Country Fire Service / Operation NOMAD
« on: February 20, 2006, 08:27:41 AM »
Have any Brigades been contacted by their local/nearest Police station regarding someone in their area that is a suspect for operation NOMAD?  I had a call last week from one of our local Police officers informing me that someone had just moved to the area and to be vigilant. We also had three new people attend the station on Monday night wanting to join (awesome for us) and the Police officer was there asell. Good Policing on his behalf to give me a phone call. I guess this would have been picked up in the Criminal history check.

SO... although your from meningie (??) you want to know about fire bans in places like the west coast, lower eyre pen, mid north, north east or west pastoral... etc etc....

maybe it should be up to regions to page them out to the region themselves, but i dont see a problem with the current system, if the OCOs have two seconds to do the regions a favour then im sure they will

Point taken. Personally i don't care how many messages come thru, just thought it may save some people (OCO's) some time, but after all, the CFS is about helping each other :-D. And yeah it might be a heads up if we know when there is going to be a bugger of a day somewhere - for strike teams etc.

mengcfs, isn't a case of the people is SAAS comms taking time to respond us, rather than the ambo's themselves?

I realise this mate, but what it does ensure is that when the SAAS crew pager goes off and they contact their Comms for details they are now making sure CFS has been or is about to be responded. Maybe a different story in the city, where crews ie SAAS and CFS are not likely to know each other.

No not confused, I know what the difference is between a Region, SOCC an OCO and a Regional Officer. What i am saying is that when SOCC send a page for a TFB, why don't they just send a state wide page rather than having (in some cases) the Region (after they have received the staff page) contact SOCC to send another page to the vollies in the relevant Region(s). Region 3 is a prime example, rather than a Regional Officer send a page (physically) from the Region, they contact SOCC to send it for them. Surely they can send a page and not trouble the OCO's who have more stuff to do in preperation for the TFB.
I don't know but it may be easier to send one page to everybody. Even tho the page says 'On call staff confirm' surely the vollies know to ignore that, then if any other relevant people (AAS, AMR, Air crew etc) need more info that can be done seperately. Just my thoughts.

Have known of incidents where Brigades having the same name are responded - Unfortunately Brigade X is responded to incident Y - 600km away. Mistakes do happen and they are very quickly rectified. Our OCO's are under extreme amounts of pressure at stages and they do a fantastic job.
Back to the topic at hand......................

We had an info night where we invited our Ambos over to the station. We expalined to them the dangers of just jumping into an unstabalised vehicle amongst other things. We also set an air bag off live (by a qualified person of course) and showed them some videos of what air bags can do if you are in the way. We don't have a problem with SAAS not responding us now :-D

In our Region every BA operator was a letter to their home address advising them of times, dates and venues for the size up, so really the it is up to individual to make the effort and just get it done and the officers are really not in the loop to have a say if it gets done or not.

GO THE PBI GOLD!!

Quick question.
How many people get a TFB message from SHQ and then one from Region.
Myself, used to, but the last few TFB days just the one message from Region (albeit thru SHQ).

Country Fire Service / Re: Duplication of pager messages
« on: February 16, 2006, 07:30:09 AM »
they're not duplicates but I don't know why SHQ (say) can't send a page
to all the region maildrops then oncall staff specifically if they want.

Good point, i spose we are not sure exactly where the pagers are going, but like Darius pointed out (above) why can't SHQ just send a state wide page to vollies and then one to staff for confirmation. Might not be as much "oh gees, there it goes again - same message."
I guess we will never know!!

Why is it that particularly on TFB days there is an influx of duplicate pager messages? In 'most cases' SHQ send a state wide page, then each region sends a page and then even Brigades send one.

SHQ: SIG INC: TOTAL FIRE BANS HAVE BEEN DECLARED FOR 16/2/06 IN THE NWP, WC, EEP, LEP, FL, MN, MLR, YP, MUR, USE, LSE. ON-CALL STAFF CONFIRM. < 15/02/2006 16:28:00

R1HQ: TOTAL FIRE BANS HAVE BEEN DECLARED FOR THURS 16/02/06 IN THE MLR AND MUR FIRE BAN DISTRICTS FROM RO PATTEN 15/02/2006 4:33:59 PM

TOTAL FIRE BANS HAVE BEEN DECLARED FOR THURSDAY FEBRUARY 16 FOR THE WEST COAST, EASTERN EYRE AND LOWER EYRE PENINSULA FIRE BAN DISTRICTS. R6HQ OPS 15/02/2006 4:41:40 PM

R4HQ FIRE BANS HAVE BEEN ISSUED FOR TOMORROW (THURSDAY 16TH FEB) IN THE NORTH WEST PASTORAL, FLINDERS & MID NORTH FIRE BAN DISTRICTS. 15/02/2006 4:46:29 PM

SHQ: REGION 3 INFO: TOTAL FIRE BANS HAVE BEEN DECLARED 16/02/06 FOR MOUNT LOFTY RANGES, MURRAY LANDS AND UPPER SOUTH EAST > 15/02/2006 16:48:58

SHQ: TOTAL FIRE BANS HAVE BEEN DECLARED FOR 16/2/06 IN THE MID NORTH, MT LOFTY RANGRS, YK PEN, MURLANDS. - FROM R2HQ. < 15/02/2006 16:51:44

In some cases the Regional pager messages have been sent from SHQ. Surely our OCO's have enough to do!

Now don't get me wrong, more info the better right! but is their a protocol on such things. The trend seems to be SHQ send a page (sometimes to staff, sometimes state wide) then Regions send a page with their respective fire ban districts.
What are other peoples thoughts?
(I must be bored picking on things like this)!!!

This is a great opportunity, not sure why Brigades/Groups are not taking full advantage and kitting out every BA wearer. I know our Brigade will be making sure every operator has the PBI gold.

The chances of a younger person getting burned are higher than of someone who has years of experience. We got to blend them slowly into the system. But of course humans all make mistakes.
I Was Advised By A Firey That He Was Supprised To See So Many Young Members On A Task Force To KI, Eg Members In The Service For Like 2 Months.

Shouldn't There Be A Time Limit With The Service Before You Can Attend Such Iccidents?

Sure is, minimum 12 months and level 2.

Had to send ours away some time ago for repairs.  If you unplug the decoder all it means is you won't have a siren (if you use one).
Looks like the decoder bugs are slowly making their way around the state

Blinky - great idea - tax break for "active volunteers.
The tax break is a positive that SAVFBA could look at - would obviously need a criteria - ie at the end of a financial year the brigade submits paperwork to the Govt - stating that member x met the criteria - maybe 50% training and 20 % calls or what ever is deemed appropriate???? This would save the 'new member' who joined for the tax advantage

It also means even MORE paperwork....... :x

If you attend training you are entitled to claim mileage..as a Capt I am allowed to claim phone calls but would be frightened to calculate how much I could claim for fuel, especially as I often respond in my own vehicle which then is used as a command vechicle...

But that is my contribution as a volunteer...if they start paying for everything it will be classified as an allowance and be taxable...

EVERY member can claim expenses for telephone calls etc.  Just fill out a pink form with evidence of expenditure and hand it to the Group finance officer. In most cases the fuel reimbursment is for travel to meetings and not so often (if ever) for fire calls. Sure it will come out of group budget but i don't think many groups actually spend their entire budget at the end of year (or do they).
Well done to you for having a good volunteer ethic about the use of your own vehicle. Not sure on your circumstances, but maybe the Group could look at managing the Command car to suit your needs if you are using your own vehicle that much or try to obtain another Command car for the Group. Miracles do happen - eventually - i think

Fire Fighter Training / Re: Combining training
« on: February 01, 2006, 12:27:56 PM »
Should the training organisations of MFS, CFS & SES be combined under SAFECOM to avoid duplication in standards and delivery of courses to volunteers ? I would envisage this would include training facilities being combined.

Not only are SAFECOM looking at such things as duplication of training etc, they are also looking at duplication of services, ie; CFS and SES in the same town.

PS: I have no problem with being trained by a different entity, if it's Nationally recognised training it shouldn't matter who delivers the training.

How many Brigades have actually had fittings and or taken delivery of their new PBI gold as a gift from the CFS and Government, and did ALL of your BA wearers get the new gear?
