Country Fire Service / Re: What does the VFBA do ? Debate
« on: September 26, 2006, 10:51:48 PM »
Guys, do you have to take every single topic and turn it into your own little dribble session, no offence but this is getting ridiculous. I cant see much future for this forum if the same three or four people are going to hijack every topic.

It's kind of like the annoying guy at a party that has to be involved in every conversation, you try and ignore him but he just won't go away.

I would have thought the fact they mis-spelled 'Euan' would have been a good indication it was a hoax. Ah well you guys took the bait hook line and sinker.

The should have responded some real tankers, i.e. Mt Lofty or Mawson. At least the Mawson Scania wouldn't have looked out of place around the other Scanias.

I think the saying goes 'don't bite the hand that feeds you'.

When you receive a substantial part of your funding each year from the CFS there is not really much incentive to start pushing issues that might cause problems for the service.

What is the solution ?? Obviously membership fees is one, fundraising for the VFBA is another. I don't see too many people wanting to do either of these though.

Maybe we need an independent body looking after our interests.

On another note, I see their website is now updated with a members only section.

The issue of Oxygen Therapy gear on appliances has now gone to the Strategic Leadership Group for discussion.

Whatever they say will be the go for the state, it's no longer in the hands of one Regional Commander.

Stay tuned.

SA Firefighter General / Re: FIRE"S IN VICTORIA
« on: September 20, 2006, 12:04:19 PM »
Latest Update from the DSE, certainly sounds interesting.

Statewide Update - 20 September 2006 11.00am
In Victoria fires on public land are shown on the statewide map.
Wednesday 20th Sept 11am
There are a number of fires burning on public land across Victoria.

The Southern Sunset fire (formerly referred to as the Berrook East fire), in the Murray Sunset National Park, is currently estimated at 17,500 hectares. The fire has not affected private land and remains contained within the park.Visibility in the area is poor due to smoke.
DSE resources are concentrated on the public / private boundary and will work with the CFA to protect any private land.
Residents and visitors are asked to stay away from the area, particularly around the Sunset Track and Underbool Track in the Murray-Sunset National Park.

There are two fires in the Otways. A fire at Delaneys Rd, near Barwon Downs has been declared controlled at 7am .A second fire at McCalls Rd near Yodene is under control.DSE and CFA are jointly patrolling this fire.

Near Healesville a fire at Myers Creek Rd is contained.
A one-hectare fire near Mansfield is under control.

If you don't like this forum then you can go to the new VFBA members only section and use the forums there.

To login you need to use your full name (inlcuding middle names) and your member ID number. If you don't know your number it looks like it can be emailed to you.

Once logged in I could only find the forums in the 'Site Map' link at the bottom of the page.

Country Fire Service / Re: Appliance Response Protocols

Thankfully that has changed and the CFS policy is that a minimum of 4 persons are required for turnout in a minimum 2.2 appliance, and at least 2 BA operators when responding to an EMA job,

Interesting you should mention about the two BA operators for any jobs into MFS area, I wonder why that did not apply to a fringe hills brigade the other day responding in their 14 to a Private Alarm in MFS area. If our brigade tried that we'd be shot.

Other Government Agencies / Re: A piece of history...
« on: April 06, 2006, 05:05:21 PM »
It was interesting listening to the MFS last night, they seemed to be going to a lot more 'tree down' jobs than you would expect for a night like that. A cynic would suggest that they were responding to jobs themselves coming in on the 132500 number. It was also interesting to see them respond two SES units and two MFS pumps to a tree down on a house at Largs North, I can't remember the last time two mets pumps went to a tree on a house as an initial response.

I guess this all ties in with the fact that they are now putting chainsaws on all their pumpers.

For CFS brigades in dual response areas (EMA) I think more tree downs could be on the way, I guess at least when MFS are tied up cutting up trees all night we will then get a run to some of the other jobs in their areas.

Andrew, what format will the paging from the MFS be to respond SES units?? Their existing BOMS system wouldn't be able to handle it would it ??

Country Fire Service / Re: Murray Bridge CFS Truck Rollover
« on: March 03, 2006, 12:36:33 PM »
Might be worth posting these pics up at the station - (A) as a reminder to the crews why we don't stand up on the back whilst travelling and (B) as a reminder to the drivers what can happen when you drive a big heavy truck 20kmh over the speed limit, through red lights and in and out of traffic (not saying that was occuring here).

Seems a bit sad seeing the 'old girl' sitting there like that, no doubt the guys that rode that rig will have many fond memories. At least the Murray Bridge guys will have the use of the old Belair Pumper until their type 2 arrives.

password of news. Just copy it from the FTP server and paste it into one of your directories, it is about 6mb.

Sounds like you have all the facts and have conducted your own investigation Robert, if not then maybe you should keep those opinions to yourself  :x.

How do you know something completely out of the drivers control didn't happen, maybe a dog or kid ran in front of the truck and he had to swerve out of the way to avoid hitting them.

I'm sure in good time all the facts will come out, at the moment though we should keep our judgements and theories to ourselves and hope that those involved make a speedy and complete recovery.

« on: March 03, 2006, 08:05:28 AM »
Hey Robert, if drivers are such a problem in your brigade then why not get your truck license and help solve the problem.

I know many brigades will contribute $$$$ to the process, some will pay for the last lesson and the test. It's a win win, you get your license and the brigade gets a driver.

Bring it up with your operations or management committees.

All Equipment discussion / Re: Ordering of PBI Gold
« on: March 01, 2006, 11:49:46 AM »
I know this has been discussed before, but I thought the Group Officers in Region One decided that PBI was only to be worn to structure fires and alarms. Has anything about this come out in writing or changed recently ??

I found this pic on the promotions unit website of a brigade in Region One at an MVA, just wanted to know where we stand on this now.

Incident Operations / Re: New Fixed Alarm System
« on: February 27, 2006, 11:35:11 AM »

Are the MFS really going to give up the CFS fixed alarms they monitor without a struggle? Believe it when i see it

MFS don't have any say as to who monitors the alarm, if a business owner wants to have it monitored by a security company or the CFS then it's up to them.

We have one premesis in our area with a full FIP covering a major community centre that was previously monitored by the MFS, then a security company came in and gave them a much cheaper price for monitoring and it was switched to them, now we get called there for Private Alarms rather than Fixed Alarms even though the panel hasn't changed.

The MFS won't like loosing the extra $$$$ but unfortunately it has bugger all to do with them.

SA Firefighter General / Useless Facts - WHAT DOES THE LETTER K MEAN?
« on: February 26, 2006, 07:57:49 AM »
Someone was recently asking why MFS and many other fire services around the world use the letter K in there radio transmissions, this might explain it - sort of.

WHAT DOES THE LETTER K MEAN?

The use of the letter K is a holdover from the days of telegraph. It was sent at the end of a transmission to indicate that I am finished sending and I await your reply. It is similar to the military use of the word over.

Incident Operations / Re: New Fixed Alarm System
« on: February 26, 2006, 07:31:26 AM »
Actually speaking with the CFS Telco guys about the WFAM it sounds like the EMA brigades that have alarms monitored by MFS will also have them switched to WFAM. The CFS WFAM is going to be a lot cheaper for the premesis than having it monitored by MFS.

Incident Operations / Re: SAMFS Response Paging
« on: February 02, 2006, 01:36:19 PM »
Nothing logical about it.

Some groups don't trust the SOC guys to do the response paging and have decided that all response messages must come from MFS.

Even when someone calls CFS direct they have to pass it on to MFS to do the paging, definately a case of double handling and increasing response times.

The 24P goes to Littlehampton and the Rescue goes to Aldinga Beach. Callsign for the pump/rescue is Barker Rescue.

Check with Brett Pollini at the State Training Centre, I believe he was put in charge of coming up with some S.O.P's etc regarding water rescues & boat fires.

SA Firefighter General / Re: Urban Fire Brigades Are Better...
« on: January 05, 2006, 09:46:53 PM »
I won't comment on the 'who's better' issue but I think our stations in general are a little second rate - right throughout the service.

When you look at the stations the vollie brigades are getting in the CFA it is easy to be jealous. I spent some time at a vollie station recently, this is a brigade doing around 350 runs a year with three appliances and a specialist vehicle, they have just received a brand new two story station with one or their meeting rooms nearly bigger than our engine bay!! It has a fully functional office, two kitchens and weights room and a rec room for the guys to hang out in. It is a very impressive vollie station and makes ours look laughable.

I don't think it would surprise too many people to hear that the CFA are in general a bit better off than the CFS and that their Government is somewhat more generous than ours when it comes to budgets, just look at the paid staff numbers 100 for CFS around 800 for the CFA.
