SES SHQ this year have changed funding distribution to how active the Unit is.

My guess regards USAR is that new trailers are being distributed to more Units. The tools to go in the trailers would be funded by the Unit purchase.

Ok, now this is my understanding but have a nice chat infont of me with all these figures on it.

The model that was used to work out funding is based on an average number of jobs from the last 6 years. Now most people would think this is fine, but there are a few units out there that are being screwed over this because prior management failed to submit reports or for what ever other reason SHQ only has job details for the last 2 years. Bit of a difference between the average of 6 years of jobs over 6 years and 2 years of jobs over 6 years. I know of one unit that averaged around 300 jobs each year for the last 2 that according to SHQ do an average of 60 or so jobs a year. With the new funding that 'small' difference costs between $10000 and $20000 a year of potential budget.

With the USAR side of it. 6 Units in metro/near metro have been given USAR trailers to become part of the state USAR response. Of these units 2 (Noarlunga & Sturt) are fully setup and get the extra $10510 in the budget. The other 4 wont get the $10510 until they are fully capable. Which means they must purchase the extra equipment out of the Typical units budget. Adelaide Hills for example has (at the momment) $19365 in the budget t orun everything PLUS become fully capable to get this extra $10k. Mind you to help with this, Region is helping to fund hte start up of 2 of the 4 this year, the other 2 have to use their own budgets or wait til next year.Am I the only one that finds it hard to follow!?!?!?!

As for why USAR units get $10k while RCR gets only $1500. A large part of the USAR budget goes into supplies. Unlike other types of jobs we do, most of the USAR stuff is single use. There is only so many times you can cut a bit of wood.

Everyone gets the page. I too have wondered why Sturt run it like that. Either its a follow on from before we had teh MFS vetting our jobs or its a way to let everyone know if there is a crew or not. Personally I would hate to be in a meeting or something and have the pager go of 12 times for one job.

Funding for the SES is being cut big time at unit level. My unit for example this year had around $30000 to operate with - Mind you the bean counters at SAFECOM say we have $50000, but fail to note that some $20000 is lost to rent!

The budget for next year is some $19000(excluding rent). The way that it has been broken down is shocking. We get $200 a year for fuel - 1x truck and 2x 4WD, that should last about a week. Other strange things in the new budget model is that RCR units get an extra $1500, Air support units $750, and USAR units get some amount. The training budget for our unit will be $800.

Now these figures are from memory so maybe slightly out, I will attempt to get the full document given to Unit Managers last week. As you can imagine the Unit Managers let the people delivering the new budget know what they thought of it, with several walking out of the meeting.

So there is an insight to what is happening on the Oranage side of the world.

Did you arrive, do the job, and put a stop back before they went mobile ?

PLEASE PLEASE do that.. we have had a couple jobs where the CFS have gone too, done the job, and we didnt get a stop call. Nice way for us to waste our time looking for the job and so on.

Like I have said in another post, the area SES units cover compaired to that of CFS/MFS is huge. There are going to be a few more jobs done by the CFS/MFS I think.

72120 is Adelaide Hills (Mt Barker)

Is there a list around with the CFS station codes, as we have members wondering the same thing.. Well there is now that I pointed it out to them.

One big difference is the area members respond to the shed/unit/station/etc from.
CFS might pull in from a 2-3 Km area, while some SES units pull members from up to 20 Km away. I pass through 4 CFS areas before I get to my shed.

I couldn't tell you how many of those 720 were 'cut outs' our annual incident sheet just lists it as Road Accident Rescue.

But the point is still the same, the fire service (MFS/CFS) is not the only RCR provider in the State.

Ah, no such thing as "some RCR".

We do RCR :-)

What was meant Kat was that while CFS do RCR in some parts of the state, SES do it in other parts. I had a quick look but I couldn't find the total number of RCR jobs the CFS attended last financial year, but the SES had 720 RCR jobs.

State wide our top 3 jobs are Wind/Storm (1763 jobs), Flooding (944) and RCR (720). SES also assisted CFS in Fire Ops 161 times.

I suspect these incidents occur when you are already at a job, and we were placed in a queue... This happens a lot with SAPOL, if they already have another incident more important than yours, you can call all you like, but they won't come any faster...

Not always. I can think of one job we had, I heard the CFS brigade ask for us to attend over a scanner while I was just leaving the city. We received the page for the job just as I entered Mt Barker so about 30 min delay. We had no other tasks that day, and from memory there wasnt any other CFS brigades talking on the GRN for that period so I assume it was a quite day for all.

Some days things just get lost in communication I guess..

firetruck, do you know the call stats for the local SES brigades / stations / units (Whatever they are called)?

They sent the job numbers to all SES Units just the other week for the last financial year. I will see if i can get my hands on it and post the numbers.

Should also add, where the tin is still in place there is a wall dividing the truck bay from the comms/ops/meeting room/kitchen etc.

I will try and get a hold of the photos from my units camera and post some of them next week.

From what we where told on the Saturday after the storm, they think that the roller door on the left of the above picture gave in to the 150-200kmh winds. When that happened the wind got in and pushed the walls and roof off from the inside. The roller door that blew in was the parking spot for Karoonda Car 1. Karoonda Car 1, 24 and 24 where all undamaged from the event. The shed was built within the last few years to withstand a cat 5 storm.

That is the information that we where given or found out during the initial responce and the many trips to Karoonda since, and with one more trip up due Friday we might yet find out more.

Also, when I was up there today, the shed had not been fixed yet just made safe. I am unsure where the trucks are being held at the momment.

Some more pics from the Salvos and Sturt SES.

It might be worth giving the UFU a call and seeing if they are behind the calls or if there is another scam doing the rounds.

Does anyone know if the DVDs are available for purchase or if copies were/could be sent to the SES units that assisted?
