Country Fire Service / Re: Pagers
« on: December 19, 2009, 06:48:13 PM »
I don't want to sound like pauline whats her name, but can some one please explain how a few hundred pager will fix the problems so instead of sharing one pager between four we now share them between three.

I am also always personally amazed at how we can get good responce time in a rural brigade i.e. 18 minutes (nearest mets do it in 17 mins) using nothing more then SMS to get an entire crew on the road and rolling. The cost of the SMS is something that I do out of "donation to the Brigade" which is done with out any quarms. I wonder what would happen if we all had pagers.

By the way, what happened to the extra metro volunteers being trained within CFS for strike force deployments idea of 12 to 18 months ago ?

Well if I am into tin foil hats and bubble wrap jump suits then I would say that was a CFS cover up for something else they mucked up on

Yes you are right bajdas if the volunteer manager went out and hit the pavement then maybe some of the regional brigade / unit would be a bit healthier. Maybe if some of these manager also started using some volunteering best practice  then we could retain some of those we recruited.

I find it quite amusing that we have volunteers doing their best for volunteers and we have a highly structured organization that has no idea about how to manage volunteers. Maybe we are critter of our own self doing

So I take that their is no problems in a certain part of the state along if it is in 100 k's of the GPO!

Don't want to sound too sarcastic or negative but what about the rest of the state. I am always on the look out for new members for the Brigade so that the workload of is spread across many not just a few. It just not only the lookout for new members our equip coord has done a great job looking into better equipment to make life easier for members i.e. lighter tools easier carrying techniques. I was speaking to a an SES DUM the other day who said that he needed to have a break and that he will be taking it come hail or high water as he is burnt out. I know the feeling as my boss give me funny looks every time I get caught doing ESO stuff at work.

I wonder if the number of volunteers reflect the population growth in the state?

This begs the question why are volunteers leaving or becoming less active and what could we do to support the volunteers further so that we can retain a few more than we loose or recruit. What ever needs to happen can not be small brush strokes to the organisation but wide brush strokes that can be applied from the smallest and quietest brigade to the largest and most busiest brigade

Zippy I think that you may of got the wrong end of the stick as I sometimes type the same way that I talk (putting in incorrect punctuation in where it should not be).

It is not a matter of having different scales for different parts of the state but a matter of having different reactions for different parts of the state. I can understand that in the MLR or LEP that going on active stand by could be seen as logical pre incident planning step on the code red days but in the northeast pastoral do they need to be on active stand; I doubt it.

Terminology is one thing but in some of those fire ban areas the 100+ is all too common.

I don't think that active standby in stations is the go Zippy maybe having crew that is only five minutes away that can drop everything and be there in that five is more important. At least they will be comfortable either at home or at work rather than tense from anticipation

Country Fire Service / Re: New 14 appliances
« on: November 13, 2009, 05:55:40 PM »
The canter 14 needs to be designed with a decent stowage space and some extra space for those things that a Brigade would like to have. They look good in the Adelaide hills and with DEH on them but in some parts of SA they are not so practical. From the write not much has changed mechanically but it still by the look of the picture the same back end problems of having a too small tray space. May  the CFS needs to get creative in the design or consult with the brigade that they think should have one.

Recuiting is easy get them through the door, make them feel welcome and then the problem comes that of retaining them. This maybe not so much of problem for the urban brigades but for the typical bushfire brigade it can be a bit problematic. Service trinkets are fine but maybe we shouldbe investing in other ways that volunteers can be apprecated and rewarded. Some times the organization is at odds with what would make good volunteer practice.

Yes Darren I mean standard rural response. As SOP 2.1 et al does not give a standard size i.e. 14 or 24 or 34 etc. not even the 2000 version of the SFEC booklet provides that detail whereas it highly detail in other areas.

Yes numbers I can read the BFF1 Unit 2 where logical usage maintenance is covered not who is able to maintenance or where the lines are between being a brigade or group or region maintenance task.

Yes  I agree that the information is slow or in some cases I believe has been sanitized for some brigades so that a part truth id said not the full truth

At training the other night we told by some members who came from suppress wildfire and BFF1 that CFS is changes some of it practices.  Can some one please confirm or deny this information as either a bit of fanciful delight from a regional office; they are

1. deployments have an honorarium attached to them

2. the content of suppress wildfire contain practices that the CFS is planing to terminate and replace with new practices once approved

3. practices used in the BFF1 are now out of date and are unsafe but are being used till approval off new practices.

4. what is a standard rural appliance not stowage as those on BFF1 and suppress were told a 14 or QAV

5. does the CFS have any maintenance and repair policy (a personal hobby horse of mine)

Any form of clarification will be much appreciated

I have a dream that in 20 years time, no 40 years time that the town that I live in will once again be buzzing with industry, of being the next silicon valley and alternative energy centre for the state. Unfortunately I then woke up.

the scientific equation for government development is developments = dreamers + election nearing.

I to have a memory to crashndash yes I remember monarto and the MFP. I also reading in the local rag how BHP want to build a canal all the way from Pt Augusta to Roxby to get rid of the yellow cake what a dream and as dreams come they go just as silently. No it is more than just selling the blocks of land it is when they first turn soil to build the new town you begin planning

We  got given a chainsaw five years ago still yet to do a job with it. We even manged to fit it in the appliance with all the other approved, standard and why the heck not gear we have.

We don't have a nearby SES unit that do the trees for us as we have really good land holders that got rid of all those pesky trees for us.

So for common equipment would the four services ever go the same brand/type ?

If this is a road crash thing then I would say some one to worried about the hole in the dognut not the dognut itself.

Some station in the state or units are claiming third world conditions. A neighbouring unit to mine  has mottled collection of garages that makes  up the base where as the brigade I am from as the captain reported lat week at training that the wall that are breaking away have asbestos in them and historical some white ant damage. both organization share and combine to save costs when ever they can.

When SAFECOM or SES HQ or CFS HQ get into gear and recognise that sometime if you not on the same site does not mean you can't share costs or other resources it just means you need some creative solutions

Country Fire Service / Combining CFS Brigades / Units
« on: October 05, 2009, 09:21:46 AM »
After spending some time around home with family and friends we looked at some of the  brigades or units that we are members of and with a little bit of assistance from the promo website we found some like us where we are part of the two services i.e. SES and CFS.

The question posed is not designed for the lets amalgamate the two services thread that rears it head now and then.

Presently we have one piece of legislation that governs the services, one lot of VSO that are shared between the services and that where two the services cohabit the costs are shared.

But what is not shared or rather duplicated is that of administration, other papper work and training.

If we can share, combine and pool other resources why can't we do the same administration and training where eventhing seems to be duplicated as it it is part of some empire that each service wants.

In times where the cost of providing the services is difficult enough would any cost cutting that is sensible be worthwhile exploring. i.e  one Registered Training Organization as opposed to two one State Training Centre as opposed to two. One lot of asset auditing or financial returns. With the savings  we could always put it back into the services to support those that have given up so much and maybe attract some new ones

Your thoughts people

Come on Tillerman get with the program outside the metro area in those small rural communities the volunteer is rare species that is spread very thinly and sometimes toasted.

When you have a small pool of volunteers for three services you expect a bit of confusion if it assist SAAS with a pateint to be moved or assist the SES with a storm job.

Maybe out model of the service ain't working and  I don't care if the RO or RC catch being a mixed bag of lollies they will not say a word as I told them I will operate that way. Considering they put the blame on the other service anyway if it goes pear shape but will take credit when it is all good

Now were on the money change the regions.

If memory serves me right this may be a bit of a problems not for the volunteer for the paid staff members. Government boundaries have shifted already except for the CFS in Regions 2 and 4 where some staff might of been displaced. This has it own problems those that are displaced what do you do with.

Considering the liner between the services (SAAS, SES and CFS) is blurring rapidly for me maybe we should start thinking about a new services. This is no mater a case of through the baby out with the bathwater so to speak but a matter of improving the bathing of that baby.

I always go for the mix and match in fact depending on the incident it can be a bit on the handy side of things half orange half yellow. I reckon it is better look than causals and a tabbard that I have seen way to often from a service

Politics only creates the smoke screen that something would of or had happen all for reelection. The result is what we have now and instead  of art it is all in the eye of the beholder. If volunteers are meant to do then it will never happen were to busy complaining about the problems rather than looking for solutions and then making it happen

If memory serves me right we had a few minsters and leaders who have been members of an emergency service we are lead to believe or have lived in CFS area like

Brokenshirer
Brown
Olsen

and the list can go on beyond my blank memory or interesting pollies

Span of control form operation point of view yes it has been exceeded. If we have 1 GO but how many DGO will there be.

If we have a group of 12 with 3 DGO's then the ratio is 1:4. The sad but highly like fact that this is driven by the almighty $ not from an operation point of view. From an ops point of view this has worked quite well in some of the other regions that have groups of 10 or more brigades quite well for the last few years. Maybe the groups with five or less brigade are not the flavour of the month as they are to expensive to run.

Then perhaps your looking at "Selection not Election"

The fire emergency services regulations already pertain to to have a selection criteria for positions  based on what one has done. It is not a matter of what I think but a matter of can stomach by those focused at achieve the cooperate goals at the expense of the volunteer.

CFS Cadet Corner / Re: Cadet training with firefighters
« on: September 17, 2009, 07:45:25 PM »
We've kept it pretty simple come along and try for the first three months but be a regular attender. We train as one group as we can all share something but once you turn 16 you can consider becoming a fire fighter and once you are 18 you need to make up your mind.

What we insist upon is that all members in the 16 to 18 years write a letter of application to become a brigade fire fighter and get it cosigned with a care giver.

This seems to be working as we are sorting out the pretenders and real deals and it also makes the parents see that it a safe environment
