Country Fire Service / CFS training night
« on: September 13, 2005, 04:27:49 PM »
I used to think that all brigades trained on the same night... It seems I was very wrong, but a lot of brigades still do train on a Monday, so I thought I'd start a poll to see.
(The results might get skewed a bit by two members of the same brigade voting, but at least we can get some idea..)

Fire Fighter Training / AIIMS course
« on: September 07, 2005, 01:06:09 PM »
Can anyone tell me what this course is about? What does it cover, and who should do it?
(I think there might be 2, an intro to AIIMS and a more in depth one?)

Country Fire Service / Experience markings
« on: September 03, 2005, 12:39:21 AM »
At a recent incident I went to, it became clear to me that a system for marking members' experience would be fantastic and possibly lifesaving.
When you are at an incident with another brigade, unless you do a lot of training with that brigade, its near impossible to tell how much people know, or how new they are...
I think the CFS should have a system of marking how long a member has been in the CFS. Whether we have the stars and chevrons on the helmets, or maybe a green strip around the helmet when the member is still in their first year.
this could save many mistakes made through assumptions that the other person knows what to do (How to re-commission a BA set, run a pump, even sink a standpipe :-o )
Any thoughts / suggestions / experience with this kind of set up?

SA Firefighter General / New Orleans Disaster
« on: September 02, 2005, 08:24:52 PM »
Just want to say that my (our?) thoughts go out to the Rescue workers in New Orleans Where it seems they are having a very tough time.
At the same time, do people think Adelaide would be able to handle something like this? The media hasn't really said much about how the rescue effort is being coordinated etc, so its hard to tell if its all turned to sh*t or the scale is just too massive to be effective... :|

Fire Fighter Training / Course Cancellation and SFEC's
« on: August 24, 2005, 03:49:42 PM »
I know of two courses that have been cancelled at STC in the last couple of months because of “lack of numbers” . (HAZMAT course at the end of June and CFB Course at the beginning of August)
My brigade has had a lot of trouble getting people on these courses because they are either so popular, or we are over out Standards of Fire and Emergency Cover (SFEC's).
If courses are getting cancelled because of lack of numbers, why don't they send a page out to training officers so people can people can come in at the last minute? (so long as pre-course assignments can be done).
I can understand that we need to get everyone trained, so brigades that have enough trained members shouldn't be filling spaces, but if the courses are being cancelled anyway, whats wrong with training more people? :?

Forum Suggestions / Training section

How about a training section where people can discuss training ideas and solutions as well as give tips and hints to people about to undertake training?

Country Fire Service / CB radio on trucks
« on: August 19, 2005, 04:45:57 PM »
Out of curiosity, do any of the rural brigades (or even more Urban brigades) use CB radio to talk to truckies on the way to an incident to try and find out more details, or an exact location?

Incident Operations / Friends / relations in an incident
« on: August 19, 2005, 04:39:02 PM »
I had my first incident which involved someone I knew last week. A firend I wen tot school with was in an MVA, luckily she wasn't hurt, and it was and easy incident, but it still shook me up a bit as I wasn't expecting it...

As a lot of accidents happen near home, I would imagine that CFS volunteers would be attending a lot of Incidents that involve friends and family. However as this is my first in 3 years or responding, maybe its not that common?

How many of you have been to an incident that involved a friend or family member, and how did you deal with it (on the scene and afterwards)?

Country Fire Service / Bushfire safety drive
« on: August 19, 2005, 04:27:12 PM »
Someone (non-CFS) mentioned an interesting idea to remind about and help prepare the public for Bushfires.
She suggested that we go around to all the shops in the district and get them to have a display for the bushfire season...

*So the Hardware store would sell packages with Rake, Garden hose, goggles, gloves, etc.
*Clothes store have a display of Cotton clothes with overalls, bandanna's etc,
*Book store / Newsagent sells copies of The bushfire book, or other related material,
*Chemists sell special "bushfire" first aid kits, with eye wash/gel, burns treatment etc.
*And anything else you can think of

I thought it was a good idea, as information session's put on by CFS or Bushfire blitz tend to get ignored, but if people are seeing an opportunity to prepare everywhere they go, it could help.
Do you think this would be a good / effective idea?  Should the CFS maybe look at organizing this statewide?

Other Government Agencies / What the SES does
« on: August 10, 2005, 06:07:06 PM »
There has been some interesting discussion in other threads http://www.safirefighter.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=53&topic=75 about what the SES does, and when the CFS uses them...
Some people expressed views that the CFS might be taking over some of the roles that the SES traditionally played, and not used them when they should.

So I'm interested in how other brigades use the SES... Do you respond them as back up, (eg traffic control), how close are you to them (eg, do you ever train together), and do you see a need for the SES to have more of a role?

Country Fire Service / What's a pumper?
« on: August 01, 2005, 03:15:45 PM »
A recent CFS media release about the new Ededn pumer said this:

The new appliance - an 'Isuzu FTR900' chassis - is one of three currently in South Australia. It carries 2,000 litres of water and has a rear mounted pump capable of distributing 3,000 litres per minute at 1,000kpa. It is primarily designed for structural firefighting and can assist in hydrant 'boosting' giving it the title of 'Pumper'.

Does this mean that "Pumper" simply means it can boost at a hydrant booster, and if so, does this mean that a non pumper should not be used to boost? Or are there other things that make a pumper a pumper?

SAMFS / 133 - Where is it from?
« on: June 20, 2005, 02:59:43 PM »
Hey! We currently have a replacement Mets truck while our pumper is being fixed... Its an old International Acco, and has the callsign "133". I can't find any reference to a Mets station number "13"...
Does anyone know where this truck may have originally come from?

Forum Suggestions / Words to add to the Dictionary
« on: May 28, 2005, 04:00:31 PM »
I just thought I'd start a thread where people can put words that need to be added to the spelling correction dictionary...
(I like to check my posts for spelling before I post, and it makes it much easier when words (or initials) like "CFS" don't come up as errors)
So heres a few to start off:
  • CFS
  • MFS
  • SES
  • SAPOL
  • NPWS
  • MVA
  • Scania

All Equipment discussion / Wet Weather Gear - Do you have it?
« on: May 26, 2005, 04:00:26 PM »
We've been trying to get wet weather gear for our brigade for the last 5 years, and have been having a lot of trouble. One of the main is that "It's not standard stowage".

Although I'm pretty sure we should have it by next winter, I'm wondering how many other brigades are having this same issue? Considering that the CFS attends a substantial number of MVA's, and that MVA's often occur when its raining, maybe we should look at changing what is "standard stowage"...

SA Firefighter General / SAFECOM
« on: May 26, 2005, 03:53:30 PM »
The SAFECOM Bill was introduced into parliament this week.
All I know about it is that it will be an joining of the CFS, MFS and SES.

Does anyone else know more details, like how they want it done?

And what do people think about this?  Will it be good for the CFS or bad?

SA Firefighter General / 'Contained' and 'Controlled'
« on: May 02, 2005, 01:22:14 PM »
As fire fighters, we all know the difference between contained and controlled fires.
However, I don't think the CFS has done enough to let the wider community know the difference. It seems to me, that when a fire is declared Contained, the public (or the media) seem to treat the fire as though it’s under control, and is nothing to worry about...
Apart from being dangerous for residents, I think its also damages the CFS's reputation, as when a fire jumps containment lines, it appears that we've lost control of it...
Should the CFS be doing more to highlight the difference? or is it a problem with the media?

Forum Suggestions / Problems logging in...
« on: April 27, 2005, 03:08:25 PM »
This may be fixed in Version 2, but just to let you know, I have a lot of problems logging in... I have no worries if I choose to stay logged in permanently, but if I’m on a public computer, I have to re-login every time I want to do anything that requires a registered user… Sometimes I’ll even have to log in twice, once to get the reply form, and then again to post the reply… Meaning I have to copy and paste my reply into the new form, once I have logged in again…)
Does anyone else have this problem?

Terrorism / What would you do?
« on: April 08, 2005, 03:11:45 AM »
Here's a question that I've been wondering, and it'd  be interesting  to hear your thoughts: :?:
There is a terrorist attack in Adelaide... It's possibly radiological.... Its big, and they need resources, so they respond half the states CFS brigades... If you went to help, you would most likely be exposed to some radiation... would you go?

Although I would want to do everything I could to help, I'm still young, and don't know if cancer would be fun... I'd probably try to find another way to help, away from ground zero... :(

Incident Operations / Shed fire cause
« on: March 25, 2005, 02:25:04 PM »
Hows this for a funny fire cause:
This guy was living in a shed, which he had done up into a bedroom (basically had TV and and stereo, bed and couch, plus a few bedroom extras...) 8)
He was trying to watch a DVD, but his dvd player wasn't working... so he grabs a can of some something (probably RJ-45, or WD-40) and starts to hit the DVD player... the can ruptures, and fills the room with a flammable mist... he turns the light on, and the room flashes over...
Ever thought that by trying to bash some sense into DVD player you might lose your shed?
(BTW, no injuries, and the shed was fully insured)

Country Fire Service / Operation Easter Brake
« on: March 25, 2005, 02:10:04 PM »
On thursday 24th March, The Stirling CFS took part in "Operation Easter Brake", a Road crash Rescue simulation that was put on for yr12 students from Heathfiled High school, Pembroke School, and Oakbank Area school...
It was basically a bad crash scenario - head on with drunk driver, Fatality and critically injured persons...
The excersise allows Students to see what happens in a crash, from the fist arriving Ambos, to Rescue and Fire trucks, Traffic Police, Major Crash, Rescue51 helicopter and intensive care paramedics....
I think its a good thing for students to what happens at a crash, but don't know if it will affect thier driving...
Do any other brigades do an excercise like this?

SA Firefighter General / Map of Mt Osmond Fire
« on: March 10, 2005, 10:37:32 AM »
I was looking at the map of the Wangary fire here: http://www.cfs.org.au/about/pdf/WangaryFire_13012005_media_topo.pdf
And I started wondering if anyone knows of a similar map of the mount osmond fire... It would be interesting to see the spread of brigades here, and compare it to over there...
I know we have many more resources close by here, but it would be nice to see it graphically...
Cheers

Country Fire Service / CFS as a paid service
« on: March 06, 2005, 02:45:44 PM »
Just out of curiosity.... The main spirit in the CFS is the volunteer spirit...
However, what if the government decided that it would start paying CFS volunteers (per call, for example)?  I've heard some people say that they would leave if the CFS was made a paid service, as they joined to volunteer...
Would you still be happy?  :?:  This is a just a hypothetical question... I want to know peoples thoughts...
:dontknow:
