All Equipment discussion / Re: new level 3 gear (LION)
« on: August 03, 2005, 04:27:21 PM »
At the moment we take both sets to grass fires which is a pain, thats why i think we should at least be able to wear our pants all the time and either take two jackets or have a nomex work shirt which is basically a nomex jacket without a liner.

yeah uv is an issue, from speaking to the girls at lion the uv issue was more for m.f.s because they have glass roller doors and our gear should be fine. For info m.f.s hang their gear up inside out while off shift.

I'm with you firefrog.

I have been told even if you wear this gear to ash wednesday everyday for 10 years it will still be in good condition.
I wear it for everything except grass fires. I've heard it is being certified for level one gear without the liners in but i still can't see why they can't give us a nomex work shirt and if the fire gets a bit intense we can just throw our jacket on.
It's not as bigger deal as everyone makes it out to be, it's new gear to replace the old gear so just wear it. It is so expensive because it is so well made and will last along time.

Incident Operations / Re: station stats (O2 & SES/Rope Rescue)

By the sounds of this particular job maybe s.e.s should have been responded for backup, it can't hurt.

We had a job a few years ago that saas called us to help carry an injured patient out of a gorge, s.e.s went to the media because they thought it was thier job, so now we just respond them to everything and if they get a stop thats their bad luck.

C.F.S don't really have a standard, instead they have a contract for so many years with different manufacturers.

At the moment RIV gear is Holmatro (coming from chubb) which is what seaford recieved and heavy rescue gear is Lucas.

I would have to say holmatro has my vote.

The open and close mechanism actually requires a reasonable force to operate, it doesn't just move around whenever you move the tool so its not really an issue.

I have made a few dolls houses to use at our brigade, they are quite simple. apart from that its good to train on the branch and advancing techniques as often as possible ( is alot harder in pbi i have noticed).

Yes, i think that person is often defending a certain life saveing club too..
But seriously its a pitty this issue will come up forever wether we make comment or not, coz all a journo has to do is hear anyone say anything and they will right it down.
For example when the media hear us training on the scanner and they are straight on the phone to soc to find out why there are 500 people dead in a car accident/house fire/grass fire/flooding/hazmat at stirling c.f.s station.

There was a suggestion made not long ago that our brigade sends some of the original gear back (which is from 1998) to the supplier for inspection and repair. That way they can fix any loose stripeing, stitching and holes etc. May even be able to replace the stripeing with day night stripeing.

Yeah, it's funny how we are all struggling for day crew and some brigades are struggling for crew full stop yet we are missing out on the biggest recruiting drives ever. I don't know if there aren't enough people volunteering to do it but our brigade usually fills in a crew for one of the days easily.

Country Fire Service / Re: What's a pumper?
« on: August 02, 2005, 05:44:01 PM »
For boosting you want a volume stage to get alot of water in and alot of water out in a hurry. Thats why most pmpers eg: type 2's have 4 inlets and 4 outlets. Most larger premises boosters have four inlets and outlets, it's always a good idea to get a second water source to supply the truck from the street or a tanker etc.
A pumper stowage kit is different as well, most have a ppv fan, extra extinguishers, b class foam etc.

Well, now the safecom bill is being passed m.f.s and c.f.s come under the same OHS&W legislation, so either no-one wears them or we all wear them!
