Incident Operations / K.I Deployment (28/04/05 - 30/04/05)
« on: May 13, 2005, 06:25:48 PM »
Things have certainly improved from the time we were over there a couple of years ago and got sent to a rat infested hall at Karratta in the middle of the night, then when we all complained about the bird crap on the floor and the vermin running around us we were bussed to the local school at Kingscote to sleep on floor of the basketball gym.

That was the night after we slept in the toilets and changerooms of the Parndana footy club.

Those were the days...

It's excellent, also has some of the old favourites like 'Getting on with the job' and some Ash Wednesday vision on it.

The Pro 31 and Pro 39 will not work on the SAGRN, best bet is to try and find a second hand UBC780 on Ebay or wait a month or so for a new model to be released from Uniden (UBCT8).

All Equipment discussion / Mount Barker Pumper
« on: April 27, 2005, 06:17:32 PM »
Interesting to read in the Eastern Courier messenger today that Burnside are to get a new appliance this year, apparently their prototype 24 is to go to Greenhill CFS. Also mentions that negotiations are underway to replace the Pumper next year.

Any ideas on what the 24 will be replaced with ??

As GT said, they're a very pro-active group with lots of money.

I enquired about purchasing O2 for our appliance recently and was told by Region 1 that the rollout of a number of O2 kits for all RCR brigades in the Region had been put on hold, once that is sorted out there may be an opportunity for other brigades to also carry a kit.

I took the photo, it's actually Clarendon 34 (when they had it) at a burnoff.

All Equipment discussion / new level 3 gear (LION)
« on: March 05, 2005, 05:17:54 PM »
Here is a pic of the PBI Gold that we trialed in February 2004, our guys at the time thought this was not the best out of the three types we trialed, but still better than what we have none the less.

The extra pockets inside the coat and the hook for keys are a good idea, however that was all part of the spec given to the manufacturers by CFS / MFS. It is going to be obviously warmer to work in than what we currently have but I'm sure the benefits of increased protection are going to outweigh the negatives, having said that it is not an easy task to get the liners in and out though, give yourself a good five minutes.

Apparently the final product is slightly different to what we had in the trial.

I believe that with the zoning system you cannot have two adjacent brigades with the same last two digits in the system, otherwise the computer can't handle dual response of CFS brigades. This is why Seaford are in the system as 8334 even though they don't have a 34 appliance.

Previously all EMA brigades (except rescue trucks) were just in the system as a 1 pump - eg 811 was Morphett Vale, 801 was Happy Valley.

All Equipment discussion / CAFS
« on: February 17, 2005, 03:27:56 PM »
Morphett Vale has had a Darley Snuffer CAFS unit on its' 14 since 1999, it responds to all rural incidents during fire season as well as car fires and second alarm structure jobs. It handles any A class fire brilliantly, although it only has a 400 litre water tank it generally last about 10 minutes, further to that our brigade S.O.P.s state that it generally has a 'big' truck working with it to continue the water supply.

CAFS is great for quick knock down of fires and assists in mopping up hugely, there is lots of research and info available on the net to help prove that.

Any time someone wants a demo of our unit just ask.  :P

Incident Operations / Media Helicopters and Multi Agency Talkgroups
« on: January 21, 2005, 06:31:47 PM »
Katrina, you're correct - the media helicopters have been succesfull in a couple of search operations in the past, however normally the only communications they have is a mobile phone or the air band radio, I think the Nine machine (VH-NWS) also has a UHF CB which probably could have been handy in your instance. I know some media helicopters in other states have access to emergency service radios, not so here though.

Re the M.A. talkgroups, I read recently that if you are using a M.A. talkgroup it is ok for the base or co-ordinating station to use the M.A. talkgroup for comm's. Alternatively you could try getting a command car to the job and use the two GRN radios they have.
