Fire Fighter Training / Re: radio operator training materials?
« on: February 27, 2006, 02:11:29 PM »
CFS GRN have the Private call and page facilities.... just depends what microphone you have on the radio.....

Microphone ??....interesting.
It is a button on the vehicle/base mounted and a menu option on the handhelds. So every SES GRN radio has the ability, but strict SOP's exist in its usage.

athelstone to glynde, and stirling to glen osmond.
also tea tree gully to golden grove...

strange that norton summit moved to oakden, when so many other EMA brigades didnt roll..

luckily CFS seemed to be fairly quite.

Sorry to sound dum, but what does the acronym EMA mean ?

can anyone point me to any training materials for new station (or group base) radio operators? (apart from that contained in BFF1)
ta.

For comparison, if you want a copy of the SES Training manuals, let me know. I can convert them to PDF & email direct.

I understand they will be different because SES have 'private call' & 'radio paging' features, which I am not sure if CFS installed.

The SES talkgroup allocation are still under review, so that will be changing sometime in the future.

Would not like to face a SAPOL STAR squad team in the 'paint-ball competition'. But would good to watch though.

don't be so intimidated. a couple of years ago the STAR group boys were up at woodhouse doing the commando and ropes course. there was a scout camp there as well (i was at the camp). 5 of the STAR boys got cocky and challenged 5 of the older scouts to a commando and ropes course race.
RESULT - scouts won by more than 3 minutes.
AFTERMATH - probably 5 new STAR force recruits.
true story, saw it with my own eyes.

Have been to Woodhouse Scout Camp course several times as a parent helper. Kids definitely slip, slide & do not hesitate at the jump like I do.....

I dont think ive ever been to a job over the years where a Multi agency talk group was used..

ANy one ?

Used often for SES major incidents where multi-agencies are involved (eg glenelg flood, virginia flood, onkaparinga george search, etc). I believe originally designed so that responders to country RCR incidents could all talk together without using three different talkgroups on the GRN towers.

Muti-agency talkgroups were definitely used during Black Tuesday as part of the command & control structure via SEOC (State Emergency Operations Centre).

Country Fire Service / Re: portable radios
« on: February 23, 2006, 09:58:47 AM »
Due to being an EMA brigade we have 2 x GRN portables and 3 x VHF portables on each truck.

This is due to the fact MFS dont have VHF so we have to give them one when we get to the scene and the fact that we have to be on our GRN talkgroup + be on MFS GRN 150 + MFS GRN fireground channel.

For the MFS & CFS dual response type incident, why can't a multi-agency talkgroup be requested via SCC & then SAPOL Commcen ?

Then everyone is using the same GRN talkgroup at the incident without having to handle three GRN physical radio's.

Interested to mearn more about CFS SOP's, thus the question.

Coopers!

A true SA beer!

If your drinking anything else (apart from your mates home brew) then you ain't South Australia :-D

I agree....but funny that all of my mates when I was a teenager thought the same about West End Export beer until SA Brewery sold to Lion Nathan.

My son tried to buy Coopers Pale from a town on the Great Ocean Road durng January. The shop was very expensive except for Vic Bitter. I think he converted to Crown Lager that trip.

Incident Operations / Grape spills
« on: February 21, 2006, 09:58:47 AM »
I have seen many GRN pager messages on the website lately like below:

11:09:33 21-02-06 SHQ: CFSRES MOOROOK RESPOND GRAPE SPILL, STURT HWY, MOOROOK, LOXTON TURNOFF INTERSECTION

What would be involved for the crew to do in this incident ?
Do they hose off the road to prevent slip ? Do they try to bury the remains before the grapes ferment ?

Is this a large truck size spill or trailer on a tractor ?

The taskings seem to be always in the riverland, but not McLaren Vale, Barossa or Coonawarra regions ? Any reason why ?

Always curious & wanting to learn new things....thanks.

« on: February 17, 2006, 07:59:28 AM »
.... just put the portable on the boat and away you go....

Would salty sea water being pumped through any pump have potential to cause damage ? For that matter, does dirty flood water cause pump damage in the long term ?

I know that clean water pumped through a pump and hoses after a job is part of general maintenance and testing, but should we be doing anything else ?

I was in Mt Gambier Blue Lake Caravan Park over Australia Day holiday. Small fire in the pine plantation opposite the caravan park gave me an insight into the fireking's operating.

Awsome size of the fireking trucks when two arrived to extinguish the fire. Multiple MFS, SAPOL, CFS and Forestry vehicles also on site.

Photographs takens with a film camera (I am a bit behind current technology ). The camera's film is being processed now, so will scan and publish photos when I get them.

MMMMMMMMMMM  you know i miss the RCR at the state comps, bring it back and you never know more people may start showing up at the comps......

What is the main differences with holding the RCR Comps within CFS State Comps or a combined competition ? I admit I have never been to a CFS State Comps so this is a genuine question to update my knowledge.

Thanks,

On http://www.2007wpfg.com/theGames/eligibility.cfm in dot point 6 it says "be a member of an eligible agency" which I have posted earlier.

I need to speak to the 2006 SAPES organisers today regards a 'tug of war' team. They are the same people organising the 2007 WPFG, so I will ask.

Let you know soon.

Country Fire Service / Re: Tree on the road.
« on: February 13, 2006, 08:08:03 AM »
We have been trained in asking the caller regards size of the tree or limb. Most people cannot estimate size very well (myself included).

So we actually ask 'could you hug the tree trunk or limb ?' and 'how many steps from one end to the other ?'.

The tree hug question normally gives a stunned silence and works in concentrating the caller on specifics, rather than details in how the tree fell. If they can hug the tree, then about 1m diameter or less.

We estimate each step to be 0.8m in length.

Always a problem to allocate time to get specifics of the task compared to limit the time taken to answer the call so that you can answer the next telephone.

But the more information you can give the crew, the better.

Under http://www.industrialcourt.sa.gov.au/frameset.php?location=12

Type the word FIRE in the search in the "industrial awards catalogue" search box.

After you press the GO button, the link to the 'SA Metropolitan Fire Service - FireFighters and Ancillary Employees Award' document is displayed.

If you click the link the whole award will open as a 33 page PDF document.

I would assume variations to the award would have been done since 1989 when the award document was made legal. SO...

Have a look at http://www.samfs.sa.gov.au/ Saw some stuff under recruitment.

The UFU can be accessed at http://www.ufua.asn.au/section/24.html

Hope this helps....by the way google.com.au is a fantastic search facility if you can chuck the rubbish out that internet search results can give you.

....Going slight offtopic for a moment here.. for the 2007 World Police and Fire Games.. I had a look at the eligibility for it (http://www.2007wpfg.com/theGames/eligibility.cfm) and it seems that CFS Volunteers won't be eligible. Am I the only one that think this sucks? I would of loved to compete against and met some of the other competitiors. Plus I would of loved to try and get an Ice Hockey team together.. Rats.

Yes, I believe you can attend. This is from http://www.2007wpfg.com/theGames/eligibility.cfm towards the bottom of the page.

"Approved Agencies:
If an otherwise qualified Law Enforcement Officer or Firefighter is employed by one of the following agencies or their equivalent, he/she is eligible to compete in the WPFG. "Equivalent" means: any duly organised governmental sub-division such as municipal, provincial/state, national, etc.

Municipal, State and National Police Departments/Services
Municipal, County, State and National Fire Departments/Services
County Sheriff's Departments
National and County Marshal's Offices
District Attorney's Investigators
Airport and Harbor/Port Police and Fire Departments
Highway Patrols
National Border Patrols
National Bureaus of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms
National/Federal Bureaus of Investigation
National Customs and Excise Services

Excusing the American terms because it is run by Americans, but I believe the line "Municipal, County, State and National Fire Departments/Services" will allow CFS members in.

I had a look around the site but couldn't find a list of Sports that will be on..

LASKA, go to http://www.sapes.com.au/sportsSchedule/sportsSchedule.cfm which provides a list on competition and event times, with a scroll bar on the right hand side.

If you want to know more about an individual sport, click on the name on the left hand side of the list. This will open a new window with more details on the sport.

In this window, you normally have three titles under the "Sports Schedule" logo. They are "Events", "General Information" and "Sport Coordinators". You can click on each title to view detailed information.

A newsletter from SAPES (January 2006) was issued recently. It has some updated information.

Hope this helps.

.....Unfortunately all calls aren't received in one dept (eg MFS 000), if they were someone could have better control over what service went to what job.

k

---------------------------------
This will be interesting for near metropolitan Adelaide after 20th March 2006. This is the latest announced date when MFS Comm Centre will take over 'day to day' call receipt & dispatch for SES.

If a large event or risk, then SES will take-over own 132500 calls in the new SES SCC. Otherwise MFS will process call.

So for the first time 000 calls can be directed to SES without a third-party involved...and one Comms Centre will take near metro Adelaide calls for CFS, SES & MFS.

Personally I think this will be a test for the SACAD project idea. Will be interesting to monitor the results. 8-)
