A mate from Tassie sent me some pics of the very early stages of the Myer fire in Hobart, its amazing to see how out of control it got.

The Humour Zone / The Gynaecologist
« on: September 27, 2007, 09:02:57 AM »
A gynaecologist had become fed up with the high malpractice insurance
premium and was on the verge of being burned out. Hoping to try another
career where skillful hands would be beneficial, he decided to change
careers and become a mechanic. He found out from the local technical
college what was involved, signed up for evening classes, attended
diligently, and learned all he could.

When the time for the practical exam approached, the gynecologist
prepared carefully for weeks, and completed the exam with tremendous skill.

When the results came back, he was surprised to find that he had
obtained a score of 150%. Fearing an error, he called the instructor,
saying "I don't want to appear ungrateful for such an outstanding
result, but I was wondering if there had been an error which needed adjusting."

The instructor said, "During the exam, you took the engine apart
perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. You put the engine
back together, again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of the mark."

The instructor went on to say, "I gave you an extra 50% because you did
all of it through the muffler.

Wearing just overalls using a chainsaw is about as safe a firies wearing a Lycra jumpsuit to a fire. He obviously doesn't believe in setting an example, if he that experienced then he should know better, neither the SES or the CFS need people like that.

jasec how much tree felling have you done? (more out of interest)

Felling trees in amongst houses is a very difficult process however free felling when there is little on no assets other than yourself  is a much simpler proscess and doesn't take much more than a confident person with a chain saw and a bit of common sense.

I did s/loads when i was with national sparks, it is a simple process to do it in a open area when you get it right, if you hang one up or it drops in the wrong direction your in a whole lotta strife.

There area number of different felling courses you can do, the will give you qualifications to fell trees of certain sizes, ie 300mm, 800mm etc. Felling is a something that needs to be taken very seriously its a filtered dangerous job if your not sure what your doing. A course will only teach you so much, you need to put the skills into practice in different situations to become really competent at it.

Apparently its more than a demo, they have a heap of them at SAAS HQ, they look very different, but doesn't matter what it looks like as long as its got the good things on the inside, thats all that matters.

I'm some cases it could work having GO's doing comms for quieter groups, but for a busy group like Mawson it would be a nightmare.(Just used mawson as an example, there are plenty of other groups that are just as busy). You have to remember that these guys are also volunteers, the majority have full time jobs to contend with as well.

I was meaning the whole fall in on marker, right dress, crews to attention, at ease bit, a true parade so to speak. You are right in the fact that it gives the officers a chance to make sure PPE is clean, boots clean etc.

Country Fire Service / Re: Train/tram crossings
« on: September 12, 2007, 11:35:39 AM »
Only ever done it once, that was in NSW for the bushfires and we had to cross track with gates down, but there was also a person from the Transport Department there saying that it was a malfunction in the gates and trains had also been stopped from running on the line due to the fires, so doesn't really count.

Wouldn't even think of doing it normal situations, cause if you put it in sport terminology, trains are back 2 back undefeated premiers when playing cars & trucks.

Hey Jono, There are heaps of detectors that test for LELs and gases in the air just have to find a suitable one within the brigades price range.

We should be looking at the new Tassie "tankers" thats a great setup. Apprently they have 25% more space than the current version, they only have a half crew deck, for the off chance you need to fight off the back.

Is that the one that was designed in consultaion with firefighters to build a practical and efficient appliance.

What do you want? Do you want a specific CO2 Detector? Or just a gas detector for general use?

The CDU 440 is a good CO2 only detector.

There are many MANY types of gas detectors. PID's are not the be all and end all...

True, PIDs seem to be flavour of the month with CFS, do you have a CDU 440 is it a personal detector or used for general detection, ie confined spaces.

SA Firefighter General / Re: Seaford Responses
« on: September 07, 2007, 10:04:05 AM »
I think this topic is Seaford Responses or perhaps we should start a new thread in relation to SOP 4.5 Automatic Fire Alarms and Responses :?

I agree, its gone way off track and it goes way beyond Seaford responding two trucks to a rubbish fire, Topic should Brigade Responses, because it is totally wrong to have this whole topic based on Seaford when it is clearly obvious that plenty of brigades are doing it.

if you want me to feel sory for my actions then you shall be waiting a long time. there have been meetings between the services and to have a RC from MFS walk into the meeting and say the "MFS are volunteers just like you are" is crap the CFS dont want to sort out the problems they have with the MFS the MFS dont care what every one else do and all we want is a fire cover crew dont care who.

some one said that the mfs would be able to garentee a crew well whats a crew four isnt it MFS continualy roll with 1 or 2 crew on board this forum is a complete JOKE, every body in here slags of other services and degrades people i work with the crews i am talking about i know that they know me we all know whats going on just non of the have the guts to say anything.

this forum is full of people that have opinions and dont want to do anything about it just write it on a screen and feel good about them selves. sorry but emergency services isnt that nice you get slaged off abused all sorts i have been on SES taskings and abused by CFS personel so you want me to slag people off i can cause i have been tame

SO ANYBODY TAHT WANTS TO HAVE A GO BRING IT ON

Man you got problems. :| :| :|

Hey Jono, think your talking about a PID, is it for gas / chem leaks, if so its a PID your after, unless the brigades buys it out of there own funds you will have stuff all chance of getting one, then there is the training that goes with it. Must admit they are a great piece of equipment.

Sesroadcrashrescue hope you don't share a station with the CFS, cause you will be one unpopular bloke next time your there. Ive said this message to you before on another post, start doing some serious training with the local services, get to know them, build a good working relationship with them and work well together, instead of bagging them because someone did or didn't get responded.
