Fire Fighter Training / Re: Level 3 Training
« on: May 08, 2007, 12:25:38 PM »
From meetings that I've attended I've heard a few headline bits of information none of which gives the full picture. A snap shot of the information is that it going to contain a national unit on suppress rural urban fires and will be made up of a service level course as well. How correct this information is I do not know and I would only use it an an idea not something set in concrete. What bugs me is that we stop offering courses and have a large lag time before new course are introduced

Country Fire Service / Fire Talk & information flow
« on: April 22, 2007, 03:54:27 PM »
Having looked on the station notice board today I feel that the latest tit bit of information from the SA CFS in the form of the Fire Talk newsletter some what annoying. Being a rural brigade I some times feel that not all the information flows onto a Brigade. When I was recently at a CFS course other members of both higher lower ranks than me new more about some of the impending changes that the CFS have planed for types of membership and types of brigade. I have heard about cuts in training / changes in training and being a registered RTO with national accredited course to reverting back to the days prior to being an RTO. The question that I pose is where does one find out more information so that as a member and the rest of the Brigade don't have the feeling of being kept in the dark and knowing what is fact or fiction.

Country Fire Service / Re: Brigade Meetings
« on: April 11, 2007, 01:09:24 AM »
I've been running a monthly Brigade meeting but have found that to do things correctly I have to put up with a lack of quorum and that means having a management committee to facilitate decision making as my back up. I do find it perplexing that some members that I rarely see in the station can make comments on how a Brigade is run if they are not wanting to be a part of the Brigade nor attend anything but, just want to be members for the sake of __________ (well i really don't know why). If the SA CFS wants to progress it needs to explore and develop ways in which Brigade can move forward in ways that encourages those, who don't like change or Brigades that are mouse like quiet in participating and contributing to at least to group level discussions. Even though a quorum and Brigade meeting is a nice way to have a accountability it does not mean a professional culture is developed.  - rant now concluded!

Country Fire Service / Re: New Members & Training

I know that in my Brigade we are fortunate to have someone who is able to deliver BFF1 who when we have a new person to the Brigade we are able to start training them from night two after the induction. But the problem that we run into is the PPC and the pager when you got none to spare where do you go when your still waiting a year latter :?

Country Fire Service / Re: voting rights
« on: March 07, 2007, 09:40:27 PM »
At the last group meeting the their was occasion on changes to the SAFECOMM regulation to make members more accountable for voting i.e taking away the vote from those irregular (non) attenders. The problem is not who can vote in brigade but what are we voting for is more to the question. As what is popular and what is right is not always the same alternatively what makes the better leader than some beside being popular. as  the telephone directory say we are a "professionals protecting our communities"

Country Fire Service / Re: Needing more vollies

In some country areas the population moves from small towns to a larger town and even leaving the station still placed in an ideal location. It is shame that the future volunteers will have to come from a significant distance to ensure a responce.

As a remote brigade even though we have had an increase by five member and four cadets only two of these members live close by and the same with one of the cadets. The rest will be on a forty minute responce time. Maybe as an organisation we need to look at were our future members will come from so that we can maintain an effective fire cover through out the state.

This is my thoughts an opinion and does not represent any organisation or brigade

Country Fire Service / Re: The role of IMT
« on: January 16, 2007, 10:24:34 PM »
Having been apart of the strike teams now for a while and now playing a small role on IMT's. I feel that even though a fire will reach a level 3 as per the description in Op Guidelines 2006 those that have participated in AIIMS training and an AIIM's workshop will receive a page directly to find out if they are available for an IMT. With the IMT's that I have now been part of members have come from all over the state. I have not been a part of the actual sourcing of crews / teams for incident yet but at least we are sharing the workload rather than placing the burden on the shoulders of one Brigade alone.
