Title: CFS Trailers
Post by: Darius on April 09, 2007, 08:59:01 AM
PS If anyone wants to check the info about their brigade on the Promo website at www.fire-brigade.asn.au  and update anything, no matter how minor, please do!!

I am particularly keen to capture data about brigade trailers & what they carry.  <end shameless promotion>

bridgewater have a trailer, never seen/heard of it used though.
(will see what I can find out for you)

Bridgewater's trailer I'm told was mainly used when they had a team in the competitions.  It just sits in Car 2 bay now, but who knows it is still in good condition and may find a use one day.

I am looking to record all CFS vehicles (past & present) - including trailers.

It doesn't matter what they carry / what they are used for - I just want to know!!

The reason is two fold.

One is so I can accurately record what resources brigades have available - so I am seeking trailer make, registration number, and what is carried on the trailer.

The other reason is I am working on a history project - looking at any vehicle that CFS / EFS have ever had......so I am looking for the current AND previous trailers (and any other vehicles).

Again, I am looking for make / model of vehicle, year of manufacture of chassis, fuel type, builder of the appliance, callsign (and many of vehicles had more than 1), drive type, fuel type, amount of water carried, type of pump / pump motor, pump capacity, pump fuel, water capacity, date arrived at brigade (month & year if possible - although even a year is helpful!) and if the appliance wasn't a new one, what brigade it came from, and where it went to, once it left the brigade.

I am also seeking photos of any of these vehicles!!

So far, I am up to around 3600 vehicles, but I know I am missing many appliances, particularly trailers, and appliances belonging to brigades that are no longer in existence.

If anyone wants to check the appliances I have listed for a particular brigade, let me know, and I'll send you what I have.

I hope that all this data will be up on the web for everyone to look at...

That would have been rego YAO180, but now changed to TQP103 (when the whole of Region 2 swapped to Government Plates... which makes life more interestting trying to capture all the new plates)

Is it still at Tanunda - now that they have moved to a new station, which presumably has it's own loos.......?!

Onkaparinga group now have Oakbank/Balhannah Trailer, up at Woodside station with a Floating Collar Dam.

and a honking great monitor on it too.

Do bridgewater carry their floatable pump on that trailer? Im pretty sure when i saw it last it had a few lengths of hard suction line it too.

AFAIK Ardrossans trailer is a Regional compressor trailer to service the Yorke Peninsula

Southern Yorke Group have a trailer for a portable dam plus a strike team trailer. Strike team trailer is towed behind a command car, thus keeping crews personal belongings safe and off of appliances.

Hmm, what a top idea, get a trailer that allows us to fill cylinders at a job, next to all the smoke that BA is supposed to protect us from   :-P  :-D

Er, ok...then replace the word 'smoke' with 'hiddeously toxic substance requiring the use of extra PPE' .....???  :?

Yes please, I'd like some air with my monochloroethylene diphalate, ta

C2H3Cl

Don't the two white cylinders lying down in the trailer have fresh compressed air free from any monochloroethylene diphalate contamination?  (Ignoring the obvious "they wouldn't do that responses" :P)

Ah, thanks CFS_Firey for injecting some logic and useful information into the discussion  :-D - so the only air used to refill cylinders is in the banks on the trailer, and said banks are not topped up during the job. Is that right?

One would hope the trailer was upwind and well away from the incident anyway.
Title: Re: CFS Trailers
Post by: uniden on July 09, 2007, 06:31:56 PM
You need 3 phase power to run the compressor to fill the banks, which isnt usually available on the fire ground.

Kalangadoo has a quick fill pump trailer although we havent gotten around to changing the radio inside the control box as were undecided as to wether were gonna have a UHF or VHF radio

Before anyone asks what has a radio got to do with a pump being worked i'll explain.... when the Kalangadoo CFS pump trailer was designed the main aim was to provide brigades with a pump that could be placed at any static water supply during a major rural fire so they had somewhere to fill up

Thats where the idea of having a pump trailer that could be activated keying in a special code using the truck VHF radio microphone which then would be recieved by the pump trailer receiver if keyed in properly would turn on the pump automatically

In the event of mopping up during night time the pump trailer was also added with a green beacon and flood lights so if brigades were to fill up in the dark they would know the location of the pump trailer/water supply cause once the pump trailer is activated the green beacon and spot lights would turn on along with the pump  :-)

Why do i know about this you ask :-D well because my father was the brains behind this brigade project

Do CFS stations & thus potential staging areas to a larger scale incident, have 3 phase power to possibly use the facility ?

I'd say it depends on the station - many of the old sirens (and possibly the new ones too) run on 3-phase power, so those stations have 3 phase power...  (although they might not have sockets...)

I believe there is at least one Group around who has the BA Compressor, and a trailer with a generator capable of running the Compressor......

Yankalilla CFS and the Southern Fleurieu Group has a 3 Phase generator in a Trailer (Ex Moomba) 6 Cyl Diesel Engine run's the gen set. Purchased prior to 1999-2000 NYE excitement.  It can probably run half of the town as well as the all the Station!

Region Seve... I mean, Sturt Group also have a pump trailer stored up at Cherry Gdns. A Godiva pump with a VW donk.  Has been used in anger, most recently I think at the airstrip to augment the fixed pumps for Mt Bold fire bombing ops. (don't quote me on that).  They also used to have a trailer behind a Landy Defender for the air support setup. Might be a few other air support trailers left around the place. IIRC there's a photo of one in "Tried by Fire".
