Title: Portable Dams
Post by: Mike on January 29, 2008, 06:32:44 AM
Why is it that we dont make better use of portable dams when BWC's are required?
Limits the issue of being waterless when the BWC needs to refill... Should a Dam of some form be stowage on BWC's (or are they already on the newer ones)?

I know they were utilised at the Cox scrub fire (last? time flys) year, but am noticing that they are not utilised at a lot of fires.

Is it because of time to set up?
not thought of at the time?
or simply not practical in many instances?

i definately only see them set up only once the fire has been contained.

I've seen them used alot around the place...although perhaps not used enough...part of the reason for that is perhaps the cost of purchasing one, and finding space to physically fit them on the Tankers..

My own Group has 4 Tankers, but had only one dam.... we wanted one per Tanker, but the Group budget couldn't handle it...we were told by Region that any funds would have to come out of Group budgets....    :-(

i believe they could be used a lot more. but yeah trying to fit them on tankers is a challange.

The caves BWC has a collar dam and if we need more the region 5 op's brigade has two,but yes they should be on BWC....the only problem i can see what if you use a council or private BWC and the group buys a dam and puts it on there who is going to look after it and make sure its only used for the fire service....
