Just come to Mt Gambier where they knock back anything that even smells like progress!

Yep, spot on Cammo,
We get frequently told we are the busiest station out of Adelaide and we still don't have career 24/7 staffing............
Oh! that's right.......we are not a suburb of Adelaide :x

Emergency Vehicles / Re: VICSES 2 of Pakenham's trucks

Quote from vr_driver
Oh, yes... that was just one of many issues.

There's been plenty of mechanical issues.

Ours alone has been put off the road at least half a dozen times because of serious failures.
These have been:
broken cam housing in the engine,
broken gear change cable (column shift),
a bolt came loose in the back diff - creating a big hole as it spat it out and crunched everything inside.
the truck had to get new springs
a steering pin snapped from the LHD conversion to right hand drive.
air conditioning not working
Fuel leak (current problem at the moment - yes it's off the road) -again!

But they are good trucks...

Last line there is a pearler....I'd hate to see a bad one! :-D
But after all, they are FORDS

Country Fire Service / Re: Captains

Gee, If only a few captains of surrounding brigades down this way could read this post, they might lead by example and show up for calls WEARING PPE and if it wasn't asking too much of them BRING A filtered FIRE APPLIANCE ALSO!!!
That's my 2 cents worth.
Cheers!!

SASES / Re: SAMFS & Chainsaws
« on: January 28, 2008, 12:31:22 AM »
Don't see the big deal really!! :?
Our 1 pump has had a chainsaw on it as long as I have been in the job (15 years) and I believe from reliable sources that there was one on there long before the local SES was formed, so I don't really think there is a duplication issue.

SA Firefighter General / Re: Helmet Camera
« on: January 09, 2008, 10:34:39 PM »
I think "Zippy" has put in the most sensible post so far!
If the footage taken from a camera is being used for internal Fire Service use only,(e.g. training or record keeping) then really, where is the issue?

I don't agree with footage from incidents going on Youtube or being supplied to the media, UNLESS sanctioned by the Fire Service as public interest or whatever.

Also, if a member of another service has an issue and politely asks that they not be recorded, then turn it off!(no big deal really)
I know that most reasonable Emergency Service personnel I work with from other agencies wouldn't have an issue, as you can be very easily filmed at incidents by media agencies anyhow!

I wonder sometimes if those that have a big issue with being filmed, lack confidence in doing their job correctly or are worried about being seen in the wrong P.P.E. etc.
Do the right thing, and there won't be an issue, and if you make a stuff up then at least you have something to watch and learn from.(remember...TRAINING USE)

Cheers, Mat

I had a search online, and it doesn't appear that they are rated as intrinsically safe.

If using one at a job where it could be an issue, I would offload the camera, helmet torch, portable radio and mobile phone if you carry one to be on the safe side! :-)

I ordered one last night thru E-Bay for $185 AU with all the bits and pieces and are really looking forward to it turning up!
I checked out Jono's link and was impressed, and it gave me ideas for use in the scrub car.

Should be good!! :-D

The "sim registration failed" will vanish once the "migration" has taken place.
Our appliance took a little longer than the expected dates we were told.

Country Fire Service / Re: Introduction of aerial applainces to the CFS
« on: December 24, 2007, 09:16:51 PM »
Yep, count me in too! :-D
I have used a Skyjet at lots of varied jobs, and they are very versatile due to the fact they can perform many more roles than just a typical aerial monitor/ladder.
You have to think outside the square sometimes!!(and work within appliances capabilities)

SASES / Re: Could CFS brigades form SES units?
« on: December 24, 2007, 11:24:19 AM »
Very true Blinky!
I was just generalising in my post.
Many brigades would not need further vehicles, perhaps more equipment and training.

SASES / Re: Could CFS brigades form SES units?
« on: December 23, 2007, 09:14:42 PM »
In this day and age of volunteer shortages in most communities, it would be more practical to have the SES style appliance rebadged CFS and that brigade use it when required.

Maybe CFS could offer other courses to bridge the gaps, but there would have to be cost savings with keeping that brigade "one service" instead of opening an additional unit requiring additional admin and other assorted costs.

SA Firefighter General / Re: How long from call to page?
« on: December 17, 2007, 08:18:47 PM »
From previous experience between 1 to 2 minutes on average for a fire.
Depends how busy the 000 system is at the time etc.

All Equipment discussion / Re: SAMFS 'ROSA' 14 Appliance
« on: October 15, 2007, 08:17:07 PM »
Their looks are deceiving! :-D

I found ours to be quite usefull at grass fires for a "quick attack" and would be quite happy to use it where ever you would use a National Parks style of 1000 litre 4 wheel drive fire unit (e.g Toyota Landcruiser,Datsun Patrol)Ute's.

They were never intended to be used in more severe areas that you would send a Fireking or CFS 24/34 appliance with all their burnover protection etc.

Appart from firefighting, it is a good crew transporter, tow vehicle for moving around RCR training cars and for whizzing down the street to get the crew lunch!

Overall, not a bad truck.

Cheers, Mat

SAMFS / Re: MFS fire trucks painted white
« on: September 17, 2007, 09:04:43 PM »
It is quite common for the roofs to be white but isn't standard thru the fleet.
We have our Skyjet and Isuzu MUP with white roofs whilst the Scania and 4WD ROSA both have red roofs and they are all mixtures of ages.

I don't think under the current chief you would see an all white MFS truck as I believe he thinks red is favourite choice of colour. :-)

Our services procedure would be to turn off lights and siren, advise commcen of delayed response (they might respond another appliance) and wait to it passes.

Not too much else you could do!
