OFF Topic / Re: What the?
« on: October 10, 2006, 06:45:27 PM »
Where's PF (Federer) and Toast gone?
And what happened to the first post in the Hellraisers thread? it appears as though medevac was responding to someone.
Can anyone spill the goss on this?   :-D

I think they left from the pressure they were receiving from certain parties within SAFF. Like constant comments disagreeing with their posts and putting them down and criticizing them.

I know E left for this reason. likelihood that PF did as well.
toast is in sydney trying out for the Sydney Met fire service, so whether he left SAFF because of that im not sure.

but I know this. These 3 people have had a lot to say granted, but at least they're getting their gripes and ideas out in the open. Take note all 3 of these members were fairly young. maybe some on here should learn to respect opinions, no matter how old the brain is it is coming from.

Im not having a go at everyone, just getting this thought out there.

on another note, i am definitely staying around. good luck getting rid of me. :-D

end rant

Perhaps some professionalism from all posters was what required....several people  (and I am not referring specifically to those mentioned above) posted large amounts of dribble, abused other posters for their views, would not accept (at least in their postings) that someone else could have a different point of view to their own - and including ridiculing individuals (both those on the forum, and those who were spoken about on the forum, who did not have the opportunity to defend themselves.)

I am all for people having their say - I don't care how old / young or how long a person has been in the CFS - they all should have opportunity to SAY something, and to ask questions - but not to dribble on and abuse others, as has been occurring regularly on this forum.     :x

So, if people have something to say / ask, then I say go for it.  If you are going to dribble, then shut your mouth, and keep your fingers away from the keyboard.....!    :-)

If it went to an independent centre, each service will still maintain its own Comms - after all, the SACAD system is about call receipt & dispatch, not what happens once the individual services get on the road.......

So, presumably, current staff will not be loosing their jobs....

I don't think they have even let the contract yet.....!

Just guessing we will have similar planes to last year - if what CFS hired for last Wednesday is anything to go by....

Yes it is a juvy facility, but the suspect was an adult, serving time for juvenile offences.....

It is a bit of an anomaly in the Justice system (and certainly not unheard of)

But I doubt he will go back to Magill.......

But in relation to the alleged offences arising from today, he will be dealt with as an adult....

That would probably be for Glynde MFS, they dont have a choice on what to role too.

Athelstone CFS got called also - thats who I was refering to, and they had issues getting crew, and then got stopped called

Be careful about commenting on the situation, based soley on what you see on the pager.

I think you might find the Stop call was not a "don't bother coming, it's all over " but "the incident is over, and we can be released"

Athelstone 34P was in attendance at this call.....

Errr hello...TOTAL FIRE BAN

There were two permits that could be issued - a schedule 9 & a schedule 10.  Schedule 10 was issued for a fire on a fire ban day.
Schedule 9 was for a fire during the fire dangerr season, (but not a fire ban)

Might have been given different numbers under the new Act..... ?    :?

Plain or blue plate makes no difference to who owns it.....

My brigade fundraised for a 14, and along with some council funds, purchased it....twenty years later, it was replaced wiht a new $160,000 14, and the old one left...currently being used by CFS Tech services before being sold off at Government Auction....  :|

Almost all CFS vehicles are owned by the CFS, with the odd exception.....

Most of the Grants out there see each individual CFS brigade as a seperate entity - so you could find that you are competing against other CFS brigades for the same Grant...and more than one may be given a grant.....   :-)

Country Fire Service / Re: Volunteers picking and choosing calls

I personally think that training and call attendance should be policed more harshly. If people don't make it to at least one training in a month without a good reason, they shouldn't be allowed on the appliance for calls, or have themselves pushed down the list for courses. After all, whats the point in wasting the training if the people aren't going to turn up?

It can be policed as harshly, or otherwise, as your brigade chooses to - if people in the brigade have an issue with it, then they should talk to the Captain.

The old CFS Act (and I guess the new SAFECOM Act - I haven't had a close look at it) - states that members need to attend 12 meeting a year to remain current.  I suspect if that was strictly adhered to, then many people shouldn't be members of the brigade......but should we kick out lots of people on that basis...?  If we did, I suspect many CFS brigades would cease to exist.....     :-(

Country Fire Service / Re: CFS NEEDING MORE APPLIANCE'S
« on: October 03, 2006, 06:06:21 PM »
No we dont. But check if the other brigades second and third appliances are CFS or Brigade owned.

Do brigade-owned appliances still exist?

My understanding is that there are no brigade owned vehicles anymore - everything is owned by CFS (even the appliances that were funded by Local councils, are now owned by CFS).

And because CFS owns them, they pay for the maintenance / services / repairs for them as well. (Although depending on what goes wrong etc, how much to fix, the funds come from Region, or Group - but an individual brigade doesn't have to pay...)

Another issue alluded to by a number of people, is your level of risk.

Appliances are not allocated on the basis of how many people you have in your brigade, or even within the district you cover, or necessarily how many calls you get.  Appliances are allocated on the basis of what risks exist within your area.

For example, Roseworthy CFS got two new appliances within less than 2 years.   That wasn't because they had a special deal CFS - it was because a brand new Industrial development went ahead in their response area, a multi million dollar development, that needed an upgraded fire response to it.

There are many other brigades around the state who have had appliances upgraded, or downgraded, depending upon the RISK in their area, not the actual number of calls that the brigade responds to.

And yellow-2, if your brigade is lucky enough to have more people turning up for the call, than you have space on the appliance - first thing is be thankful.  The second thing, is if the same people are getting on the appliance each time, and the same ones always miss out, then introduce a roster, so responses can be shared around.   :-)

There are a number of brigades around that run a roster system - Barker, Kadina & Waikerie to name a few......

Throughout this discussion, only a few have mentioned that fact that we are volunteers.  Most of us have a life outside CFS - jobs, family, social life (how many people have been out at a social function, had a few drinks, and then the pager has gone off...)

If you don't get enough crew turning up to the less exciting calls, then the brigade as a whole needs to look at how to address that problem.

My own brigade has a core group of people who will turn up to almost every call - regardless of time of day (or night).

One day, one of those people, with her husband (who is also a member), drove past the station, just as the rest of the crew turned up for a call.

The couple didn't stop, because they were on the way to a ceremony for the member to be awarded her PhD.

Based on what many have said on this forum, both should have stopped, and responded to the call, and ignored a very important event in their lives......

Camo, you hit the nail on the head.  We are Volunteers, we can chose when to respond, and when we don't.

Certainly, within my own brigade, those who turn up to calls and training on a regular basis are the first ones to be considered for strike teams, and for many of the training courses - so there are advantages to coming along at all hours.....

« on: September 29, 2006, 02:11:43 PM »

If members don't get the first page then FIX THE PAGING SYSTEM.

How do  * we * as CFS fix the paging system?

I have one road in the district, which has eight members living on it.   On any given call, less than half will get the first pager message.    (Hence, we use our siren regularly. )

We have submitted the relevant phone calls / reports etc via the GRN helpdesk, but the eventual answer is "The provider is meeting the contractual obligations"

So, we just end up wearing the problem.  Other brigades in my area are worse of then my brigade, in terms of GRN pager coverage.

Long live the siren!!!

« on: September 29, 2006, 12:16:35 PM »
I know of some brigades which used their "More crew required" button as an indication that someone is a the station (perhaps they need to get their decoder buttons reprogrammed!)

I am also aware of a number of people, in different brigades, who often don't get the initial message, but for some reason get the next one (which is often the "more crew required button" )

So, for some brigades, that message is not necessarily an indication of lack of crew.

Who is better to deal with? the investigators because we washed their evidence away or the hotel manager who now doesn't have a building because we had to use restraint to protect evidence?

I figure neither of them want the building drowned......

How many people reading this hypothetical have had the training on preservation of fire scenes (both bush fire & building) ?

I would hope EVERYONE has some basic knowledge of preservation of evidence.

If not, I might have to take to carrying my gun the scenes...as I said, fire investigators get very grumpy when firies destroy the evidence - especially evidence that can identify who lit it!!!  (As I have witnessed first hand...)

Missed the bit about roof fire...in that case, if it had already broken through the roof by the time crews arrived, do NOT drown the whole thing with water - you will potentially destroy the evidence of the accelerant used to start it......   :-o

Fire investigators get really annoyed when firies destroy their evidence... :-(

Is the fire going well inside the building, or is it confined to one floor or one room....?   If still contained within an area, surely attack using Compartment Fire fighting techniques would be better.  I don't think the new owners would be too impressed that their new acquisition has
$200,000 fire damage, and $300,000 smoke & water damage.....

While not that familiar with the fire fighting resources based at Mt Lofty House, I would imagine that it has a large water, storage tank somewhere....it may even have an internal sprinkler system, or hydrant system.......can anyone clarify if that is the case, or otherwise....?

And remember - the state's firefighting resources do not end at Mt Lofty Group..   :-D

There were probably three CFS brigades who were closer to the tree fire, than Lincoln MFS....

On a slightly different topics, firefighter kiki mentions that working with the MFS wasn't so bad, the two services worked together well etc etc...that is good to hear...it is a pity that so many on this forum publicly bag both the MFS and SES, without having ever worked with them.

While in every service, (CFS included) you will always find a few people who are a pain to work with (or impossible to work with) however the bulk of people are good to work with.

MFS & SES members, and perhaps even members of the public / interstate services reading through this forum must wonder about the relationship between CFS and other service - I am sure the perception amongst many, from reading this forum, is that CFS as a whole hates MFS and SES, and that MFS & SES are just a bunch of arrogant idiots, according to CFS.

This of course is far from the truth - but when anyone challenges the negative comments about other services, the standard answer from those posting the comments is "we were only joking"

CFS has tried hard in recent times to show ourselves as a professional service, with members who behave in a professional manner.  Publicly bagging other services is definately not professional.

Obviously there are genuine issues that arise between the services - delays in responding relevant services is one of those, - which can be discussed, without the discussion ending up as a bag MFS session.

Perhaps a little professionalism from some posters could be quite helpful, rather than the dribble that has been coming out lately.

Blinky, water bombers are only automatically responded to rural jobs...

*(Wasn't sure if you were being sarcastic so thought I'd better clear it up)

How did the call originate...if it came as a fixed alarm (which seems to happen regularly) then bombers wouldn't be dispatched.

BUT perhaps smoke from the fire has been spotted from the Mt Lofty Tower, or a keen eyed CFS member driving through the Piccadilly valley spotted smoke, and reported it as such.  Then the bombers would be on auto dispatch...... so Blinky's suggestion is not as silly as you make it out to be...

Besides, the place has just been sold, so it will probably be in refurb mode, and no guests to be seen!!

Joy oh joy - an early fire season!

The differance to us - sweet F/A, bugga all and none!

Doesn't your brigade undertake any hazard reduction burns?  It will make a difference in many areas, mine included, where we have been planning some burn offs.  With the restrictions coming in early, it means more running around to get permits, plans etc.

In my area right now, the conditions are pretty right for burn offs - other than the wind which comes up at various times.     An early season in my area will mean some people won't get their burns done (either ones done by CFS, or by the land holder)...and a bucket load more work for the Captain, in checking proposed burns, when people apply for a permit (assuming that permits will be issued!!)  The other problem that may arise is that people try to get their burn offs done earlier, due to an early start to the season - and end up lighting up on a day which they perhaps shouldn't.....then we get the call.....

To put the season in a bit of a perspective, in my area in the last 3 weeks, we have had 35 mm of rain. While many areas of the state are in desperate need of rain (and very dry, and perhaps not safe for anyone to burn), a small area is not in the same boat so to speak.

Having said that, having a uniform fire season, will take the confusion out of fire restrictions for this year!  :-)
