Incident Operations / Burn offs
« on: May 23, 2005, 10:36:32 AM »
Any body want to have a wager on how many Burn Off's out of control that the Fire Services will attend in the next month. There's been a few of significance in the last few days (Marble Hill and Bradbury!) I know it raining today, but I bet that won't last!!

Don't know about the blue marker roll out... Is it a SA Water agreed thing now that they will place them everywhere throughout the state? Hope so, I thought it was just being done on a local basis, local government paying. Can someone fill me in please? :?

Country Fire Service / How is your Brigade Dispatched?
« on: May 16, 2005, 08:42:45 PM »
I thinks it sounds a bit gimmicky, however if it saves a significant amount of time for a turnout then I'm all for it.

There is a bit of a delay with paging via GRN system, I've been a MFS city station and heard 202 responded to a house fire at mitcham and the page for Belair was sent simultaneously, but I received it a good 90 seconds later. This probably isn't a concern in regional areas, but the fringe stations may benefit from patching into the MFS's voice over response messaging system, which I think still works on the old VHF radio network (may be wrong there).

If it safes time then go for it

All Equipment discussion / PBI GOLD level 3 gear
« on: May 15, 2005, 01:07:59 PM »
Not sure where I'm sitting with the PBI gear yet. Working at Ohalloran Hill Station today (colocated with MFS) and looked at the gear, First impression is how heavy it is, seems very cumbersome.

Talking with the crew they know that a couple of county fire services in the UK have union bans on the equipment purely on the increase temperature that they feel in just standard MVA and small fires, there has been a number of cases of firefighter being hospitalised with Heat related illness whilst wearing the PBI gear, don't know how it's going to related for us particularly during summer.

All Equipment discussion / NEW CFA 4000lt tanker
« on: May 04, 2005, 08:48:31 PM »
I don't mind the concept, and believe that a pumper/tanker has been talked about around the CFS traps (another thing not to hold my breath on!).

However, personally would like to see this appliance with a much bigger pump. They running automatic gear boxes, so running a Rosenbauer 750gpm pump, which would enable pumpand roll, could easily be done (and not to much more dollars), I'd also go mid mount with 2x 90m HP lines.

Like the concepts with cab access to crew deck (nice to see Shane from naracoorte can stand up in the back too), a pity to be losing a 6th seat though!

Country Fire Service / The Fire Ban sign

According to the pages I received I thought it was a Total Fire ban in the Mt Lofty and other fire district yesterday...

everyone who uses O2 in our brigade must be qualified for advanced resuscitation, which is a CFS accredited course. O2 delivery isn't rocket science, and it's benefits will always overcome any downfalls (you can take that as a medical absolute). Particularly in Trauma and any burns or respiratory emergency.

I would personally like to see O2 on any appliance with BA.

Country Fire Service / Brigade funding and hidden cash!
« on: April 21, 2005, 07:49:36 PM »
Heard an interesting rumour the other day that a CFS brigade has an account of close to $200 000 in saved funding for brigade usage. As I said only a rumour.

It was worded to me that the brigade would like to eventually get a Scania Pumper for there station, which only has SFEC classification of Rural/Urban

Would be interested in what you think of fund raising for brigade's need (which my brigade still does), and if so should this be limited, or at leat monitored buy SAFECOMM? Should brigades still be able to purchase there own appliance, should they have the choice to unite funding with Emergency Service Levy funding for bigger better appliances, Is this equitable for other needy brigades out there? Is this ethical to fund raise to this extend if the community already pays there levys?

Again only rumours, no substance to this, but interesting to ponder anyway!

Your thoughts!

All Equipment discussion / New 34P
« on: April 21, 2005, 07:40:21 PM »
If you haven't found it yet there are plans for the New 34P in the upcoming Volunteer Mag which can be downloaded on the CFS website, homepage (long PDF download of 80 pages plus):

http://www.cfs.org.au

similar appliance already used in WA by fesa:

http://167.30.74.10/?MenuID=101&ContentID=259

and also produced by SEM:

http://www.skilledequipment.com.au/vehicle_details.php?vehicle_id=2050

I believe that instead of the HM500 Darley pump the 34P will have a HE500 Darley which will be run from a 4cyl turbo ?Hatz motor (that will be loud I'm sure). If Burnside agree to it then they will apparently get a prototype with the HM500 pump which is PTO driven. I think HM pumps are 2 stage pumps.

They look like a bit of a development on the current 24P, but still something that I wouldn't want to swap current Pumper for (and I don't like the Pumper that much!)

All Equipment discussion / Mount Barker Pumper
« on: April 21, 2005, 07:28:39 PM »
I received a PM from jason our Mt Barker member on the forum who has informed me that they had the Dennis last weekend and found around 27 faults with it in a weekend, so it's been offline being repaired this week and they hopefully will get it back tomorrow night.

Also talk to a member of our brigade who is a MFS mechanic/engineer who said the dennis would keep up, if not out do the MFS on pumping capability! Looking forward to seeing it in action!

Thanks GT for the correction, I did know that SAFB/MFS had used Dennis appliances, just wasn't 100% sure of when.

I think a welcome to new member Jason who appears to be from Mt Barker so we should be able to get more of a regular update on Dennis!

As for Belair and the 34P, the brigade will definitely not lie down and accept this replacement for Pumper, there's no way we should be going backwards in capability!

I have been lead to believe that the CFS know uses Brigades 'Service Requirements' not SFEC description (which I think is the Board Approved documentation for appliances) for the desicion for appliance placements, but have not seen any documentation to prove that! I'm sure some politician would make a meal out of some of the processes that have been carried out within CFS at the moment.....

Terrorism / What would you do?
« on: April 18, 2005, 07:53:42 PM »
I agree with most of what has been written. My concerns differ somewhat with work though, as an employee on shift it would be hard to say no to responding to a need from the community, regardless of nature and size. Obvious the need of safety and not putting yourselve at risk is a primary concern of mine.

I believe that if an attack with ever happen (GOd Forbid!) that it will come on a smaller level, not the large thermonuclear device. Attacks on large crowd at AAMI Stadium with an airbourne organophosphate, or other chemical of biological device would devestating, but if you believe the people further up the line the services in this state are well prepared for such an event with adequate levels of PPE, Decontamination Equipment, and antedote supplies... Believe that if you will.

Do I believe the services are equiped enough to handle such an event? No is an easy quick answer. Most some HAZMAT incidents of the last 10 years would give some proof to that, there has been a number of incidents where MFS and SAAS personel have been hospitalised after exposure to simple organophosphate ingestions (not sure about CFS personel though). I would like to see increased training and equipment for all BA brigade. Maybe Splash suits and decon equipment on all BA appliances to enable Rapid Rescue and Decontamination of immediate personel (particularly the people in green strippy uniforms lying about on the ground!).

I don't believe that Adelaide or SA is a soft target for any attack. Areas like Port Adelaide/Osbourne with the Australian Submarine Corp, and hopefully Airwarfare Destroyer Shipyard (i'm all for it for employment and infrastructure reason, not for the product!) I believe would pose as interest for some nasty bad people somewhere in the world!

I better stop now, bit lengthy and haphazard (like my brain after studying for IC Paramedic Exams!)

Catch you soon

All Equipment discussion / Mount Barker Pumper
« on: April 18, 2005, 07:38:22 PM »
Mick, not sure as to why the vehicles are second hand in the first place, but I have heard that there was some industrial dispute/ union ban about the Dennis leaving the UK in the first place.

I believe there is a number of blown valves on the pump currently and some engine problems.

I've heard that the MFS Tech Service guy really like the appliance and rate it very highly. With the MFS like all fire services having a strong traditional bond I'm not surprise, as the then SA Fire Service (SAFS) in the 1970 ran Dennis appliances as front line truck, with an interesting front/bull bar mounted PTO pump???

I'd take one if one was offer as a replacement to our pumper instead of the 34P that I believe we're getting!

As for appliance movements I've got no problem with changing vehicle on workload issue. This is something that SAAS has looked at. Big problem is that stations with the higher workload tend to mistreat the vehicles, hard driving, hard treatment, and this tends to develop premature engine and ergonomic problems.

SAAS / SAAS Assist
« on: April 10, 2005, 07:22:13 PM »
Hi all, just wanting to know who's assisted SAAS with a patient lift? I've often been at work in situations where we can't get another SAAS crew to back us up for a lift, or other situation where I've had to use CFS ff's to assist with patient treatment (used one firey from Mt Compass that I know quite well and has a lot of experience to do CPR on a traumatic patient arrest once!)

How have you felt doing this? Do you think the Senior First Aid is adequate to enable assistance with patient care? Manual Handling, do you have any training with local crews about lifting techniques, SAAS equipment? Does the current situation work or is this something that the fire service should be involved in (lifting etc) what's your thoughts?

As a SAAS Manual Handling instructor I'd like to know if we need to make any changes?

Cheers

Country Fire Service / Use of fire sirens
« on: April 10, 2005, 07:10:55 PM »
 Sirens...mmmm big problem in my household! We live about 150m from the station and the siren, and it goes off almost daily, it's been hell with a baby under 1yrs trying to sleep during the day. Blackwood, Eden Hills and Belair sirens are all connected from when all three brigades we're automatically responded during daylight hours to any incident in any brigades area to address daytime crewing issues. The response griteria has changed, but not the siren. Belairs siren still goes off if Eden respond to a Animal Rescue or private alarm or whatever...Very annoying. Tried to get it changed to no outcome.

The siren system in Sturt group was turn off last year, but the community complained reasonably quickly. I was informed by a number of local residents that they find it reassuring to know that if something is happening, that the fire service is responding.

Personally I would like to see the siren used as a back up for communications (ie pager failure) and for a public notification for times of concern (going fire in local area). To enable this I feel manual activation at stations should remain for use under consultation with a Brigade Officer.

Incident Operations / Wingfield Dump Fire
« on: April 09, 2005, 03:37:58 PM »
Don't know who else is there, but Belair has had Tanker responded to Wingfield Dump Fire (4th Alarm Greater). I believe that Burnside 32 has been stepped up to Wakefield Street on stand by as well. I'd gather that Salisbury have a number of resources at the Dump as well!

Probably just the CFA trying to catch up with us...Hope that doesn't offend anyone! Looks a bit like the newer 24P's! I think it's probably just the water volune thing, I see that the MFB in vic call there 4000 litre appliances Heavy, only guessing though!

All Equipment discussion / New CFA/SEM Heavy Tanker
« on: April 08, 2005, 04:43:37 PM »
Hi All,

Whilst procrastinating today found a new appliance by Skilled for CFA, mark Heavy Tanker. Some of the concepts look good, Like:

-Crew Deck access from crew cab
-4000L with spare 750L for spray protection
-Mack Dual Cab with 270Hp (mmmm nice!)
-Not sure about the GAAM 325 Pump, would prefer a 750gpm 3 stage!
-Reasonable locker layout, though would prefer aluminium roll down door!

Have a look anyway:

Country Fire Service / Strike Team/Task Force Deployments
« on: April 08, 2005, 09:25:45 AM »
Hi All,

Just wondering what your thoughts about current Strike Team deployment systems of staging within a group area and then travelling as a convoy?

Personally I've always found this process to waste significant time for a number of brigade waiting for other's to meet (no problem with the slower brigade, as I fully understand distance, work and other requirements).

My thougths would be easier to respond Strike Team brigades directly to an incident and stage them closer to the incident. Producing team from bridages as they arrive. I have no problem working with other groups and this may be beneficial for other to see different crew and different command/leadership system!

I also like the concept of mulitgroup 'pre-emptive strike' teams (hope you like the pun!). Say a group has a third alarm fire within it boundries and can handle it with local resources. My thoughts would be to once a fire go's third alarm that one or two brigades are responded from each surrounding group to assist with fire. This could be an SOP for the SOC. Flooding a fire with resources would decrease the demand on the immediate crews, and also maintain adequate coverage in surrounding areas!

Like to hear your thoughts!

Country Fire Service / Wearing of PPE, or lack of it !!
« on: April 08, 2005, 09:16:24 AM »
Personally speakling I've seen so many situation and incidents where CFS personel aren't wearing appropriate PPE that I've given up worrying about it. Most of the time's I seen DGO's and GO's (just varifying that not current ones) rock up to incidents in command vehicles with no PPE. My view is the OHSW one that if you're supplied with the equipment, and get injured whilst not wearing appropriate PPE then you're at fault not the CFS, and you're infact liable under OHSW legislation...

Country Fire Service / New Helicopters
« on: April 03, 2005, 09:32:41 PM »
Hi all, thought you may be interested to know about the tender process for new Helicopter service in SA is now complete and I believe this will be what we're getting:

2x Bell 412 (or equivalent) set up as Rescue 51 is currently with focus on SAR and multitasking (ie Medivac, Fire Spotting, etc)

1x BK117 (replacing current Bell 217 as Rescue 52) this will be a quieter aircraft with multitask capacity. I believe a high push for more medical related set up with barn/clam rear doors for stretcher loading, winch capable, and again only heard throught the grapevine, but underbody slinging and fitting for a 1000lt Firefighting bucket! Range and speed for this aircraft will vary with layout, but about the same as Rescue 51 I believe (Max Speed 250+kmph and Range around 500kms deopendent on fuel tank confirguration)

I can see which aircraft will be request by most agencies!

I think it will all be up and running by december. Not sure whether CHC will maintain all aircraft and supply air crew, but I think BK117 is contracted from Helicopters Australia. :D

Incident Operations / Shed fire cause
« on: March 26, 2005, 08:59:00 AM »
Ha, some people...

Don't want to turn this into a fire cause competition, but one below was a personal stand out!

Worst cause for shed into house fire I've been involved with was a shed fire at Normanville (whilst I was in Yankalilla CFS), early morning response to going stucture fire, 0n arrival shed fully involved and house partially (1 room and eaves). After extinguishment and interviewing the resident it progressed that with the very cold night (1-2 degrees) they we're concerned about the old family dog being outside, so they moved the kennel into the shed and placed an electric blanket in the kennel for the dogs warmth! Poor dog was well and truly roasted in kennel!
