What I should have said was that the police force hated training police officer and having them go to the MFS.
They had a gentleman's agreement to make it harder for cops to get in. This was a long time age. I was all down to the money it costed to train up police  officers

Years ago going from cop to firefighter was  very hard. Now it is normal.

Not being a party pooper, but getting all measured up and being told you are first reserve sucks.

With being on the waiting list anything is possible.
From missing out and applying again to getting called up 8 months later and being told to come in for the Pat 2.
So stay fit just in-case.

This has been going on for years, If you can't make it the next person in your brigade gets a kick.
Ring up the day before saying i can't  make it but another member can. This is easy, they don't have to ring around others to fill a spot. Some brigades just nominate anyone and then the put others on the course.
Is this correct thing to do? Not sure, but the spot is filled.

This was also on channel 10 news. It was an absolute disgrace the firefighters in the back ground with dirty uniforms on. Looked like they had not washed them from last fire season and had been just shoved in a box somewhere

I think as long as you get most of the maths questions correct, it all comes down to the Psyc test.
It was explained to me as you need to fit in (bell curve) a certain rang for the test. I have no idea what the range is. I have passed the test a while ago. I never finished all of the maths and for the word association. Well the last few questions was a guess. Quick fill in anything.

A few years back the MFS had a test which was very hard. The problem was the people selected where not the best in the end for the job. They changed the test the next year. :-)
So as Ferret said it's about the type of thinker"

Hi Guys,
Just after your thoughts.  TFS are starting to do a similar thing, as part of their drill they are taking firelighters, fuel cans, chainsaws etc off the truck and placing them away from the truck.  If possible the truck is to be placed so that the front of the truck is facing towards where the fire is coming from.  I'm not saying I agree or disagree with either just curious about every ones thoughts, the TFS boys are divided on it. But if these are good ideas it could help improve the CFS drill

you mean the front of the truck.....the part with the glass and rubber and plastic in it....where the people are kept?.....as opposed to the back of the truck, where the bits of crap that can be replaced live, the back....thats as far away from the front, where the people are kept? If we get down to worrying about the 1L of 1:25 mix in the chainsaw.....shits are really trumps. Spend the time more usefully fighting for a piece of the single crew protection blanket the CFS kindly provides that magically isnt affected by the division between front and back seats. Maybe the Tas boys should try thinking with the other head....they seem to have too tight a grip on the current one
You mean stick your head between your legs and kiss your a_ss goodbye.
I thought it was a magic blanket

Hypotheticals / Re: Structure Fire Entanglement Hazard

A knife, that will not help too much.
Now if you had a Leatherman will Pliers, it might help some more.

Depends how good a knife it is mate. Most decent blades will go through light gauge wire easily.

A leatherman would definitely be a better option, but im not as trusting a person as i once was after both a shove knife and pocket knife dissapeared from my gear a couple of years ago. So i wont be leaving $100+ personally owned tools at the station anymore.
That's BS if someone has stolen it. But my life is worth more than 100 Bucks. I would like to see you cut through wire with a knife.

yeah have to wonder what state the BA system within the CFS is like when a brigade captain is told by supposed people in the know (dont know who they are) that a backup crew isnt required when going into a building that theres nothing wrong with a team going in alone without backup there or on the way  :|

The PP test has 8- 10 key questions, the rest is about Personality eg. team player, leader etc. There is a few questions that are related to political correctness.
All these test are like this.
With questions like this
Your desk, workbench etc. is usually neat and orderly   Y or N
I would like to write a famous play or Read a book
Strange questions and a heap of them.
Word Association Test
Dog is to    bird cat house fence     (cat is the answer)
This test gets harder, but don't worry about the last few questions, they are filtered hard. Just marks something.

Hey I could be wrong about this years test, but most tests are very similar.
Unless the MFS have changed what they want tested, which might be possible.

Normally about 8-10 Key questions in the Personality Profiling you must get correct. They have a heap of questions, but if you get one of the key questions wrong you will fail. Just answer the questions straight away for this section, don't try and think too much about the questions.
With the quick maths, story and word association I am not sure how you study for that.

Most, only the people how stuff up the application miss out.
I think over the last few intakes about 50 stuff up the application or don't have the correct paperwork.

Emergency Vehicles / Re: New Rescue van for CFS
« on: March 18, 2011, 05:08:43 PM »
So the SOP say.
1xRescue
1xTANKER (for fire cover)

But in the real world where the CFS is short of crews and drivers. A CFS rescue van is a waste of time. How many brigades default? So a rescue appliance needs a pump(fire). It just make basic sense and could help save lives. How many times do rescue brigades respond with only 4 or 5 and 1 driver?
Yes other resources are responded often with delay.

Check the CFS pager site and listen to the scanner over the next few weeks. To see how many times crews default or have a slow response.

Had a quick read (due to the lack of pages) of the latest Volunteer mag.
I love the bottom of page 15 - Xmas Shopping? Think Olympus Camera.
Donations
to the CFS for every camera purchased between 1 Oct 2010 and 31 Jan 2011.
And on page 28 a small article about the Clare Auto Shop Fire. Big job and lots of photos around , but a super small article with a small photo.

Also the Group Officers should manage what appliances are where. If they get another call, they can call up comms and ask for more appliances.
