Title: What do you carry in your PPC?
Post by: 2090 on November 08, 2006, 04:14:14 PM
So what do you carry with you? I carry a Leatherman multitool, a brigade issue Super SabreLite, a pair of Nitrile gloves for RCR, wildfire glove and structural gloves, and finally a flash hood. In my Wildfire PPC I have goggles and smokerag as well.

I have a little pack i take with me it has

Nirile gloves
Kevlar gloves
Those green rural gloves
Safety glasses
Goggles
Bandages/first aid stuff
Food pack
Pen/pad
UA torch
Smoke mask
Rescue Knife, brigade issued to RCR crew (pacific cutlery brand)
Sunscreen
Digital camera

Thank god i've got a small bag

On the topic of those knives don't buy them they are SHITE. The seatbelt cutter doesn't work, the glass hammer part is too blunt and only flattens of when you try to break a window (even as hard as you can still won't break a window), and the blade itself doesn't have a sharp point so it can't penetrate window seals etc.

gloves
nitrile gloves (x2 pairs)
dust mask
goggles
rescue knife; blade, glass hammer, seat belt cutter in one (eikorn sp?)
CPR face shield
notebook/pencil
matches
ear plugs
one of the old bandages they stopped making that has a pad built into it...

fair bit of crap really... useful though, and all of it has been used at one time or other

surgial gloves, mmmm did you know that once gloves have been in contact with foam/water they should be replaced its been proven that foam will eat away slowly at the rubber that is in the gloves...

I have a few of the items mentioned above, but where do you guys and girls keep all of the stuff. How big are your pockets??
Title: Re: What do you carry in your PPC?

hmm...

CFS notepad (the one with numbered pages) and pen
Gloves - still waiting for some decent structural ones.
Duct tape
Pelican mini-light (helmet mounted)
Bandanna (much more stylish than the triangular bandage) ;)

Any nitrile/latex gloves are once use only... as soon as you put them on the oils from your skin start to degrade the material (nitrile is a lot more resistant though). I did carry some, but we put boxes on all the trucks - so just grab them when needed now.

Actually those rescue knives are great for fishing

I have both an Eickhorn Solingen PRT-1 and PRT-3. - Havent had any problems and they have come in handy on a number of occasions !

(Regular sharpening and maintenance is the key.. - The seatbelt blades can be replaced, mine cuts fine ;) )

Different brand though ours are pacific we got them on monday night and were doing road crash tarining and they were useless. Will have to talk to our group admin who got them and get him to return them  for the brand you have?? Do you know the price? i believe the Pacifics were around $50.

For memory the Eickhorn knives are $90 - $100.....
very nice knives...  not sure what model is what, but the red handled ones are ment to be best for road crash (blade shape differs)
Title: Re: What do you carry in your PPC?
Post by: Alan (Big Al) on November 09, 2006, 09:09:16 AM
The blade is great it's curved serrated and sharp but it's a bult tip if it was a pointy tip it would be much better.

Post by: Smallflame on November 09, 2006, 10:05:02 AM
FRESH Nitrile Gloves
Smoke Rag
Goggles
Pencil & Pad
Eikhorn Rescue Knife
Wildfire Gloves
Couple of Barley Sugars

Only have Level 1 PPE at this point, so flash hood and the like would be fairly pointless

If you scroll down, you will see the different editions of knifes.

I have the PRT-1 and 3. - They are both fantastic, and I have found all of their knifes to be of top quality.

(Not saying others aren't)

(The PRT-2 is meant to be able to cut class with the blade of the knife, hence why many rate them highly as rescue knifes.. My opinion differs when it comes to actually cutting through glass or laminate with them, but every one has their own opinion.)

There are suppliers of them in this state, not sure how it works being able to give details ? - but yes, I do know where you can get them, most fire equipment companies can source them.

I got both of mine for around the $110-$120 mark each, with pouches.

What PPC do you have? I must admit the old Nomex gear, crica 1999 isnt the best for carrying gear, but still: Level 1: Gloves in overtrouser pocket, goggles/smoke mask in left tunic pocket, small hat in right tunic pocket. (oops, yes I carry a hat too). Level 3 gear: Wildfire Gloves in left over trouser pocket, Multitool clipped to right overtrouser pocket, structure gloves in right tunic pocket, Nitriles in left tunic pocket, flashhood on boots so it always goes on first.

handkerchief

Medevac: Have you ever tried getting your knife out while wearing BA? Put it somewhere that it isn't fouled by straps or the like, and somewhere you can reach it with a single hand. You never know when youre going to need it. The upper left arm pocket on the PBI is a pretty good location and mine hovers between there and my left leg pocket.

all well and good if you have PBI there mate (and yes, i am a BA operator)

on the braces has never posed an issue for me yet, so lets just hope i dont need it while im in BA

Are you the SES encylcopedia or is that ammount of stuff common amongst the SES? :-o
Title: Re: What do you carry in your PPC?

I am just paranoid

Also, I can be up to a 30 minute walk from a SES vehicle on a Land Search. This happens when on patrol at Clipsal500 V8 race or Showgrounds.

So I want enough gear for myself to be comfortable in the bush and not inhibit the team if a problem occurs.

does anyone else use those P2 dust masks with the exhalation valves? Our brigade has them and i am never using them again. In order for the valve 2 work effectively you have to actually put your mouth around the valve. and those masks get very soggy. im back on the trusty bandanna

With all these personal items we carry, what do you carry them in? My Brigade is looking at some bum bag style bags for personal items like phones, medication, leatherman, dust mask, nitrile gloves etc. Can anyone recommend a nice size durable bag? I have seen one with a reflective stripe stitched to it but not sure of the brand.

Hey ElectricEliminator,
If you want particulate protection in fire situations then a form of P2 mask is recommended - bandanas etc offer absolutely no respiratory protection whatsoever. If fact have been as providing a false sense of security.

But you make a very valid point about the P2 mask - they need to be fitted correctly and changed frequently to be effective..

Cheers
