SAMFS / Re: Fire Charges

The reason the Fire Service does not charge for actual emergencies no matter how stupid is because if they did it may stop people calling in the event of an emergency, therefore causing more damage etc.

as i have said before.  if your using 38mm or smaller then volume of water isnt an issue.  a bit of restrictiveness is not going to kill you!

no last year everyone forgot and there was a group field day on the sunday!  So just making sure everyone is aware.

Also given the confusion around daylight savings this year it pays to be on the ball.

All Equipment discussion / Re: PBI, What incidents do YOU wear it to?
« on: October 04, 2008, 07:01:23 PM »
Till CFS make it clear what you can wear it to each group with in CFS will do what they think is best for the up keep of the PBI gear due to the cost of replacing it. I would like to know who will replace it if we miss use the gear by wearing it to rural jobs or if we take it out in the sun for long periods....

Sun for long periods of time?  How long do you think you will be at the job?

The UV effect on PBI or any material for that matter is over a long period of time.  being out in the sun for a couple of hours every now and then isnt going to kill it!

Unfortunately until CFS actually releases an official policy our group is structure and alarms only (i think they would prefer it if we didnt wear them to alarms!  :-o ) But yes anything other than rural would be my thoughts.

And as for structure helmets - i wear mine to everything (another thing my group is trying to stop, along with the the issuing of yellow structure helmets  :-o ), as has been said, that little bushwacker aint going to stop much.  I proved this when i was a cadet - bowled a hose and somehow the couplings managed to get free and tackle my head, needless to say the helmet was a bit religious after that.

Bill

have a think about what you have said. as if the CFS would give you a new appliance for winning a simple competition. Trucks where expensive to build last time i checked.

I realise sarcasm can be hard to read but even i saw that one!

Country Fire Service / Re: pbi gold
« on: October 03, 2008, 05:17:38 AM »
PBI Gold is the best gear we have ever had, yes it can be hot to wear on occasions. if this is the case at every oppurtunity take off the jacket or at least open it up.
It should also be a size bigger than what you would normally think to wear, this allows for air flow. help with heat build up.

PBI also has a limited vapour barrier, Nomex does not. some HAZMAT protection.

As to wearing it, it ain't that hard, use the thumb loops, keeps the sleeves down, ensure the neck nap is up and velco attached. if you got the right size then the legs shouldn't be a problem.

if you get too hot in a structure fire, maybe you have added too much water (steam logged your gear) or is the fire beyond internal attack.

Look here newbie!

You cant come in and start throwing all this logical stuff around, you will confuse alot of people!

Shame on you!

Basically though, our group has decided its too expensive to wear so unless its a structure or an alarm you cant wear it.  Hell they were trying to tell me its safe to go in with level 1 and CABA!

OMGWTF, may i borrow your head vs wall animation?  :x

Bit hard to do a running grass fire up steep hills! lol

The hills brigades should have the option of an extra locker but then that creates another issue.  What extra gear would those brigades get?  Where would the extra funding come from?  What gear do the hills brigades require that us flat land brigades dont require?

im pretty sure it will be run from the current mfs com cen.

The way it "should" be setup it wont matter if the person is dumb or a computer genius the outcome will be the same as long as the caller gives the correct info.

Country Fire Service / Re: Grass fires from the crew deck

See photo below.

Used in flat areas, where grass fires can travel very quickly.  The first truck will go as fast as is safely possible to knock down the flank whilst the following trucks will be making sure there is nothing left alight, and the last truck should be off the truck making sure everything is completely blacked out.  Sometimes depending on the fire size there maybe 5 trucks in a line chasing the flank.  Theory being by the time the last truck comes past there will be nothing left alight.  Once the first truck is empty it pulls away and each truck takes a step up.  Its the most efficient way to round up a fire when the flank can be km's long.

Front hose knocks down the flame, taking the heat away.  The second hose, set to a powercone/fog takes out the flame completely (where possible) 1/2 on the black stuff 1/2 on the unburnt.

Any questions?

think the new 34 has two lines but also 2 uprights for the deck monitor.  With a bit of engineering its easy to run a hose off the top of the upright.

Throw the Stop/Go Batts away and provide simple training in the proper use of Maglights and lanterns.

Forget the Burnover curtain on the crew deck as youll generally have the time to get into the SAFER crew cab.

single 90m hosereel hoisted above pump.

Removable Hose Winders...no more of this rolling up by hand business.

Maglites dont work too well in the daylight.

Big risk removing rear burnover curtain...

Single hosereel?  definately need two

removable hosewinders?  SOFT!  hahaha

2 deck lines is enough....just means you have to take the hose with you if you need to swap sides.  Deck is big enough...if you cant fit maybe its time to consult a gym! lol

No deck is fine for the hills dwellers but that doesnt suit us out in the sticks.  Maybe its time they looked at the design of the trucks again.
