Country Fire Service / Tracing calls
« on: September 14, 2005, 10:09:52 AM »
Hi all,
Had an interesting call on the ALERTS system last night. A call had rang in, reverse charges to our local number. It was very hard to hear or even talk to the caller as the recored voice of the Telstra lady asking us if we wanted to accept the charges was repeating herself. Amongst that the beeps of when a call taker entered the call. To us it sounded like someone was in real trouble. I don't think they wanted the fire service but that's who they rang. The Telstra lady (a real one this time) came on and said the caller had been disconnected and they had tried ringing twice before.
With the ERS7 system our Brigade used to trace calls (heaps of malicious ones) but these days with the ALERTS the trace would only go back to the telebridge. Maybe we have to put the phone at the station that rings first on the trace to get the original number it came from.
Do other Brigades trace calls - Any thoughts.

Ambos effectively reimburse for calls..... they pay volunteers something like $2 a call..... maybe something along this theory?

SAAS pay volunteer Ambos $5 per call, but the Ambo has to ensure they send in the paperwork otherwsie they dont get it! Also SAAS pay the volunteer's employer something - not sure how much tho.

Fire Fighter Training / Re: AIIMS course
« on: September 08, 2005, 10:10:02 AM »
The course is broken into several CFS_fiery. The intro to AIIMS course covers the basics of what is required by each section, ie planning, logistics etc. The next step if you like, is to choose which area you would like and attend a course purely and in more depth on that particular section.

When You Think About The Amount Of Driving We Do To The Station (Training, Call Outs). I Think It Would Be A Good Idea, But Then How Do They Police It?

I Mean Meetings & Course's You Get The Fuel Allowance Forms, But The Every Day Cost Of Training & Call Outs Add Up.

One Of The Guys I Worked With Said Couldn't You Claim It On Tax, As The CFS Can Be Classed As A Second Job.

Would Love To Hear Suggestions Or Feedback.

Just on the Tax thing, 'apparently' you don't have to declare the income from travel re-imbursment either.

Some groups re-emburse members for travel to meetings. Not sure if it happens for travel to station for a call outs tho.

Is the cheap rate for all vollies or just ones that are participating in a CFS capacity (static display or this year the main arena spectacular)?

Are they producing all the cards with the barcode on the bottom now and the CFS lanyard or is this just for Group Nominees.

Industrial & Private Fire Services / Re: private fire appliances
« on: August 24, 2005, 11:58:54 AM »
Adam, wayne is talking about a heavily RURAL area, where all the farmers etc pitch in during a fire, with the local CFS, because they know if they don't, No force in the world will stop the fire that develops.  It is different out there than it is towards the city.

Hi again people. Thanks for the input. I am from a "heavy rural area" not the hills. It is fantastic to see the private units and as has been mentioned they often outweigh the CFS appliances and provide exceptional support to us. Many a time have i worked with private units and everything seems to have ran very smoothly, i guess i would just hate to see something go pear shape involving a farmer who has given up his/her time to help others (like us) due to the good ol' Aussie spirit.  Like always, education is the key, and when us volunteer firefighters have finished with our families, knocked off work, walked the dog, returned from a CFS incident, eaten on the run to a CFS meeting and grown an extra pair of hands we maybe able to deliver it.
As long as EVERYONE stays safe.

That is great in theory. I can assure you (in our area anyway) that the community minded farmer come firefighter is only worried about one thing. Putting the fire on his/her property out, or stopping it from entering his/her property. Copious amounts of education will not enter the mind of the good spirited farmer when the "heat is on". If these very helpful private units wish to enter the fireground so be it, but on their head be it.

Incident Operations / Re: Friends / relations in an incident
« on: August 22, 2005, 02:38:29 PM »
I have been to a few where locals and/or relatives have been involved in MVA's and fatals. It is not uncommon in smaller communities where a CFS Brigade is situated.  Most of the time in smaller communities the Brigade members are pretty close knit so Brigade members talk in house to each other and cope that way. Also i can't say enough about our SPAM team - they are FANTASTIC.

As stated before there is a CFS standard for private units. They are meant to contact the Brigade/Group controlling the incident to say that they are actually on the fire ground assisting, but how on earth do we Police it :?

Country Fire Service / Re: CB radio on trucks
« on: August 22, 2005, 02:18:52 PM »
UHF (CB) radios are very handy for rural Brigades. We use them to talk to other agencies on the way to jobs (far more easier and quicker than organising a GRN multi agency talkgroup) and to talk to private fire appliances such as farmers. The UHF channels are published in the Council Bushfire info kit that is posted to everyone in the district.

Hi MATTE,
In regard to the below statement of yours. The CFS is a registered training organisation ans therefore do have policies in place for people wanting to join the CFS with prior training. It is called Recognition of current competency (RCC) or Recognition of prior learning (RPL). This is handled thru Brigade, Group, Region and State training officers. Sure there may have to be some units completed to align with CFS policy but it may be worth looking into and the new member may not have to complete a full CFS course.  And i agree with you on the CFS being more uniform with uniforms! I beleive the CFS is looking into this. If anyone out there has a copy of the Uniform manual that everyone is talking about but can't seem to put their hands on- please enlighten us!
Adam

It is a waste of money training someone who has a lot more operational experience than most then he has to do a new recruits course (bff1) if you question this persons experience he has been with a international Fire Service for over 20 years....

Other Government Agencies / Re: What the SES does
« on: August 11, 2005, 04:34:01 PM »
In our area the SES is responded when the CFS is (for VA's anyway) generally for traffic. They are a RCR unit but numbers are dwindling so the CFS and SES work together on that as the CFS has members trained. Usually for storm/flood damage both servcies are responded. The only thing that SES does solo is water rescue, other than that CFS do it or both services.

« on: August 10, 2005, 12:28:01 PM »
Why can't we name names? Are these appointments state secrets? :-)

Andrea is a great VSO - lucky Region 5. But who is acting acting for Region 3?

Yes Kat you are right, Andrea is a great VSO - Not sure if she would like her name distributed through this forum and the internet (although it is all good about her) - or, prehaps she might! At the moment the acting Region 3 VSO is David Baker.

The acting VSO in Region 5 is the ex acting VSO from Region 3 (who was previously the admin officer). If that makes any sense without naming names. Unfortunately with all the staff changes in the service it is hard to keep up. Prehaps a memo to Brigades is appropriate so as we at least know who to ask for when calling the office.

Country Fire Service / Re: new baseball hat's
« on: June 06, 2005, 10:41:02 AM »
The baseball caps are not the ones mentioned in the SA tenders, they are Khaki's.  The ones ordered are green with the red and yellow check around the sides.  You may have seen them as some paid staff have got them.
Groups had the opportunity to decide if they wanted to order or not hence the difference in hats ordered to number of vollies.
