Danger Season Dates

I don't think there is a requirement under the Act to advise anyone of a burnoff outside the FDS...but many people to notify when a permit is issued during FDS (although I suspect most people don't advise all of the agencies they are meant to, under a permit...)

As mentioned, there is a danger in people NOT reporting things, that perhaps they should...so any education campaign needs to be carefully managed, so that not every fire is ignored outside the FDS.....!

well our group notifies of FDS permits doesn't it Pip  and by the end of November you are sick of getting 2 pagers a day to say there are comfort fires happening.
