Title: Good Food
Post by: PF_ on March 02, 2006, 03:40:13 PM
CFS is all over the state and people have been all over the state.  So where are the best hot spots for food?

As mentioned in a serious topic (dont wanna clog it up) Tailem Bend chicken and chip shop is the best!  Also for the best burger with the lot go to Lyndoch with Birdwood a close runner up. :-)

The Clarendon Bakery rocks (so does the Royal Oak Hotel just up the road), also the Port Elliot Bakery is always worth stopping at.

OK, the Wirrabarra Bakery which has just moved to the next town (can't remember which) makes incredible gourmet pies in a wood oven.

I reckon the chicken one had half a chook in it!

I'm with mattb, the Clrendon bakery is awesome, real cream in the buns :-D also the Salt Creek roadhouse (and that's Salt Creek south of Meningie, not one of the other three or four Salt Creeks around the place) does the biggest steak sangas i have seen. Half a cow and load her up with everything else you can think of!!

Speaking of real cream, Angaston Bakery Kitchener Buns are REAL!  (unlike all other places that sell them, I swear some are made of plastic)

Little bakery in a side street of goolwa just off the main street, you would be hard pressed to find better stuff than there. Custard berliners are made with a mixture of custard and real cream ARGGGGGGG......

Mmmmmmm - but theres nothing like a farmer union iced coffee and a Balfour's Custard Tart - allways good and always consistant no matter where you go in the state 8-)

Or for any time when the sun is past the yard arm - a cold Coopers

How mich did they pay you for that advertising :-P

Cant fault Farmers Union or Balfours.

Nil payment!

Think Coopers could though - I'm a walking bilboard that their products are good (although not sure they want to advertise a great beer gut :-D :-D :-D)

im quite fond of the full range of coopers beers... have to admit my favourite drink at the moment is tooheys extra dry, although sometimes it presents problems in communication at pubs when ya ask for a "teds" gets quite a few dull expressions from bar-maids

as far as food in the hills you can't go past 2 places, the bakery in balhannah(my pie actually had more meat than gravy!!) and the crafers chicken shop (good food AND you get a discount if you prove you're in the CFS!

Dont bag STC food, theres some tough units up there that'll put your lights out...or poison your food. hahaha

yeah, i'm still yet to go there. is it true that its one of the best training facilities in australia?
Title: Re: Good Food
Post by: oz fire on March 20, 2006, 02:21:03 PM
There new slogan should be "Where the filtered hell are you"

Yes it is definitely one of the best facilities in Australia.

Great range of training facilities/props/sites - with just about everything fire/rescue/emergency services could need and better still probally the most environmentally conscious facilities around. The only thing it misses is a rubble pile (there are heaps there just not for training he he)

Truly a sensational facility and the foods great too  :-D :-D :-D

Maybe it was because I had been on a kayak camp on the Murray for a week with not the best food, go the Trangia, but Mt Pleasent bakery had the best pasty I ever ate.  Even had two.  Need to go back there one day and get another one.

Now this if funny - just wrote in the new Australian Ad campaign slogan - see above and the 'system' has filtered it!!!!

Not even the pommy government could stop it being used!

Either this is bureaucracy at its slowest (trying to catch up with the advertising world) or a highly inefficient filtering system that is also years behind :-D :-D :-D

Either way - great laugh for first thing in the morning!!!!!!!!!

it seems to have closed down, was shut with a sign on the door last friday when I went there anywhere!

PS why the hell is "h-e-1-1" a banned word? are we all assumed to be yanks with their weird ideas of "bad" words?

yeah loosen the noose, firefrog!

i don't think crafers chook shop is closed down, it looked pretty open the other day. it does have weird open times though. for some reason i think theres one weekday where its not open at all.

good chicken though, yeah we got some heavily discounted stuff for a first aid course at the station. i think we've gotten food there on the way back from a strike team as well.

P F, just wear a CFS shirt, theres enough lighter wielding psychos out there already!

the sign on the window said it was for sale and it was all locked up but according to the opening times on the door it should have been open.

you don't need the t-shirt, I just ask for CFS discount and get it.

I travel to Bordertown to do a few jobs here and there and I don't think you can beat the bakery opposite the police station.

Great pies and pasties!!

One in main street of Penola is good too!

I went there again the other day and it was open again. The deal is that the place is up for sale and if not sold by the end of May will close for good, but until then is back open as normal.

"yeah, i'll have the pumper chicken roll, and a 14 size bag of chips"
"the 24 size is only a dollar more"
"na, i'm right. oh by the way, i'll have some hotpad chilli sauce too"

Ah so this is who I have to blame for reopening this thread and making me read through all these food and beer adverts in the middle of the night. Now I'm hungry and thirsty!!!
I say the best pasties are at Cafe on the Park in Penola (but I'm slightly biased because I do work there sometimes - but they are still the best) owned at the moment by another CFS member (Leanne - Comms)but unfortunately she has the place on the market. Bit hard to keep battling Leukaemia and running a cafe 7 days a week. Anyone want to buy a cafe???
