why was a bushfire such as canberra not suitable to stay and fight?

From footage i have seen one (maybe 2) person(s) saved an entire street (think it was a small street) from the firestorm....so it proves that a little effort is all that is needed.  And this guy did it wearing nothing but a singlet and shorts i think!

Well for CFS people can ride once they are 16 and have completed BFF1. So you will likely get 16 YO at MVAs. Of course it is importand to talk to them during ( if possible) and after the job to make sure the less experienced people are ok. Also to keep them in the loop of what is happenning particularly at the nasty ones.

I could be wrong but if you want to be a firefighter you now need to be 18 unless you have been through cadets in which case you can be a firefighter at 16....can anyone confirm or deny this?

As far as SPAM is concerned.....They really shouldn't tar everyone with the same brush...i know plenty of under 18's that have been to fatality's and are fine and never have had any emotional problems with this.

Maybe people from the country are a bit tougher then the city/urban fringe folk?

Nice looking appliance but not good for a running grass fire..........

Why not?  Not alot of difference by comparison.

I think he was referring to the lack of crew deck...

How much room do you want?

Hate to burst your bubble, but volunteers are not considered either full time nor "firies" by professional firefighters.

Thats what i call comedy!

Crank, tell me, are all SACFS personel rescue, CABA and Hazmat trained... no.

You werent talking about quantity trained.  you were talking about quality.

I was referring to training and in your last comment you were referring to quality of crew.

You Said "In terms of response times, appliance capabilities, training and quality of crew, CFS can simply not compete with SAMFS for Urban response."

The CFS can provide an urban service as good as MFS but not with our current appliances.

In terms of response times, appliance capabilities, training and quality of crew, CFS can simply not compete with SAMFS for Urban response.

All correct except maybe training.  As far as im concerned MFS/CFS training in Urban firefighting is pretty much the same.

Intergrated stations must be the way of the future.  Its the most efficient way to provide a fire service to the community.

Ive got no beef with MFS taking over if thats what is required to provide an adequate service to the community as that is why we are all here.

What we need to establish is a serviceable median between paid and volunteer station.  As it has been said we can not afford to have paid stations all over the place but there also needs to be a point at which the work load is to big for the vollies and maybe too much risk.  The CFS can provide an urban service as good as MFS but not with our current appliances.

If Mt Barker is at that stage then i dont see why a full time service should not be implemented.  But why cant vollies and paid staff work out of one station?  As it is not feasible to completely disband Mt Barker CFS and replace them with one or two MFS appliances.

There is alot of useful info on that site.

Just looking through Adelaide's data for august....they have had 16.6mm of rain and 24mm of that evaporated!

Interesting to note in the last 1/2 month all soil dryness indicators have risen.

So it would seem although some of us are having reasonable rainfall we are losing quite a bit in evaporation

If the brigades were acting under the direction of the council officer then they have done the right thing.  They have reported it to the Fire Service so obviously its under their direction that they want it extinguished.

Hi Crank,
Interesting.. Cant say i envy you with such an issue in your brigade. I cant really shed any light on what to do, Although the other people on here have probably covered the correct way to go about stoof, i just wonder if getting the region and people outside the brigade in is going to have longer term repercussions, possibly towards your self.. While i dont think going against SOP's etc should be condoned, experience which im sure your captain has a bit of, can sometimes give a view as to the faults in SOP's. before you all get on your high horse about it, have a look at the 'wearing of helmets' thread where many of you state that you wear structural helmets all the time for the added protection (so do i infact), remember back to when that was a BIG no no, and would leand to you being thrown off the fire ground supposedly! I suppose what im getting at is that if you look at everyhting with your BFF1 glasses on, having done BFF1 by the 'book' then you may perhaps shake your head at how things are done in real life, but with a bit of experience you realise that the 'book' doesnt put fires out, although be it on your (or in this case your captains head) if something goes wrong...

I understand what your saying...its not practical doing everything by the book but it cases like wearing PPE thats a given.

Id be glad to take it to the GO etc but as you say it can have long term effects on the brigade and/or myself.

Thanks for your assistance

Doesnt the first responding appliance have to be a minimum of a 2.2 appliance with a crew of 4?

Hello All,

Im new here.  i was referred here as i was told it can be a useful tool to solve problems.

anyway.

Our brigade Captain continually ignores S.O.P's and quite often doesnt where his PPE which sometimes puts his life in danger and makes the cfs look bad.

What can we do?
