SASES / SES week - Rundle Mall display 9 Nov08
« on: November 09, 2008, 05:25:10 PM »
Hi all,   some photos from the Rundle Mall display put on for the start of SES week.  The display centred on Confined space demonstrations and Rescue from heights. The Vertical component was run from the roof top of David Jones store about 9 stories up.

how much money do you think companys like telstra going to lose for no offering the service.
 :-D :-D :?

I do not think Telstra will ever offer it to the "Mum & dad" users as they would loose all the STD fees they collect.  I can ring anywhere in Aust for as long as I like for one small fee.  I also talk to other nodephone users at no cost and some times this adds up to hours when helping with computer training on line.

There are a lot of VOIP suppliers all with different costs and some much better than others

I have been working with a number of versions of VOIP over the years and it is still evolving for general use but its getting easier and more reliable all the time.

how many people use it, and what do you think?

I use Internode's Nodephone all the time from home. All the house extensions run via the modem for outgoing calls and only use the POTS line (telstra) for 13 and 1800 numbers via the modem dial plan and for non VOIP incoming calls on the Telstra home budget plan all looped through the modem.

Never have any problems with VOIP outgoing as the whole system runs on a UPS for mains backup for the first hour.

Hypotheticals / Re: Adelaide airport

cool thanks I alway assumed that it would involve everone and if anyone does know of the response plans in adelaide i would like to have a look .

The response plans are not for public access they and the regular meeting minutes are restricted documents as the information they contain could become security risks if used the wrong way.  Sorry they are not accessible in the public library system !

There is a Taxi Rank, at the airport , dont forget about the buses to the city that do happen to go near the RAH.

Yes I have been involved in a number of mass casualty exercises at Adelaide Airport and buses are always used for the "walking wounded" after triaging at the scene with normally a dozen ambulances for stretcher cases and SAPOL for overall command.  They normally hold a full practical exercise every second year and a "desktop" on the in-between year.  Same as Parafield AP in a smaller scale (normally 5 to 10 casualties size).

cheers.

pardon my ignorance toward land search jobs etc... but given the initial call was just before 3, Norwood patrols had a forward command established on scene shortly after 3, STAR Group & helicopter around 4pm....

Is it really necessary for an SES unit to respond under lights and sirens to this job after 8pm?

Good question in hindsight,  but as each SES unit was contacted individually to responded they may not know the history of the event and maybe have been told to respond P1 or P2 with no other details except location to report to. also first crews rolled about 1630 hours.

Hi All,  I have produced a new compilation video from the Adelaide TV News.

The TV footage covering "080304 Morialta search 04 Mar08" from Tuesday night's
news.   Both SES and CFS members attended.
The video is a 21.3 MB file in Divx (mpeg4) format and runs about 4:53
minutes.  The Web download location for the file is ftp://video:[email protected] and pick the file to FTP.

It is also available for viewing on YouTube at
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=eniEpzthCNg

Over the 4 news feeds it looks like both SES and CFS received about equal coverage but some reporters still do not know who is who with their voice overs. !

Cheers
Arno.

SASES / Re: Edinburgh SES ??

haven't heard any name changes they might just be testing to see what it sounds like but i cant see why the name change if they did it would have to be "Edinburgh park" as that is there location.

Yep they changed mid January, an email was sent to all metro Units, extract below

Quote
Just advising you that as of the 17th of this month it was decided by the unit that the name of the unit will be changed from Northern Districts to Edinburgh S.E.S.

Also if possible can you send the message out to all units informing them of the name change as well as informing MFS so that when we communicate to them they know who they are talking to and which areas that we will respond to when the jobs come in....

Thanx for all your help...

SA Firefighter General / Re: Helmet Camera

hold on I know sufers who take pictures and footage of them surfing and downhill mountain bikeriders who tape caeras on their helmets because they like doing their hobbie/sport. so how is us taking footage/pics of jobs a bad thing?

and chook do you want all the pics to be staged shots with clean ppe compleatyly missing the more private side of us?

No problems with people taking pictures of them self doing fun things,  but taking pictures of OTHER people in situations where they may not want to be photographed, is an other story.   Any recognisable close up of the public you must have their names and permission before it can be distributed, even for training purposes of new members.

I take hundreds of photos of SES involvements and training BUT each photo is examined closely for PPE and other possible picture problems before they are released for general distribution and as training aids.  This is very hard to do with fast moving video but each video frame can be taken out of context and used as a photo to be published.  Remember electronic photos and video can be distributed widely in a very short time.

i'm sure most of the footage you get will be edited ut as it might be only 10 min worth watching after a house fire?

Just remember, any person with a camera could be treated as a Media representative and can be excluded or restricted at any incident as the IC sees fit.    How tempting is it to get close up footage of media restricted areas and then be offered a payment to supply it to a media organisation.   Personally the cameraman is treated as a freelance operator and can have the camera and himself removed especially if the fire or VA becomes a crime scene.

Just because the camera is small and less obvious it still produces the same "News" footage results for the media.

SASES / Re: New Radio Callsigns
« on: October 09, 2007, 04:49:16 PM »
Hi All,

The "new" numbering does not help with vehicle usage details really.   One unit can have two trucks now to be called 31 and 32,  The first one is biased to storm and flood damage ie pumps, long ladders, multiple chain saws, roofing repair kits and material etc.    The other is biased to structural damage ie  acro props, nail guns, wood saws, lighting banks and structural timber etc.

From the radio call sign there is no way of knowing what a general rescue truck is carrying with out knowing what your neighbouring units are set up with.    We know our adjacent units because we visit them and they visit us so when extra help is needed we get the correct assistance.  We have known their "old" numbers for 20 years and have had no problems in the past.

The same problems will appear with 4x4 vehicles you have Landcruisers and Hilux 4x4 utes both coded as four wheel drives with totally difference capabilities and roles in the field.

How about less abbreviations lol...im beginning to agree with a Victoria counterpart that we use too many abbreviations.

I agree but mostly full names are too long for pager messages and a serial number is totally useless without a look up sheet.  At least abbreviations normally have some link to the full name.

The other issue is that some of the old SES Unit names are proposed to change to reflect where the Unit exists, rather than older council names. Not sure how some of the metropolitan names will shorten to 3 alpha for paging yet.

The Identifier will use the standard 3 letter address group that has been used for message ID's for some 30+years with some minor updates like Sturt was HVY  and now will be STT.
