Had a good crawl over the Eden Pumper yesterday, before they had to head out for a HAZMAT job. I'm really impressed in it! Would like an Auto Gear Box though.

Interesting on the Pump is that to Draught from a tank or dam quickest way of filling tank is to run a filler length from an outlet and feed it to the direct tank feed!

Looks the goods!

Terrorism / Terror In London
« on: July 08, 2005, 12:25:38 AM »
I'm sure you've all heard by now...
London Terror Attack, 6 seperate seemingly well planned and well organised attacks on seperate public transport (soft) targets.

Current estimate on news was 45 dead and up to 1000 injured.

I think the London Emergency response looked well organised but manic as expected.

My thought go out to them all.

Could we deal with something as big? I don't what to think about it know, but will ponder it later.

Has Virginia got their new 34P? If so what are their thoughts? Any photos?

Loss leads to anger, and anger leads to a want to blame.

I believe that this is all very unfortunate and sad for all the people involved. As for a class action against the CFS, well that's the seeking to blame!

I also believe that the weather conditions experienced on Eyre Pen on Black Tuesday would have made the fire very difficult to contain regardless of the amount of resources sent.

Image the different fire Mount Osmond would have been if the wind conditions were doubled in speed!

I hope some good comes out of this for all involved.

Pump on the Louisville is the same as on Belairs, a Darley JMP 450 GPM (2 Stage for Volume or Pressure), Type 2 comes with a Rosenbauer Multistage (3 Stage) 750 GPM pump which should be able to simultaneously pump pressure and volume! On paper it should almost be twice the pump!

Seagraves... Too big, to square and slow take off! I think a new Dennis Sabre would out perform, out pump and out manevour it any day! I've heard that when the Dennis come of the production line you can leave rubber on the road with all it's torque! I'm sure some will find all the firgures and stats between them, I just want to antagonise a little! :-D

Got a bit of a low down on the truck:

Moore did the Build up, MFS workshops did the fit out. Some of the panels are now lifting as they were put on with double sided 3M sticky tape! True Story no bull! Apparently using the sticky tape is what fire appliance manufacturer is europe have been doing for years!

Interesting though!

Hi All,

Just want to convey some congratulations, I've been on this site now for a while and have enjoyed it! Version 2 works well and it has given many ff's out there a good platform to discuss many issues floating around.

Congrats as I saw the Visitor log has surpassed the 10000 mark!

Keep it up!

Thanks

All Equipment discussion / Couple of questions
« on: June 29, 2005, 08:50:02 PM »
I like the look of the vehicle, and don't mind the rear mount PTO.
Steve, just a few quick questions from me!

Does the Pump have 4 inlets (64mm) + 100 suction and 4 outlets?

Hard to judge in the photos, but on the passenger/officer side of the appliance at the front of the lockering is that a direct inlet to tank for filling?

Does it have a monitor?

When's it going on line?

Hope you guy's like it!

After reading through a few articles I have found that a NZ university has done quite an extensive trial comparing CAFS, Class A foam and Water in controlled structural burns for a study and the findings were reasonable non conclusive. In saying that it was noted that CAFS offered better cooling in most situations, which I found interesting as I thought CAFS would extinguish, but not offer that water run off which I think would cool better.

I would like to see some trials done with this technology as there are a few CAFS unit popping up now, most are for rural appliance (Beliar 14, Bradbury 14 and Morph Vale 14), but the Blackwood set might prove its worth with a trial. The concern I have is that CAFS is more efficient with a Smooth Bore Nozzle offering a jet/stream of CAFS, but powercone and fan pattern offer somewhat better firefighter protection.

I think the crane is an interesting add on for that appliance. I believe it is from the old rescue tender with the pod system where they could transfer a pod to the ground. Don't know how much it gets used, but have only heard of it once with a patient removal from a balcony on a 2 storey house at Seaview Down recently.

I don't think any other fire services in oz have a crane on there heavy rescue tenders.

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has come across and information or studies comparing CAFS and Compartment Fire Behaviour Techniques? I've looked through the Fire Tactics page and found nothing really descript about CAFS. If any of you have had experiences with both please let me know!

Cheers

SAMFS / 204
« on: June 16, 2005, 01:51:31 PM »
Just in at Wakefield Street MFS HQ (Station 20) and got to see what looks to be the new replacement for 204. Looks to have the same buildup on the back as current, including the Palfinger Crane, but with a new Scania Cab/Chassis. Only new addition is a winch on the front.

It would be nice if the CFS could run similar Rescues!

SA Firefighter General / Re: NEW APPLIANCES
« on: May 27, 2005, 08:57:51 PM »
Not really sure Bill. I think that the CFS has to go away for prototype appliances and stick to what is available 'off the shelf' now. It seems a bit like everytime a new appliance is required for the CFS we need to reinvent the wheel. Time to just look around at what other services use and see whether it's appropriate for our use.

I think that CFS is now recognising that each region has differing needs and equipment may in the future be region specific. Say in Region 3 and 5 water supply is a constant concern then the majority of appliance may end up being 34's or bigger, where in Region 1 and 2 there is a need for some smaller appliances for the hills trails and a more significant urban interface leading to different appliances in thoses area. Hopefully it will produce a more relative and common sense system instead of a one size fits all system which we've seen in the past

Electing positions of responsibility has the downfall in the current system of the ability of to be easily manipulated. Friend and mate voting for friends and mates is a difficult thing, and I think that you don't always end up with the best person in the best position. Maybe an other option would be a vote by a brigade management team which could interview applicant to maintain an election of sorts but give more scope for people to gain respect and understanding of people wishing to fill this positions. Currently if youve joined a brigade and passed the probation period then you have a voting right, often without an understanding or knowledge of the people involved and their abilities and leadership capabilities.

Women of the Fire Industry / Equity in Organisations
« on: May 26, 2005, 06:58:47 PM »
Now I think this is a touchy subject, and possibly very damaging to the CFS and VFBA. For equity to exist in any organisation it need to firstly recognise it's shortcomings as an organisation, whether it's a volunteer emergency service or a multinational billion dollar company, in the areas of culture, gender, ethics, race, sexuality, and diversity. This should take place as a proactive procedure, not reactive or presumptuous. (That sound almost political in tone doesn't it?)

My believes as follows: 'If' the CFS/MFS has an appropriate code of conduct for its employees (including volunteers) it should cover all aspects of equity for gender, race, culture and creed in its mandate. Having stuctures in place like 'women in the cfs' may have benefit immediate needs of recognition of this group, but from an external point of few the fact that this group exist may mean to people that problems of gender exist, which I don't believe is the case!

I will stand infront, behind, next to any of my piers in the CFS regardless of there culture, gender, race, ethnisity, sexuality, believes because I believe we share some things in common. They are that we wear our uniform to protect our communities, friends and family in times of crisis, and that we do it without thanks, at all times and in all conditions.

Harassment  :x in the volunteer setting is a whole other topic and is rife through many organisations and dare I say probably in the CFS is certain areas

If you're interested to read have a look at the following:

http://www.parliament.sa.gov.au/Internet/DesktopModules/Display.aspx?CALLER=habills_search.htm&IS_QUERY=Fire&IS_PAGE_SIZE=20&SEARCH_PAGE=habills_search.asp&DOC_INDEX=1&HIGHLIGHT_HITS=True&RESULT_COUNT=40&DOC_URL=http://www.parliament.sa.gov.au/catalog/habills/503/50-03-094.htm&DOC_TITLE=Fire%20and%20Emergency%20Services%20Bill%20%5BAs%20Introduced%5D

Hopefully it work, but it is a transcript of the whole bill. Just having a quick flick through the contents I think they are looking at instigating a SAFECOM Executive Board, which I guess will displace current CFS Board. It will probably make a good reading for me on night shift tonight!

Difficult on to vote on Mike, I'd say appoint from the options, but another option may be apply!

In SAAS all volunteer appointment are now carried out by our HR department, which includes an advertisement, and full application process which involves a review of the application letter, CV, then an interview which has a Management Rep, in regional areas a community rep and a rep from the team. This has been studied to make it an equitable process.

I'd like to see something similar, I know this may be time consuming, but could cut out a lot of the current problems. I would appoint Senior FF's though, to enable succession planning and offer experience to others!
