SA Firefighter General / Body found in home gutted by bushfire
« on: January 18, 2007, 10:00:20 AM »
January 18, 2007 09:46am
A BODY has been found in a house gutted by a bushfire south of Adelaide.

The person was an occupant of the house destroyed by the blaze at Willunga, which started about 10.30pm CDT yesterday, a police spokesman said.

The remains were discovered early today during a search by police.

"The identity of the person has not been established," the police spokesman said.

The bushfire destroyed about 15ha of grass and scrub, along with the home, between Delabole and Bangor roads at Willunga South.

About 125 firefighters took more than two hours to contain the fire, the Country Fire Service said.

Country Fire Service / Confidentiality

When signing a new member the CFS does not have a confidentiality clause for the member to sign. Should the CFS have one? Do Brigades make their own?

Hi all,
When there is a paging outage in your area does your Brigade/Group get notified.

We have had several in our group but our Brigade hasn't been notified - Obviously someone did tho, maybe Region?

Hi all,
Just a bit of info you may wish to take back to your Brigades.

Just so you don't spend time looking for it under the bonnet at your next MVA.
Cheers.

SA Firefighter General / Driver Reviver
« on: April 13, 2006, 11:29:42 AM »
Any Brigades/Units conducting a Driver Reviver this Easter weekend. Meningie CFS is conducting one on Thursday night with the Lions Club finishing off on the Monday.  We have signed up with the Official Driver Reviver program which gets us Tea, Coffe, Cordial, Biscuits, Cups, Stirrers and everything else you need to do one.  The stuff is donated by Bushells, Arnotts and Cottee's.  Transport SA have also put up huge fold down Driver Reviver 1km ahead reflective signs each end of town.  They also gave us an A frame to go at the site with a huge arrow.
Exciting stuff when you get this much support :-D

OFF Topic / Programming ubct8 scanner
« on: April 10, 2006, 08:32:17 PM »
Hi all,
Our brigade has purchased a ubct8 scanner to monitor and record GRN traffic to cover our butts and save the comms people a bit of time writing logs.  I am however having trouble programming it (a little technically challenged when it comes to scanners).  I have looked at Matt B's site and have had many e-mails to him but i guess i am just giving up now. If anyone can help please PM me, or feel free to call in and see us at Meningie!!

Country Fire Service / Intruder alarms
« on: February 21, 2006, 01:44:05 PM »
Hi all,
Just interested to see how effective intruder alarms and or keypad access systems are in relation to a fire station. Of course this will differ from location to location. I see alot of 'Intruder alarm activated' type messages on the pager site, interested to know if these are genuine or just creepy crawlees setting the system off. Also, even tho the security systems are connected to the pagers, does this also alert Police via a monitored set up?

Country Fire Service / Operation NOMAD
« on: February 20, 2006, 08:27:41 AM »
Have any Brigades been contacted by their local/nearest Police station regarding someone in their area that is a suspect for operation NOMAD?  I had a call last week from one of our local Police officers informing me that someone had just moved to the area and to be vigilant. We also had three new people attend the station on Monday night wanting to join (awesome for us) and the Police officer was there asell. Good Policing on his behalf to give me a phone call. I guess this would have been picked up in the Criminal history check.

Country Fire Service / Duplication of pager messages
« on: February 15, 2006, 03:31:50 PM »
Why is it that particularly on TFB days there is an influx of duplicate pager messages? In 'most cases' SHQ send a state wide page, then each region sends a page and then even Brigades send one.

SHQ: SIG INC: TOTAL FIRE BANS HAVE BEEN DECLARED FOR 16/2/06 IN THE NWP, WC, EEP, LEP, FL, MN, MLR, YP, MUR, USE, LSE. ON-CALL STAFF CONFIRM. < 15/02/2006 16:28:00

R1HQ: TOTAL FIRE BANS HAVE BEEN DECLARED FOR THURS 16/02/06 IN THE MLR AND MUR FIRE BAN DISTRICTS FROM RO PATTEN 15/02/2006 4:33:59 PM

TOTAL FIRE BANS HAVE BEEN DECLARED FOR THURSDAY FEBRUARY 16 FOR THE WEST COAST, EASTERN EYRE AND LOWER EYRE PENINSULA FIRE BAN DISTRICTS. R6HQ OPS 15/02/2006 4:41:40 PM

R4HQ FIRE BANS HAVE BEEN ISSUED FOR TOMORROW (THURSDAY 16TH FEB) IN THE NORTH WEST PASTORAL, FLINDERS & MID NORTH FIRE BAN DISTRICTS. 15/02/2006 4:46:29 PM

SHQ: REGION 3 INFO: TOTAL FIRE BANS HAVE BEEN DECLARED 16/02/06 FOR MOUNT LOFTY RANGES, MURRAY LANDS AND UPPER SOUTH EAST > 15/02/2006 16:48:58

SHQ: TOTAL FIRE BANS HAVE BEEN DECLARED FOR 16/2/06 IN THE MID NORTH, MT LOFTY RANGRS, YK PEN, MURLANDS. - FROM R2HQ. < 15/02/2006 16:51:44

In some cases the Regional pager messages have been sent from SHQ. Surely our OCO's have enough to do!

Now don't get me wrong, more info the better right! but is their a protocol on such things. The trend seems to be SHQ send a page (sometimes to staff, sometimes state wide) then Regions send a page with their respective fire ban districts.
What are other peoples thoughts?
(I must be bored picking on things like this)!!!

Country Fire Service / Claim to Fame!
« on: February 01, 2006, 10:12:15 AM »
Hi all,
For some light hearted discussion! What Interesting or unusual things has your Brigade attended?
Our Brigade was asked by a stunt school in Adelaide to provide fire cover for a Chinese Who dares wins shoot in Meningie. It involved a Chinese contestant riding a jet ski thru a canal that was only the width of two jet skis whilst the sides of the canal were set alight.  She did make it all the way thru the 'burning walls' without falling off! She was so petrafied.  The film crew were so funny, they did all these close up action shots of us holding the branches and close ups of the flashing lights. So Meningies' claim to fame is being on Chinese TV!

Country Fire Service / Hoax fundraiser
« on: January 19, 2006, 02:06:28 PM »
Had a call at work today from this mob - Beware.  Has anyone else received any calls?

13 January 2006 - 4:43 AM

Media Release : HOAX FUNDRAISING SCAM

Media Release

Emergency Services including the SA Country Fire Service (CFS) and the State Emergency Service (SES) are warning the community to be vigilant regarding hoax phone calls requesting donations.

Both organizations have received reports from members of the public across the state who have been phoned and asked to donate money to help fund initiatives including an information booklet to educate volunteers and members of the community.

These donation requests have not been authorised by either organisation.

Although CFS and SES brigades/units do undertake fundraising activities throughout the year, phoning members of the community and asking for donations is not an approach they take.

If unsure of the validity of the caller the community is reminded not to provide any credit card or personal details over the phone and ask for the caller's details.

Anyone who has received or does receive a call asking for donations for CFS, SES or emergency services funding, should report this immediately to Bank SA Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. For police attendance, please call 13 11 44.

Country Fire Service / Official bushfire warnings
« on: December 23, 2005, 12:25:56 PM »
I was browsing the Nova 91.9 radio station website and noticed that they have a posting on one of their pages that they are Adelaide's official bushfire warning station.  We listen to Nova all day at work i have not heard one bushfire warning.  With the amount of warninigs issued in the past few days i would have thought i would have at least heard one! I know the ABC is very efficient in issuing warnings and this is the station the CFS advises to listen to for warnings. Have Nova done this off their own back??
Go to nova919.com.au the on air and scroll down, you will see the CFS logo.

Hi all,
Not sure how long this has been around but go to Google and Google GOOGLE EARTH. I'm not sure how often it is updated but it is an amazing thing - could be used to monitor large fire activity as it is fairly detailed in most areas (even zoomed in on a pyrimid in Egypt some of our friends went to)!!

Country Fire Service / Tracing calls
« on: September 14, 2005, 10:09:52 AM »
Hi all,
Had an interesting call on the ALERTS system last night. A call had rang in, reverse charges to our local number. It was very hard to hear or even talk to the caller as the recored voice of the Telstra lady asking us if we wanted to accept the charges was repeating herself. Amongst that the beeps of when a call taker entered the call. To us it sounded like someone was in real trouble. I don't think they wanted the fire service but that's who they rang. The Telstra lady (a real one this time) came on and said the caller had been disconnected and they had tried ringing twice before.
With the ERS7 system our Brigade used to trace calls (heaps of malicious ones) but these days with the ALERTS the trace would only go back to the telebridge. Maybe we have to put the phone at the station that rings first on the trace to get the original number it came from.
Do other Brigades trace calls - Any thoughts.
Adam
