Country Fire Service / Re: Use of fire sirens
« on: April 18, 2011, 09:46:08 PM »
I think that during high fire days sounding a siren is a good idea. The earlier you can get a warning out the better, if the siren is sounded shortly after the page you can't get much quicker than that. As previously said people then investigate, we all know how important an early warning is. I had a fire near our place and the best warning I got was a firebomber going over the top of my house with it's siren going it got my attention!. I then got on the paging website and scanner to find out where it exactly was. Nothing official came out on radio or web for about 25 to 30 minutes.

SAMFS / Re: RECRUITMENT 2011

When does the "Job Offer" actually happen?

Is it the same time you start recruit course as technically you are now their employee?

Or do they wait till the end of your course and basically you have no choice to go to say Mount Gambier or can you stay on the relieving roster till there is a postion you want?

Cheers

Fire000,

There is a Uniden UBCD396T on Ebay brand new in Aus.

And no I am NOT the seller  :-)

I recently picked one up for $400 but it was a used item, so you may pick this one up for a good price.

I have not programmed mine yet as I have ordered a cable from OS, so I cannot really comment on the programming side yet. But I have read that the easiest way is to use the software.

Thanks All,

Was wondering if there was anywhere online that lists the modules of training that is required to obtain SFF.

Also is there a minimum amount of years after joining you would have to complete if you allready had the necessary quals?.

Cheers

Thanks

SA Firefighter General / Roof Fires

Just wondering,

Have they ever attempted to develop roof space sensors to detect a roof fire? as there have been recent examples that have caused considerable damage. I'm assuming by the time the owners know there is a fire in the roof space it has allready well involved?

SAMFS / recognition of training
« on: December 22, 2010, 12:26:05 PM »
Hi all,

Was wondering how the SAMFS view training from external agencies that deliver the various firefighting Certificates/training? Is it recognised and do you have to do it all again if you joined the SAMFS.

Cheers

Fire Fighter Training / firefighter training syllabus
« on: December 03, 2010, 05:46:27 PM »
Hi all,

Was wondering if all firefighters are trained to the same syllabus or standard?

Does SAMFS training match CFS. Obviously there would have to be some differences, and are these two services the only agencies that provide such training i.e. can you get training through government education such as TAFE.

Cheers

SAMFS / Job Satisfaction
« on: September 23, 2010, 09:39:50 PM »
Hi all,

Just wondering as to the amount of job satisfaction that guys feel they get from being in the MFS. I have been given mixed answers such as "You see people having really bad days" e.g. not that much job satisfaction?. I'm interested in a job that makes a difference not just $$$$$, not into an office job for a big coporation which it's top priority is making money for the shareholders.

Country Fire Service / Injuries whilst on duty

Hi all,

Just wondering what the go is when a volunteer firefighter is injured in the line of duty. Does the government pay for the medical costs and any rehab? what happens if the worst does happen?. Has anyone had any issues with regards to getting looked after.

Cheers

Country Fire Service / Re: over-issuing public warnings
« on: January 24, 2010, 03:58:33 PM »
The best warning I've got was a low flying fixed waterbomber!. In addition a second fixed wing bomber had a siren fitted which I thought was very effective. The best info was off the online scanner, the official warning messages were way out with the actual events.

I would have thought that the government could have got all the leading designs together considering it's a national issue. Then have one of the government agencies test and evaluate each one and come up with the benchmark design. They then could have a list of companies that are approved to supply and install this particular bunker/shelter across the country. I guess the government does not want to go there as they would be held liable if it all went pear shaped.

cheers

Now I'm confused  :? so 70K as a senior firefighter is the Max salary per year including shiftwork allowances/penalties. I would have thought that is a good wage?. So it's at least 7yrs after recruit training until you reach 70K?.

Cheers all.
