Country Fire Service / Re: Training frequency
« on: March 04, 2009, 08:04:06 AM »
There is certainly a requirement for training on a 'regular' basis. Not only legislatively, but for our own safety and piece of mind.

My brigade trains weekly, however we generally have a month in winter and a few weeks over xmas off - everyone needs a break. The surronding brigades change thier training schedule based on the time of year.
- once a month
- once a fortnight
- weekly
It results in a number of pager messages to remind people, but a small price to pay.

The result is that as a group there is a requirement to train 12 times a year which can be met easily, and there is flexabiliy for those who work on the land.

It certainly appears to be quite functional, however ill reserve my opinion for when i actually see it stowed.

Typically people are poorly prepared or miss their deadlines/appointments.

Make sure you have everything you need, utilise the MFS website for example questions and explanations of the Physical aspects... but MOST of all treat it like any other job interview.

Its something I discussed with the boss when I first started, and bring up at reviews to ensure it hasnt been causing any problems. However, like Pip I need to consider what staffing levels are like and who will cover for me.

Best to be proactive in these things.

ALL Rescue / Re: Dash Roll with B pillar removed.
« on: February 02, 2009, 08:55:03 AM »
They stopped teaching the use of chains shortly after adjustable steering columns came into vogue. To much pressure on the joint causes the column to break and travel in an arc resulting in some pretty serious injuries.

Dash Roll/Lift are prefered options to opening up that space.

I know SES aim to teach new methods, and depending on time/cars/trainee's will incorporate old skills where appropriate.

Interestingly enough, *rumour* has it that the new SES radios will have the ability to link to FIRE talkgroups, but CFS wont be able to link to SES...

Rant rating 3/10 .  No filtered swearing, no real pouting  and no foot stomping, much too learn glasshopper! :-D

Online ranting is a skill to be aquired, and i do have to set at least a slightly example ;) Face to face ranting is much more fun!

95
We dont all do it actually... Im sure you like everyone else misterteddy has spat the dummy over network busies, however its that attitude that compounds the problem.

They will (& do) check talkgroup usage at large incidents if network busies are prominent... and i certainly dont want to be on the recieving end of a serve from my GO when he questions us about misuse of talkgroups. If the incident concerns you that much, ring your base and ask.

*end rant* :) ;)

SA Firefighter General / Re: Recruiting the younger generation.
« on: December 22, 2008, 07:17:56 PM »
Mental age is paramount....

The question was raised about people leaving after a short time and it potentially being a waste of training.

I read a study a while ago indicating that most people who participated in emergency services in their twenties and left to start families etc. were much much more likely to re-join a service in their late thirties. Thus the long term benifit of training being much greater.

if they are ready, willing and capable then i dont care how old they are!!!!

SASES / Re: Domestic and Industrial Rescue

Numbers....the answer (I think) is that nobody is, certainly CFS and MFS arent. Like kitten rescues from a wall cavity, we teach people how to use tools, and then we respond with some measure of hope when we get a scenario that doesnt fit nicely into the "normal" range of incidents. This is one of the reasons that working to rules (instead of guidelines) doesn't work.

As far as im aware it is likewise for the ses, however some units do have small movement equipment (the old enerpak gear).

Your general assumption would be right on the money numbers.
