i will agree with you numbers.

I have been recently elected to the position of captain at my brigade.  I probaly have less experience then then a lot of the urban fringe white hats.

Unfortunately there has been a stagnant in my brigade over the years and the position basically fell into my lap.  Having said that i am more than capable of taking on the position.

I thought it was up to brigades to decide who they wanted as members and who they wanted to vote in as new members after probation. Should not be up to the group at all usually.

It is up to the brigade but the group can make it very hard for the brigade if they dont like the members.

People need to take this job that we do seriously. Yes its voluntary, but its still and emergency service. Be it SES or CFS.

I agree numbers but there needs to be a healthy median.  As stated before people wont want to join if there is too much involved before they get on the trucks....the CFS doesnt have the appeal that the MFS has.

Yes that is a group issue not a brigade issue.  We had it out with the group at our last meeting about that.

If that member chooses to reapply then i would imagine he will be invited to stay due to the changing demographic of our brigade but unfortunately the group will make it hard for that member and our brigade.

But this thread isnt about my brigade.  Its about recruitment within the CFS as a whole.

Cam,my info came from two people who where there so if they got it wrong well that is their mistake.....so will wait and see when its up and running....They did tell those there why it take's SAAS so long to page a fire service and if that is correct then thats crap....

Basically they wont page anyone else until they have finished their questionaire they have to ask, which can take between 5 and 15 mins apparently.

So if you want a timely response call the police or fire first because there is less of a delay getting all services there instead of just one!

As far as the CAD info goes i might of been asleep but i dont remember hearing any timelines mentioned, unless they spoke to someone after the meeting.  One thing mentioned was the fact that SAAS & SAPOL? will come online with CAD first before the fire services are brought in.

Also there was something mentioned about an application for funding for MCT's for all CFS appliances.  Would be good if that gets funded but i wouldnt be holding my breath.

There was a meeting down here during the week and those that where there( I was not) where informned its still 3 year's away fully and that is if it gets of the grounds as there are still issue's....

Not sure where you got that info bill?  I was at that meeting and no dates were mentioned as to the completion or start.   The only info we were given about some sort of start was the first contracts were going to be signed in September i believe.

According to the last budget their was a completion date of 2011.

Cant see it happening as its too hard now to get new members out in the country, who ever came up with this crap must have nothing else to do at his or her desk job.....I agree 100% with cam.....

Would work in a community culture that Brigade Membership is something to aspire to, &
"Fire-Fighter" someone to be respected for what & who they are.  Such a culture is
foreign to most Australian towns I think.  Possibly because brigades have lowered the fire-fighter bar to one which carries no particular respect ?  Could such a culture be
created ?   I think it could be done in 10-20 years in townships.  Maybe.  Will be a
brave management committee that starts down that road - training starts with a run
around the block & exercises, just like the footy club up the road...

For those in areas where fire is just another part of their normal job (most farming
areas?), it will never happen.  On the other hand, most farmers I know would have no
trouble at all meeting any -reasonable- fitness standard. Or any other reasonable
competence standard.

cheers

Respect? Never heard of it....doesnt exist!

Not just for the firefighter but in general!

i would be happy to see a better fitness standard in the cfs but with that it creates a problem.

its hard enough to get more vollies....are they gonna be bothered if they have to go through a fitness test?

on the other hand it will weed out the dedicated from the time wasters

Gday,

What recruitment strategies have brigades used in the past that have worked well?

Or what strategies should the CFS use in the future?

Also is there funding available to brigades to help with recruitment?

Gday,

What do you see happening in the CFS in the future as far as the structure goes?

What would people think if we were to remove groups from the CFS?  good idea or a bad idea?

Each brigade receives funding they require rather than groups dishing the money out to brigades.

Our 14 year old 24 has done 42,000 kms.....although at least half of that has been done at training & sunday morning truck runs.

I guess the money Burnside put in could of come from an account outside of the CFS, which therefore doesnt make it CFS money, but in the age of no trucks are owned by the brigades i guess the CFS can step in and take what they want?

But i agree if the CFS decide to move the truck the Burnside brigade should be reimbursed for the money they put in.  Its only fair.
