OFF Topic / The rain is coming
« on: January 13, 2007, 08:28:39 AM »
in about 6 - 8 weeks
I was at the Mt Bold fire and a farm said don't drive over there you will get bogged.
I asked why he said
That a natural spring is near and when this part of his land gets water logged it is the change of seasons in about 6 weeks and he had been on the farm for a long time.
I guess only time will tell
also on the radio the other day, the ostriches are starting to lay their eggs and they only do this if the season is going to be good, just another story

Country Fire Service / What does the VFBA do ? Debate
« on: September 20, 2006, 08:34:25 AM »
They are good at organising raffles, competitions, having meetings and saying good luck for the fire season (don’t forget free trips OS)
I hate some of the stuff that comes from the UFU, but they look after the members.
Were does the VFBA stand on appliance issues ( eg some brigades lose a pumper for a 24) Lion PPE, crew levels, equipment on appliances, training etc etc

Just some thoughts to get a thread going

Incident Operations / Dual Response
« on: August 18, 2006, 11:29:14 AM »
Why do we have a dual response of the MFS and SES for rescues in the MFS area :?
MFS: RESPOND RESCUE GENERAL 18/08/06 10:34,79 STUART RD,SOUTH PLYMPTON, MAP 141 F 3 ,,MAN STUCK IN FLOOR,409 72620 451*CFSRES:
Then
task canceled. brooklyn park mfs on site.
The MFS will  respond a lot faster 99% of the time. They are at the  station.
I would have thought that the MFS are getting paid why waist time of the SES.
They should be able to handle all rescues in MFS area. If not give them the extra equipment to complete the tasks.
Or is it all political

Country Fire Service / Chevrons question
« on: August 14, 2006, 02:21:19 PM »
Do brigades still issue chevrons when they are due or is this a thing of the past  :?
1 Chevron = 2 Years service
Red Star = 10 Years service
Gold Star = 20 Years service

Country Fire Service / Training Probelms
« on: July 29, 2006, 02:09:20 PM »
Why does the CFS have a maximum amount of people you can have trained for BA,RCR,Hazmat and other courses :?
Should it not be a minimum  :?
If your brigade can have for example only 10 BA operators, what happens to the other members who are keen to have this skill. I have been told to bad you are at your maximum level.
What happens if a member that  can't make calls for a while or only go to a few calls. Do you take them off the Magic CFS list and add another member to do the course.
No wonder the CFS is finding it hard to keep members if you can't train them, they will just go and find something else.
Do other brigades and groups have this problem

SAMFS / Purchase of land Seaford and Aldinga
« on: June 30, 2006, 02:19:58 PM »
This is from the MFS Union website
http://www.ufusa.asn.au/wordback6.pdf
SEAFORD/ALDINGA
The Union was pleased to note that following extensive lobbying from both the SAMFS and the UFU the Government recently purchased land at both Seaford and Aldinga which is earmarked as future SAMFS Fire Stations. The Union has always held the view that as all people now pay the Emergency Services Levy, they should be entitled to the provision of the best available emergency service response.

« on: June 02, 2006, 04:23:20 PM »
Does anyone remember the ship (i think wheat ship)fire at Port Adelaide in I about 1989.
For about 3 weeks the CFS did Change of quarters to MFS stations.
I remember seeing the following brigades around town and other stations

Blackwood
Burnside
Eden Hills
Happy Valley
Morphett Vale
Oakbank-Balhannah
Stirling
I think there was a heap more

SA Firefighter General / Quality of food
« on: January 25, 2006, 07:21:46 AM »
I have noticed that the quality of food at fires has gone downhill.
At the Willunga fire lots of people complained about the food. When you have busted your bum for the day or night you would expect to get feed well.
In this day and age when it is hard to keep members you think they would feed you well.

SA Firefighter General / Weather is out, late summer
« on: January 13, 2006, 07:25:34 AM »
I have noticed over the last few years the weather is  about a month and half out (late summer again)
At my place we get strong winds at night and early morning in November and the tree drops bark and leaves all over the place. I have noticed that this has started to have in January.
I was speaking to a mate at Pt August and he said the wind were late up that way.
What do others think about the weather being late

SA Firefighter General / stop/slow - speed up sign
« on: November 04, 2005, 01:57:15 PM »
Where can I get a STOP/ SLOW sign from :?
I am sure that the sign I use has STOP, but the other side has HAVE A LOOK AND SPEED UP.
I do like to wave the sign at the faces of the drivers and make out that I am going to drop it on the car. It slows them down

All Equipment discussion / Do we need Scanias ??
« on: September 21, 2005, 12:07:04 PM »
Yes I would love a Scania, but do we need them.Is it only a cosmetic thing :?
What is wrong with the Hino or Isuzu  :?
Would it be better to have an appliance with a PTO and better lockers than waste money on a Scania or have more type 2 pumpers :?

SA Firefighter General / Keep pushing the boundaries
« on: September 18, 2005, 03:15:59 PM »
Well done to the CFS brigade members for using fire hoods,
Yes some people are what if
It has not been approved
We need people to ask these questions, but more importantly we need volunteers to push the boundaries (not in a dangerous way)
Just a few things that Volunteers have done and introduced

Fire appliance made by firefighters
   90m hose reels
   Monitors
   Paging of fire calls
   PPV
   Blue lights on fire appliances
   Hooligan tool
   Turn out pants and coat

The list just keeps going
Keep up the good work

SA Firefighter General / PROTECTIVE HOOD
« on: July 19, 2005, 10:54:52 AM »
My question is do you wear a protective hood when in BA :?

I have heard both good and ban about this, I would like some opinions
Example
The good - It protects you
The bad - You lose your sense of the heat in the building

SA Firefighter General / Karoonda Fire Station
« on: June 22, 2005, 11:59:09 AM »
Has the Karoonda fire station been fixed ?

I thought the new fire stations like Karoonda should have been built to handle sever weather.
Is the CFS looking into the this??And will new fire stations be able to handle the same kind of weather ?
