Incident Operations / Media Helicopters and Multi Agency Talkgroups
« on: January 24, 2005, 03:24:01 PM »
Thanks Matt, I thought the helicopters would be a pretty handy search tool - communications as ever the issue  :)

On the Multi Agency TG, I thought it would make sense to have the Station on the MA TG. But a standard station has only one GRN station set and would therefore be unable to monitor the local channel (Group Base not normally operational for one or two Brigade response other end of Group)

And the command vehicle is a great idea if it weren't 60km away!

All Equipment discussion / Do they still make 24's?
« on: January 24, 2005, 02:31:59 PM »
Are they still delivering rural 24's? It's only been 34's and 24P's for a while hasn't it? I'm not sure what the question means? Rural 24's have been changed a little bit each build and there are a few different types out there. Do you mean stop making a rural 2000 litre appliances altogether or pull all the ones currently in service. We have a CFA built (1990) Hino which was one of the first of the standard Hinos in service. It's a special, not a rural, meaning nothing except that it has lockers down both sides as opposed to her "rural" sister delivered to us at the same time (and an extra ladder, I think). The "rural" appliance was relocated to Narrung in 1998 where I believe it still serves the community well after serving us faithfully for 7 long years including journeys to NSW, Flinders Ranges, South East.
Anyway my vote is, yes, we still have a use for rural 24's. There is a LARGE percentage of our 400+ Brigades that do relatively small callout numbers and whose main risk is rural. They are well served by a modern well maintained rural 24 appliance. (in my opinion).  I personally would love a specialised rescue vehicle and a 1000 gpm pumper with a dual tank foam pro (although in my limited experience AFFF is best applied with a foam branch with inductor which needs to be mixed at branch - happy to hear of alternatives). And a few other things :-), a new station, brass pole, dalmation  8)

Incident Operations / Media Helicopters and Multi Agency Talkgroups
« on: January 20, 2005, 01:26:03 PM »
OK, well yesterday was a call out of the usual when our two appliances traversed the country side looking for (from page) " report of light aircraft down 3 nautical miles east of drag strip". Lots of police, the regional commander and our two appliances didn't find it but a couple of members in a private vehicle did (with the help of some powerful binoculars! Had a bit of trouble getting out to it too! But when the channel 9 chopper landed not long after we had made it to it, it made me wonder. They would have been in a much better position than us to find out - is anyone aware of when they have been able to assist and communicate to emergency services? I guess it does happen, but we don't see them that often in our neck of the woods. Other point is how do people manage multi agency talkgroups (or any situation where monitoring two talkgroups in an appliance would be handy). We were given a MA channel, which would have been great if anyone had answered on it although I believe SHQ did contact SAPOL and ask them to monitor it. Problem is we may have missed them as we had to keep turning back to local TG as the station kept ringing us to say we were being contacted on the local TG or on State channel 111. Trying to use a handheld to monitor one channel is completely useless, transmissions were unreadable.

PS: The planes emergency landing was safe and the two occupants walked several kms to the Mallee Highway before anyone arrived  :)

HAZMAT / HAZMAT Initial Response Guide New Release

Yes ours arrived last week. Looks like one per Brigade rather than one per appliance. It's usurped it's predecessor in the yellow pocket!

It'd be great if all the members of this new forum contributed a few lines. I think a lot of us are keen to see it be a success, which it can't without member contributions. Don't be shy, everyone has something worthwhile to say  :)

Incident Operations / Jan 11th Not a good day
« on: January 11, 2005, 08:27:52 PM »
Well today started with a call to a car fire on the other side of the river, then a call for personnel to fly out to Pt Lincoln which was abandonded when we were called to the Mount Osmond Fire. It was a good day for me to have been tied up with work in the city all day :) Not so good when travelling home on the freeway  :(  but great to see all the appliances and personnel on the freeway (including ours) when I eventually got through.

Very, very sad the loss of lives on the peninsula. Hope that the rest of our season does not have any other tragedies in store and that both the public and the emergency services personnel stay safe.

SAMFS / Duplication
« on: January 08, 2005, 02:11:53 PM »
Our exCaptain moved to Murray Bridge and joined the MFS auxiliary there - they seem to have a fair few members currently.

So does a town like Murray Bridge need two services or one? If one, which one :!: Do they have a need for a retained service to do the kinds of things that I firmly believe volunteers should spend minimal time doing (ie: tonnes of fixed alarm activations, private alarms). And could they do without a CFS which a) is good urban backup and b) is a central point for a large Brigade with a big population to draw volunteers from to manage rural risks around the area supported by the smaller rural Brigades). Can a volunteer Brigade in a largish country town really sustain volunteers to do some of the more mundane but totally necessary fire service and associated duties? Particularly when the service is unable to address issues such as volunteer release from employment, loss of income, child care etc, recruitment, retention etc.

And what is the difference between two services (or three) in a country town and the duplication and proximity of resources in the urban interface areas?

And rather than just focus on whether a Brigade needs to full time paid, retained or volunteer based on the number of calls shouldn't we also be looking at the risks, types of incidents attended and proximity of other resources? Does a Brigade doing 350 calls a year (many of them fixed alarm or stop type calls) with another service and three other Brigades within 20 minutes really need to be full time paid? What about a Brigade doing 50 in a small area struggling to find vollies where the incidents are high risk/rescue and the next resource is an hour away?

I am in support of all members from all services who are out there protecting their communities and assets regardless of uniform and motivation. I'm sure the vast majority of us would be happy if we can find a better way to deliver our services. I guess that is the challenge of SAFECOM.  :D

Industrial & Private Fire Services / Private Units
« on: January 06, 2005, 08:31:45 AM »
All good issues raised - but how do we stop them? We would have no hope of enforcing any ban even if we were to face the ire of the community by imposing one. And as Blinky pointed out - the extra water is great ('specially if someone slings them a litre or two of A Class foam). And the farmers units have been great front line attack and certainly reduced the scale of a few recent jobs I've been to started by farm machinery. But there is no doubt that there can be some negatives :!:
So perhaps the happy medium is to try to work in together and provide them some information and education. The handbook sounds like its worth a try. Our Council fire prevention leaflet tells local farmers to wear appropriate clothing and report to the fire service (on UHF - we had to buy one  :) ) Anyone out there got an integrated approach working?

ALL Rescue / Update from STC
« on: January 04, 2005, 08:18:41 PM »
Chatted to a State Training Officer today who explained that a new process has needed to be developed as the old reacred (and skills maintenance package) was based on the old course. He's been getting around to Brigades (a long process) to deliver some one day update training. Apparently part of this is the Respond to Road Accident module in BFF1 so that's something we can access easily. A new skills maintenance process should be in place soon. :)

CFS Cadet Corner / Fire Service Cadets vs Youth Centre
« on: January 04, 2005, 02:40:34 PM »
We had a few interested cadets who, I think, enjoyed training with the seniors more than when they were moved to a separate programme with less emphasis on fire related stuff. There was a lot of good work done by Tracy in ESAU in youth programs but it introduced a plethora of rules and regs and was generic and I consider more suited to a youth organisation than a fire service junior unit. It also caused a bit of a stir by sometimes seeming in conflict with our own services act, regs and SOPs. Our cadets are virtually now non existant - waiting to come back as firies at 16 as some have already done.

Salt Creek, Tilley Swamp and Kingston I think are chasing fires but it sounds like there is a bit of rain about down there, so that is good.

Incident Operations / Black Hill Injury
« on: January 03, 2005, 10:08:29 AM »
I hope the firefighter mentioned in this article is recovering well and wish her all the best. Also best wishes to Camo, hope he's on the mend.

From: http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200501/s1275577.htm

>>Hectares of conservation park burnt in scrub fire
Homes at Athelstone in Adelaide's north-east have escaped damage from a scrub fire in the Black Hill Conservation Park.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze around 4.30am ACST today.

Scrub alongside Gorge Road at Athelstone was burning and being fanned by a stiff breeze.

About 80 Country Fire Service (CFS) volunteers fought the blaze, which burned more than 20 hectares of the conservation park.

At first light, water bombers were sent into the air, helping to bring the remaining pockets of the blaze under control.

A female firefighter was injured during the blaze and is receiving medical treatment after hurting her shoulder.

Police have blocked Gorge Road between Kirkview and Corkscrew Roads while CFS crews continue to mop-up.

The road is expected to remain closed at least until midday.>>

Sad to read that a firefighter was injured this morning and I hope that she is doing OK. Interesting that the media can't help themselves from describing the firefighter as a female firefighter. Didn't see Camo described as a male firefighter. (Hope he's also doing OK).
Stay safe all.

Anything interesting happening out there? Anyone go to Black Hill this morning or Cleland yesterday? Over the Christmas period we've had some MVA's and a boat fire which took some getting to. Thankfully been pretty quiet but I don't like the look of the lightning to the South West at the moment. Nasty sort of a day!

I think there are less problems, in general, with the Mills Tui built 24P's. Our major problem is the airconditioning doesn't work 8)
The CD player does though :!:
A bit different from the Inter and the Bedford when I first joined (and I am only 35, it's not that long ago).

ALL Rescue / Reacreditation for RCR Training
« on: January 03, 2005, 09:25:07 AM »
Sounds like at least there's a plan afoot to reacredit you. We've been told that there are no more reacreds and that we have to handle it internally with a Brigade RCR trainer. Trouble is we have no idea how to do this. The SFEC printout no longer shows about 8 of our operators (including me) as qualified as we all recrdeited together 5 years ago. The printout comes with some handwritten full course dates as we are "under SFEC" in that area. I'm more interested in getting us all reacredited and then we'd meet SFEC easily. Scarily it was put to me that all those outside of the competency period would have to undertake the whold course again. I can't see that happening.  :?

All Equipment discussion / Wajax couplings on 25mm lay flat
« on: January 03, 2005, 09:08:18 AM »
I saw after I posted this message there's an area for equipment discusssion and I probably should have posted this there   The storz we have used for years on our 25mm line are great and banded to the line in the usual manner. I think the couplings would work well on the bigger lines. The wajax seem like a fine quick release coupling but it's a bit of a worry when the coupling (attached to the metal band that pushes into the hose) blows out when charged properly for the first time   I hadn't  noticed what fitting is on the other end of the reel because we always add the extra line at the nozzle end. One of the major joys with the new 24P is the 60m hose reel  :D

So does anybody know if CFS Brigades have had these distributed? We received one per appliance when the last one was released but I haven't seen this update yet.   I've seen plenty of the old old ones in appliances (pre 1997).

All Equipment discussion / Wajax couplings on 25mm lay flat
« on: January 01, 2005, 09:25:19 PM »

We attempted to use the brand spanking new 25mm lay flat on the end of the 60m reel from the new 24P yesterday to get down a cliff at a boat fire.
Sadly the wajax coupling came straight of the end of the line - and it doesn't look like something we can repair. Shame we couldn't use the 25mm lay flat on our other appliance fitted with storz couplings. The storz is banded to the line and easy to repair if necessary (not that we've had to over the 8 years we've been using it). How do other uses find storz vs wajax?  :?:  :?:  :?:
