Country Fire Service / call signs
« on: March 26, 2007, 07:31:24 PM »
What is the deal with CFS call signs lately. Some brigades have pumpers with rescue gear on them but they use the call sign Rescue. Others have the same type of appliance with rescue gear but use the call sign Pumper,24P etc. The thing is if you say Rescue that doesnt indicate any water capacity etc and it could get confused with rescue appliances with no water like Naracoorte and Aldinga Beach etc. I thought this would be a standard call sign issue.

Country Fire Service / Competition memories
« on: March 16, 2007, 06:14:15 PM »
Anyone else have some funny/interesting memories from CFS competitions over the years?
I remember the CFS providing a fleet of small aircraft for staff and volunteers to fly to Port Lincoln (North Shelds)for comps. Wonder what that cost?
Also a certain region 1 brigade that was asked to re-run their dry hose drill event after a complaint by another team that this region 1 brigade had supplied their own hoses!! (go the graphite)

Country Fire Service / voting rights
« on: March 02, 2007, 06:00:15 PM »
What sort of rules do various brigades have in relation to voting rights at brigade elections? One that I was a member of allowed auxillary members to vote for brigade office bearers and senior firefighters etc. Even though some of these auxillary members didnt know some of the firies very well if at all. There was no minimum attendance requirement for training nights or meetings to maintain these voting privilages. One thing that I didnt agree with.

SA Firefighter General / Future Strike teams
« on: February 23, 2007, 01:41:55 PM »
Perhaps rather than worry about volunteers getting paid for coq, what about strike teams? Maybe some sort of system needs to be set up for CFS/MFS people to receive payment for attending campaign fires. The issue of getting people to go seems to be becoming more of an issue. Due to some self employed/employed people not being able to sacrifice their incomes to go. Or even a system where the employer can recive payment for allowing their volunteers to be absent like the army reserve do.

All Equipment discussion / CFS Type 2 Pumper
« on: January 29, 2007, 03:01:14 PM »
Can someone tell me a bit about the pumps on these. Someone told me that they have an auto pressure governor on the pump like the latest MFS Scanias. The MFS one is set up to compensate for fluctautions in supply pressure and to regulate flow even when nozzles are closed or opened.

Heard a farmer on the a radio talkback show whinging that since CFS went to trunked radios that no one can listen to them anymore. Of course you can you just need a trunking scanner to do it. Most people know that, dont they???

SA Firefighter General / Broadband/ADSL
« on: November 26, 2006, 08:01:15 PM »
Just wondering if there were many stations out there who are hooked up to broadband? I know there are some that decided to do it so that they could look up weather reports etc online during incidents for about the same cost as having a dedicated line for dial up. Also sends pager messages quicker I believe as it doesnt have to dial up.

SA Firefighter General / CFS Act
« on: November 19, 2006, 08:36:34 PM »
I heard recently from an unreliable source that the CFS Act is no longer valid due to the formation of SAFECOM. But CFS are now covered by a different act. Does anyone know about this?

Hey Rob didnt see your float in the parade were you there??
Its a pity none of the CFS brigades from the Gambier group dont participate. I know its in the city but its for the whole community as demonstrated by all the floats from surrounding town schools.

SA Firefighter General / Classic Adelaide emergency response
« on: November 19, 2006, 10:25:40 AM »
Does anyone know what emregency resources are available for this event? I have noticed that CFS brigades have been paged for accidents during this event. There would be some delays getting CFS appliances mobile and then to the actual scene surely. I know a few years ago there were CFS volunteers in rapid intervention type vehicles. Which were 4x4 wagon type cars with hydraulic rescue equipment and extinguishers on board. I dont think this still happens. Owing to the risk of accidents and especially fires during these events both here and interstate you would think they should have some good protection on scene.

SA Firefighter General / ESL good or bad?
« on: November 17, 2006, 06:49:00 PM »
Wondering whether most brigades/SES out there are better or worse off since the ESL? I have noticed a lot of new SES vehicles coming online in the last few years replacing some of the sh** boxes they had. While some CFS brigades like Salisbury received 2 brand new appliances within 5 years which would have been unheard of for them during the old council funding days ( lack of funding in many cases). Any thoughts?

Hypotheticals / Hypothetical Hazmat
« on: November 10, 2006, 01:51:28 PM »
Heres one. You are responded to a hazmat job along with a hazmat brigade/appliance from some distance away. On arrival you notice that there is a person that has been overcome by a mystery substance. You can see them but they are a bit of a distance away and you think you saw them flinch. You cannot smell anything but know that something isnt right. The hazmat appliance is 15 minutes away and you think that may be too long. What do you do??
1-put a BA set along with just your nomex/PBI and go in ?
2-Wait till the hazmat gear/operators arrive to be sure ?

SA Firefighter General / Brigade Drivers
« on: November 10, 2006, 01:46:48 PM »
Just wondering how most brigades are off for applaince drivers? Noticed a few brigades from time to time send pages out for driver required urgently or no appliance responded due to lack of drivers. The last brigade(s) I was in had plenty of drivers as some of them did it for their work. Some groups have been able to allocate money to assist members in getting their MR licence so they had more drivers. This is a good idea as long as people dont take advantage of it and then leave on you.
