SAAS / New call signs
« on: July 09, 2012, 01:57:42 PM »
Noticed some new call signs on the pagers today...

GX108
GXA108
GX77
GX127
EW77

The GX crews were tagged with pagers from Salisbury and Prospect, and EW from Marion.

Taking a stab in the dark, GX to me would be Gepps Cross (is there a new PTS/ESS station there)?? but EW the only 2 things that make sense to me is East West (sort of like the FP car, regional not station based) or Edwardstown.

Anyone got any idea??

RESPOND RESCUE ANIMAL, CROSS RD/FULLARTON RD NETHERBY,MAP:ADL 131 A12,TG 182, == KOALA IN A TREE :STM401 :

Huh??? Whats next...Rescue fish from pond.......bird from aviary???

Really...this is not an emergency services call. The koala is either in the trees in the Monastery (behind the cement trees) or at the Servo given the location given.

Call in RSPCA, DENR or a wildlife rescue team...but a MFS appliance for this is ridiculous.

SA Firefighter General / Stirling / Piccadilly Amalgamation
« on: June 04, 2012, 12:47:35 PM »
Oh I see.

When it suits Stirling, they sook to the media about how being forced to relocate to another location will "add valuable minutes to a response time".

But, as it suits them now, offer to merge Picadilly into them, so the residents of Picadilly then get a reduced response time.

Hmmm......

Cheers D6.....confirms my suspicions :)

Being a northern suburbs kid, really is concerning me the lack of crews out here 5 crews to cover from Elizabeth through to the Barossa.......and I noticed on the weekend a sick crew on PF71, meaning an overtime crew from Renmark was working the area at one stage  :?

No, there is a new call sign that is coming up with SAAS, being E1, E2, E3 and E4 (in fact I think I have seen an E6)

These appear to be different to Sprint, ECP's and TL's.

I am wondering if they might be Paramedic first responders, sort of a "down graded" Sprint.

Just wondering if anyone can shed any light onto what these resources are.

Obviously some sort of first responder. Where are they based, hours of operation, primary role etc??

No just sick of uneducated, jump to conclusions vollies who think they know better, when they only see a little part of the overall picture.

I dont know it all, far far far far from it, but I have taken the time to actually go and see how large incidents operate at a Regional level, and gained some very different perspectives on things, including some critical decision making that may appear to make no sense locally, but when you have ALL the information, makes perfect sense.

No, I'm not a staff member. I am a vollie.

So...a vehicle breaks down at a critical moment......you really think that falls into the "stuff up" category and not "one of those things" categories.

Well we better start counting the amount of times we actually "stuff up" then....it will be a lot more, and a lot more public.

I agree DENR have a high fail rate, but this really should not be put in the fail category. It was just one of those unfortunate things, were a few factors went against the situation at the same, wrong time.

Trucks dont belong to a brigade, they belong to the CFS. If a Regional Commander or Officer, armed with a lot more information and expertise than a Captain makes the decision to second an appliance, they have every right to.

Me thinks the Greenhill captain needs to get over themselves.

Actually it was not a "stuffed up" burn off. The actual story is that the burn off did spot ahead. There were 2 QAV's and a Fireking there. When the spot happened, the Fireking broke down, and the QAV's couldnt get to the spot, and then it just got away.

There was also minimal wind at the location of the burn, which is why it went ahead.

Lol i deserved that!

What i'm asking is why said appliance needed to be taken to gumeracha for testing of a pump. There is no mechanic or testing facilities, etc. in gumeracha, so why there? Its a 25km drive well outside of the brigades area, let alone group. There is an identical appliance in gum station so if it wasnt the pump on the appliance itself that needed testing but something requiring a pump, i.e. some sort of installation, then why use an appliance from so far away????

Oh, well, I cant answer THAT!

18-04-12 13:59:56    BAL 14 WILL BE AT GUMERACHA FOR NEXT FEW HOURS, PUMP TESTING. LT1 - CFS Oakbank/Balhannah Info

Can anyone shed any light on this???

A 4 WD appliance that hold approx 1000 litres of water, that is housed at the Balhannah station was going to the township or locality of Gumeracha for a period of time of more than 1 hour but less than 24, for the purposes of testing the pump on the sid appliance. This message was sent by the Lieutenant 1 of the brigade.

Hope that helps  :-D

Why not just have the SAFS? Run all the fire services under one roof and that way everything is more consistent and streamlined?

A SAAS volunteer has the same uniform, callsign, qualification (in some cases), ambulance and equipment as the paid staff. They get sent into paid station areas and vice versa. It doesn't seem that hard?

3 reasons it would never happen.

Oh totally agree, and I think I misinterpreted your comments.

Having just come back from Tasmania, I must say how suprised I was at the prolific presence of alternative providers, with red and blues, even with things like "first response" and "rapid intervention" on them. Yet also seemed to be TAS Ambulance sprint / TL type vehicles in abundance as well.

I would like to challenge Numpty's insinuation (and apologies if I have mis-ead it) that only a SAAS (or equivalent) paid crew is a "professional" crew.

Professionalism isnt judged by a pay packet. It is judged by an attitude, by a skill level and by a general holistic way of looking at things.

I would love to see a 2nd year student paramedic rock up to a job, with someone akin to Dr Bill Griggs wearing at St John volly uniform, and the paramedic student telling the Dr Griggs type person that they were a professional and to move out of the way.

Get sick and tired of the attitude of "if I get paid, I am a professional". Met plenty of paid emergency service workers who are anything but that not just medically based).

But yet 3 minutes after this Southern Flerieau put out a message saying the Deep Creek burn had been cancelled.

Any reason it took so long to figure out how to fight it ?

I'm gonna hazard a guess and say lack of previous experience in fighting an oil fire like that, along with associated risks preventing an effective direct attack.

I had nothing to do with the operation, but would say more of the latter, and a bit of the former.
