Hypotheticals / Responding Appliances
« on: October 28, 2006, 07:35:48 PM »
Here`s a question for you. You are the OIC of a CFS appliance heading to a house fire. You are told that there have been mulitple calls and you have an appliance from another station responding also. You have minimal crew and only 2 BA operators, the other appliance responding has only one BA operator. You get there to find that the house is quite high and your ladders wont reach the roof and the house is burning well.
After hearing all this would you request a big red truck (BRT) to back you up?? Rembering that the crew of that appliance will have a big ladder and a crew of BA operators and that the BRT is only 5-10 minutes away and closer than any other CFS resources.
If you say no, you wouldnt request it I would ask you why not?

SA Firefighter General / What is underneath your PBI?
« on: October 25, 2006, 09:25:13 PM »
Just wondering what CFS is saying you must wear under your PBI? We (MFS) have been told we have to wear a minimum of a t-shirt and long pants underneath the gear to preserve its integrity and protection. So why do we need long pants and not long sleeves? Personally I would think that the construction and fabrics of the PBI would be adequate to protect your body with nothing on underneath, apart from your underwear made out of natural fibres of course. Makes sense to obviouly not wear any polyester etc fabrics underneath.

SA Firefighter General / Food supplies
« on: October 15, 2006, 05:11:53 PM »
Article in the Volunteer magazine about the Salvation Army obtaining a Cool room trailer for catering at major incidents. Maybe the CFS would be generous enough to actually supply them with some food to put in it. LOL

Country Fire Service / BA`s
« on: September 09, 2006, 07:16:30 PM »
Reasonable size structure fire today at Port Macdonnel and extra BA resources had to cdome from the next group. As only 2 brigades in the Pt Mac group are BA equipped. These briagdes that responded from Gambier group had to virtually drive past closer stations to get there who werent responded as they werent BA. Do people think that all brigades should have BA and trained people or should it be a brigade choice on an as needs basis?

Incident Operations / fatality

Fatal caravan fire down south last night (Maslins Beach). Not sure of the circumstances only that it was a 5 year old lad, nasty business especially when kids are involved.

Country Fire Service / Refreshments at big jobs
« on: August 21, 2006, 09:17:55 AM »
What do people think of current arrangements for being fed at big jobs? Particularly scrub fires. What sort of rations do you carry on your appliances? I know the Salvos do s good job with limited resources but maybe they could do a better job if the CFS had a system of supplying them with some substantial food to disperse at these jobs.Any thoughts.

SA Firefighter General / Where do we draw the line
« on: July 22, 2006, 09:42:35 AM »
Interested to hear peoples opinion on what jobs SES/CFS should or shouldnt be attending. Like retrieving bogged vehicles and broken down cars. These are jobs for the RAA and tow trucks. Emergency services are for emergencies are they not? Not for people who dont want to spend money..
eg 191201 03:57:55 16-07-06 FLEX-A    ALPHA  1600  MFS: RESPOND To 16/07/06 03:54,BURRA SES,BURRA, MAP 0 A 0 ,,WOMAN, VEHICLE & TRAILER STRANDED 20KM OUT OF BURRA ON MORGAN RD. UNABLE TO GET TOW TRUCK TO ASSIST. CONTACT MFS COMMS,75129*CFSRES:

Country Fire Service / Turnout times
« on: July 09, 2006, 09:24:34 AM »
Some brigades set a benchmark time for appliances to go mobile in a cetain time from paged time. Does many brigades do this? When I was at Salisbury CFS they tried to get the first appliance mobile within 4 minutes of time of call. They monitored this over the course of the year for their own records. This would be difficult to achieve for many brigades due to travelling time of members to station.

Country Fire Service / CFS replacement appliances
« on: July 08, 2006, 03:59:59 PM »
Wonder if anyone has dont the math on how much it will cost to replace all of the CFS appliances that are going to celebrate their 20th birthdays and beyond over the next 4 years or so. The appliances that are being built now are replacing the last of the `home built` custom appliances that were made pre-standard days and the rear entry Hino trucks. But diring the late 80`s the CFA built a heap of the Hino appliances 24/34 some orders were up to 90 at a time. It is going to costbig money to replace all these and a special budget allocation will be needed. Maybe someone in their wisdom will just say bugger it make the limit 25 years. Some of the appliances wont last that long.

Country Fire Service / a bit harsh
« on: May 04, 2006, 06:19:32 PM »
1908981 08:15:50 04-05-06 FLEX-A    ALPHA  1600  FYI we default again because there was NO driver available, THANKS FOR THE PEOPLE THAT DID TURN UP !!! - SEAFORD STATION

Dont know about the rest of you but I think messages like this are a bit harsh. Obviously the brigade has issues with the number of drivers available. But you shouldnt bag the drivers you have that maybe couldnt make the call due to work/family committments etc.Too much being carried on the shoulders of the few drivers they have I think.

Country Fire Service / sub-standard?? service
« on: April 11, 2006, 10:05:56 PM »
Copied article from out friends at the UFU SA branch publication.-
The Union was pleased to note that following extensive lobbying from both the SAMFS and the UFU the Government recently purchased land at both Seaford and Aldinga which is earmarked as future SAMFS Fire Stations. The Union has always held the view that as all people now pay the Emergency Services Levy, they should be entitled to the provision of the best available emergency service response.

SAMFS / CFS/MFS training levels
« on: March 21, 2006, 01:32:38 PM »
Some people have been sprouting on this group that a CFS person with L3 and BA is more highly trained than MFS retained firies. Well I would have agreed with you about a year ago. I have been a CFS vollie for over 15 years and have now been an MFS retained Firefighter for 3 months so have seen both sides.Well I am not going to say that mets are better but their training and their levels are definitely of a similar standard. All MFS firefighters have to do BA and a Hose/Ladder course before they can even ride the appliances. Virtually everyone does RCR, most do HAZMAT, we do First Aid every year including advanced Resus (for oxy viva). Train weekly and have to learn pumps thouroughly before being appointed as a driver. These standards apply across the state.
