Country Fire Service / CFS COQ to CFS
January 18, 2008, 05:10:37 PM
I have noticed more and more that CFS are doing COQ into other brigades stations is there any reason for this or is it only hen there are large incidents eg brown hill creek and hence lots of appliance stripped from an area.

also what warrants a COQ is there an average no of calls that the station must do because it could be very boring doing a COQ in some stations.

Fire Fighter Training / Trapped FF
January 14, 2008, 04:36:50 PM
In the thread Rescuing the rescuers there was much discussion about the lack of training and equipment for rescuing trapped FF from specifically buildings that are still a fire environment.

Now i want people to post methods and ways of training crews to rescue FF who are specifically Trapped so more is required than going to the sounding DSU?

any ideas at all and making use of basic tools that all brigades should have.

SA Firefighter General / state of emergency
December 18, 2007, 07:28:30 AM
With the recent KI fires almost becoming a state of emergency I was wondering what exactly does it change like what powers are gained etc.

i also heard that it would enable the army to be called in to help but why can't we ask for the army without calling a state of emergency?

Hypotheticals / You hear a DSU
October 29, 2007, 01:32:18 PM
You are on a hose line right at the front of the fire aggressively attacking and you are successfully slowing the spread.  your BA set has 170 bar left and you hear a DSU quite loudly but you are unable to see more than about 1m if that.

the structure is a large open plan shop similar to a supermarket so the shelves act like walls to you but not the fire.

What do you do? and why?

Fire Fighter Training / firefighter down
October 03, 2007, 09:21:23 PM
I am trying to come up with a way to get firefighter down training to work well and give the rescuers or emergency BA team the shock so they didn't know it was coming? any suggestions on how?

OFF Topic / Horse Flu
September 02, 2007, 05:24:57 PM
Can some one tell me what this equine influenza actauly does to a horse? like does it ruin it's racing  life?, kill it and  any thing else.

i personally have found out a lot about an industry that I don't see as a hugely important industry yet the media are loving it. (when i say hugely important i mean it seems contained to the horse industry and isn't really going to effect the general population like say bird flu would or foot and mouth)

Country Fire Service / Number of trucks to jobs
August 31, 2007, 06:42:40 PM
In other threads there seems to be some debate on how many trucks to sent to call outs. what are your brigade's/ groups policy's on this?

my brigade it is as many trucks as we get crew for.

Hypotheticals / USAR
August 06, 2007, 05:06:33 PM
The horrible bridge collapse in the US made me wonder about a couple of things.

In Adelaide a structure has collapsed it is(was) a 3 story concrete building with  a car park underneath and it is known that people are trapped in the rubble.

now it is equal distance from CFS and MFS stations so it doesn't matter what service is responded.
Obviously the first crews to arrive will do what they can to protect extremities and any easily accessibly rescues whilst remaining safe. Now my main question is once the site had been deemed a recovery and not a rescue who job is it to recover any  casualties?

and Is there anything taught in USAR that should make me Tell my Crews NOT to move rubble etc. even if people are visible and screaming at them?

Hypotheticals / RIT
June 16, 2007, 05:20:54 PM
inspiration for this came from firehouse

You are at a 2 story house fire with thick smoke coming out of under the eaves of the first story and visible in the 2nd story windows. there is 1 2man BA team on the roof preparing to vent 2nd story windows and one BA team has entered the front door with a hose and been in for 10 minutes when their DSU starts making a racket.

you are part of a 2 man crew told to get them out.
there is no visible fire from outside the structure but LOTs of smoke?
sorry
What do you do? How do you go about getting them out etc

After reading a bit more it occurred to me most people hopefully would follow the hose in and usually find them so lets just say they aren't at the end of the hose.

Country Fire Service / Experiance on of OIC
May 30, 2007, 08:17:11 PM
In the CFS it is some times an issue where a FF with not much experience gets the task of running a job. I read this http://forums.firehouse.com/showthread.php?t=91011
On firehouse and thought it was a case of incredible American's wanting authority. But out of interest wondered if any of you guys and gals had had similar situations or what you would do if you can see that something is not going to work?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btP_vy5cQq4

it was shown in a philosophy lecture at uni today.
it demonstrates how Palm readers and the like can actauly operate

however sometimes they don't realise they are doing this and believe that they really do have a 6th sense.

All Equipment discussion / Ideal CFS pumpers
May 23, 2007, 09:32:23 PM
Well Since everyone is so absorbed in CFS having a lack of good pumpers and just getting type 2 mediums so here is the question: without any budget constraints what would be the ideal CFS pumper?

So far from other threads i have picked up:
4000L
2 HP lines
mid mount pump
Lots of power so they can operate in hilly areas.

I'll try and edit this post to add new sugestions.

All Equipment discussion / K12s
May 10, 2007, 08:03:58 PM
K12 or chain saws with a disc don't seem to make an appearance in CFS.
http://www.stihl.com.au/Products/subcategory.cfm?isubCategoryID=14 Link to what i am talking about

now assuming you can fit them on your truck does any on have any opinions on these?
most people i have suggested them to just say "you don't have enough time" but i would have thought they would be very usful in getting into overly secure structures.
