Country Fire Service / Re: Who is looking after our media section
« on: July 28, 2011, 07:49:48 PM »
There was a recent two page spread in the 'Tiser (Wednesday I think) promoting the life and role of a "Firefighter". All about the training and dedication to communtiy etc etc etc. In one corner of the article was a small mention of CFS and how they are used in country areas to help fight bushfires - in towns and communities that "Couldn't afford to have a full time fire service"

Absolutely appalled and discussed by the article and those that put it together should hide their heads in shame.

This has been a problem for years in the media. For some reason they continue to dispell the CFS as a genuine Emergency Service.  I thought the new Chief was intended on turning this around.  That article hasn't helped the cause one little bit.

Country Fire Service / Re: New CFS pumpers
« on: September 16, 2009, 05:42:58 PM »
I think it sounds very sensible.  Pumper really only requires a small quantity of water on board to act as a buffer until a hydrant is sunk and whilst relaying.

Doesn't matter how much water you have on board, if there is no reticulated supply you aint gonna pump nufin, well not for very long anyway.

Look at the filtered that broke loose at Kilburn due to lack of water.  All those $400K trucks with all the gear and 1800 litres of water would have only lasted a few seconds longer than a Canter with a 2 stage pump, 4in-4out plumbing, 10 lengths of 64, 1000 litres of water and a crew of 5 on board.  Probably get two (or more?) pumpers for the price of one red truck!

We all know in CFS, it's about value for money.  Sounds like a great way of getting effective resources to where they are needed without a 'CFA' budget.

SASES / Re: Search at Paney Station 8th Sept
« on: September 08, 2009, 09:16:40 PM »
From the AdelaideNow website....

"A KANGAROO surveyor has been found safe and well in the rugged Gawler Ranges after going missing for a day.

The Murray Bridge man, in his 60s, was last heard from about noon yesterday via his UHF radio.

He was part of a survey to determine the number of kangaroos in the Gawler Ranges National Park, about 200km west of Port Augusta.

STAR Group police joined in the search with Department of Environment and Heritage staff.

State Emergency Service volunteers also were called in to help in the search, with two spotters in aircraft.

A forward command post was set up at the Paney Station homestead."

My 2c as well, actually more like 10c

No doubt the officers charge has opened a can of worms within Sapol - it certainly got the tongues wagging here.  I have not closely observed the circumstances of this case, however have spoken regularly with a close relative who is regularly in this situation.

Most of us aren't Cops, and haven't had the approriate Urgent Duty Driving training, so is hard to present an impartial argument.  My take is that as an officer he has to make a judgment call every time he decides to persue.

He has to measure up the risk that the speeding bike presents against the risk that two speeding vehicles creates.  Does the level of offence warrant the chase.  Would it be better to simply get close enough to take down a rego number and follow it up later.  Overtaking a bus in a speed restriction zone - well that puts him in a very precarious position.  To choose to chase in that situation was very brave (and foolish, you may suggest in hind sight).

I think he may have paid the ultimate penalty for making the wrong choice under probably quite strong pressure.  To have UDD licence is not a licence to just go for it any time you think the need is there.

As far as firies speeding through speed zones.  Well, the same thing applies - Are you going to place the safety of anybody at risk to attend burnt toast alarms, or even a going fire.  The time delay created by slowing down at a school zone or roadworks is not going to make any difference at the pointy end.  Weigh up the risks against what you realistically expect to achieve.  You would never ever forgive yourself if you caused injury (or worse) to a roadworker or child in your haste to get to a grassy that burnt 10 acres of grass and a few fence posts. The legal ramifications is another matter altogether - the rules are only there to keep everybody safe, duty of care etc etc.

SAMFS / Re: Reflectors on wheels
« on: December 05, 2008, 11:58:39 AM »
Not sure about within MFS, but there was a fatal at Athlestone where a wheel came off a truck (cement/tipper?) and collected a pedestrian.  Loose/missing wheel nuts was the cause, allegedly.  Just highlighted a need to take active measures to avoid the same thing happening again.

OFF Topic / Re: "Scorched"
« on: September 02, 2008, 01:25:01 PM »
Probably just "Yankafied", to appeal to the overseas markets.  Something like NSWRFS just wouldn't mean anything to foreigners.

Similar to the movie The Castle (IIRC), had to remove references to Torana's, Camira's, Valiants etc in the US release, as the Yank's wouldn't understand it.

Another possibility, maybe the producers were attempting to suggest that a "future" could realise a combined national rural firefighting service.

and those lucky 7 aren't likely to give them up after only a few years, unless being replaced with something pretty awesome.  Something akin to a Burnside Volvo.

Just curious, what constitutes a 2nd alarm RCR??  Not one that I have seen before.  I imagine that first crews possibly required assistance.  I beleive this was a two car MVA with at least one fatality (SES were later responded for tarping).  Don't know how many appliances responded to the 1st alarm.

Sounds like a nasty one.

I travel westbound through that intersection almost every day.  Now, I am NOT suggesting that the road is to blame for the two fatals into that tree - purely driver error, but you only have to be doing 60kph heading east to get very light on your wheels, if not some good air time.  IMHO I feel that some realignment could reduce the severity of the hump, but I'm no road designer.

It only takes a little speed and not much more stupidity to risk a close encounter with that tree.  At least they could instal some armco barrier on the south side of Pimpala Rd.

It would be interesting to see some speed camera shots of west bound traffic there - would be like an episode of The Dukes of Hazzard!
