Title: Supress Urban Fire
Post by: strikeathird on April 06, 2006, 01:40:02 PM
Hi all..

After completing CFB early last year, we were informed of the intentions to have further training in modules of SUF (Which is what CFB is a module from).

These included things like advanced door tactics (where instead of starting in the cell, we would be positioned outside, and have to open the door and enter the cell, fighting the gasses etc back..)

Does any-body know if further training in such areas is going to be developed / continued?  (Any CFS instructors that might know the answers)...

EG. Are we going to get to finish the SUF course ?  Instead of just pulling the CFB module out of it?

Many thanks.

What is the SUF course?

Never heard of it.

SUF = Supress Urban Fire.. You probably wouldn't have heard of it without participating in Compartment Fire Behaviour Course.

supress urban fire. is it true what I have heard that level 3 is going to be turned into this, following level 2's change into suppress wildfire? I have heard that this will not take place for some time though.

Haven't heard that..

Am more interested however in finding out about further training on the lines of CFB, which is a module out of SUF.

Sorry I can't be of real help, but I can say that I've heard that too strikeathird... should be a great course if they get it going...
I believe the new level 3 is scheduled for 2008, and once that is out, on completion you will have a cert 4 in fire fighting (or public safety?)

Without any background knowledge or seeing the unit of training mix, I think it's more likey that people will have a great start at either Cert 2 or 3. Cert 4 is Fire Fighting Supervision not operations... :-)

Well with Brett Pollini (sp) now gone, who knows how CFB of SUF sill be headed in the future...

Im guessing no one has heard anymore about the proposed training in SUF, incorperating and further enhancing skills learnt in CFB .. ?

1. BA Wearer
2. Compartment Fire Behaviour
3. Advanced Ventilation Techniques

maybe sometimes you should think before you speak!

I WRITE what I think and if you have a problem with that so be it!

Go and yell in your pillow or hug a tree but don't bring down the quality of threads on SAFF

and ruin it for everybody else.

Unless the assistant really is strikathird and he has been trying to swap identities without arousing suspicion! :-o *cue dramatic music.

People come out of CFB course thinking they are superman, does that mean their ego is their kryptonite.  (Just saw the movie :-P )

Hi All,

I have a feeling that Brett went to region 5 as training or something? In the volunteer i think.

I have just done compartment, and it is a great course gives you more knowledge, but you need to practice the skills and knowledge to be semi-proficient. Do it weekly and you might be.....

All the instructors were great guys, great knowledge and people skills so don't worry about it..

I have a feeling that they are working on a follow on course for compartment which is tactical venting.

Sam

wanting to bring the topic of CFB/Suppress Urban Fire back into discussion, just completed the course,  found it is pretty much ESSENTIAL for all BA operators to know the techniques...

Recommending it to all.

Any stories of those who have done it and have used the training in incidents?

The education behind CFB and knowing what to look for is great. But in reality being able to use the techniques correctly at a job is not something that comes along that often.

The other issue I've noticed it people not understanding the techniques properly, and causing issues. People have been passed as competent on the CFBT course, but there is no way I would ever want to be in a building with them.

All in all, its a valuable tool, but not the be all and end all of firefighting, no matter how much some people want it to be.

I consider it impressive if you can put out a 3 room fire, within 15mins of the page, with 300L of water, and have Fire Cause pat your back...true story recently by one of the instructors.   And this didnt happen in Region 1 or 2.

Correct there numbers,  its just a tool for the toolbox.
