On a related matter - I know of a group who have issued personal audio recorders to the group officers. Can record hundreds of hours of audio and easy to back up.

The recorder is worn around the neck on a lanyard. Could be a good tool for people in high level incident management to use for report writing or to prompt their memory of situations later.....Like court. :-o

Country Fire Service / Re: Response of Bombers
« on: December 19, 2007, 08:56:38 PM »
I remember a job where I took the Fire Phone call and looked out my back window when the caller said where it was.
Upgraded to Second Alarm before hanging up - large smoke plume and growing.

Bolted to the station took the 34 and crew. On arrival first bomber was overhead did first drop and knocked the stuffing out of the head. Gave us a great head start and allowed us to begin chasing down the remaining flanks.

If I arrived and called for bombers the job could have been much much larger.......

Auto Dispatch is great!

Consider an area like the Barossa, hefty investment in huge infrastructure. Multi Storey buildings and extreme risk.

The nearest sky jet is at Oakden probably a solid forty minute drive to Nuri even with the assistance of green lights all the way. Surely a brigade like Tanunda, Nuri, Lyndoch should have appliances proportionate to the risk covered.

The risk should determine the appliances in stations not if the service providers are paid a wage or not. 8-)

I tend to agree.....

I always have believed that it is better to value what time can be given rather than ridicule people for not giving what you may expect.

By actively thanking people for what they can give I have found they in turn want to give more. It takes time but you can turn the tide..... :-)

Licensing isn't an issue the company that owned Airsource went broke and no longer exists.....

I thought Airsource was everywhere already. I know of brigades that have officers using it from home for admin and info paging.

But you are right that the CRD centre should not be receiving phone calls to request the sending of a low priority pager message.

SAMFS / Re: MFS pre-election leaflet distribution
« on: December 03, 2007, 04:37:25 PM »
What do you think about off duty protesting in uniform as part of their Union?

Union endorsed action that is legal and fighting for workplace conditions is very different to actively involving yourself in election campaigning. IMO.

Career fire fighters, police, ambos etc should have the right to wear uniform during industrial issues. The difference I see in this case is that the public can see that the workers are fighting for pay and conditions. And actively attempting to engage the organisation they work for.

Election campaigning sends the signal that the whole organisation supports xyz political party and that could become a powerful influence.

My Opinion for what it's worth....................... 8-)

But surely govt employees can't be involved in political promotions while on duty.

What would we say if employees were standing on street corners promoting other causes or religion etc etc we would not stand for it. So why is politics ok?

I say govt employees state or federal should do their jobs while on duty and do whatever they choose to do while not on duty.

I love getting paid to attend fire calls. Why the filtered would you do it for free. :? :? :?

What's the point of the post. Asking a genuine question is fine. But if you are trolling for a flame war here is not the place! And I suspect that is what you are hoping for.

Thread will be locked/deleted if required.

SA Firefighter General / Re: GRN RADIO;S
« on: October 20, 2007, 08:34:54 AM »
In my view there are two issues, First the infrastructure is limited by the number of available frequencies on a tower.

And secondly the users who need good radio discipline to use the available resources appropriately.

Many users don't understand that they can tie up network resources by monitoring talk groups using GRN handhelds for example.

I know it is common practice for some officers to monitor neighbouring groups or even distant groups jobs, under the guise of "we might get called so need to know what's going on"

If a towers has 8 frequencies and you have CFS, SES, SAAS, SAPOL, Parks, etc, etc, all using several talk groups you can consume eight frequencies very quickly. Now add to the mix someone monitoring other traffic and no wonder there is congestion.

SASES / Re: New Radio Callsigns
« on: October 10, 2007, 02:53:06 PM »
SES don't' use the word rescue how firies do..When we say rescue we normally refer to a RCR hydraulic rescue capability, SES units have divisions with in the unit and one of them is Rescue, so if a vehicle is designated rescue it does not mean it is RCR or hyrdraulic rescue capable simply that is designated to the rescue team/division. That vehicle could be set up for storm damage or rope rescue or flooding etc etc.....

Other divisions if my memory serves are: Communications, Logistics, Recon......Could be others maybe SES people can give more insight. And things could have changed.....

Very different paradigms and unless you spend time with an SES unit can be difficult to get your head around if you come from a fire perspective.

ALL Rescue / Re: RCR Ages
« on: October 06, 2007, 09:48:36 AM »
Have a chat to the safecom SPAM team about ages - they will give you a very different view. Age is very important. A young person all though mature and competent is unlikely to have developed the coping mechanisms to deal with significant trauma or death.

I have been part of SPAM briefings where it was strongly suggested people under 20 should be used with caution in the interests of their health and longevity in the services. Now that wont be practical in a lot of cases but it is certainly a different perspective and one that has been long-standing in CFS spam circles (as I understand it).

The concept that people should be exposed to RCR trauma to prepare them is archaic and very odd. If people can avoid the exposure it is far better. Exposure to trauma and death can have a cumulative effect on people. So if we pre-emptively expose young people we aren't helping them prepare we are potentially reducing there long term capacity for this type of work.

IMO

They (whoever they is) probably did consider it - I would suggest that BIC have a bad reputation, people that have never even held one will say with authority that they are no good.

Bizarre!!!!!!

This will not be allowed to degrade into an argument.....If you have constructive feedback/criticism that is welcome here, it might wake someone up. But this site is not for mudslinging etc. etc.....

In my view the time for action on these matters is while you are a member. You have shared your views loud and clear by leaving the unit.

Why not move on and enjoy your time or find another organisation that suits you.

Sorry but that is speculation. Aviation fire services use them in SA.

They need a little bit of care but that's it, like anything if you care for it it works as intended.

What has prompted the standardisation? Is there any legislation or is it merely a recommendation?
