Yep, when we get retrievals up here its the whole road show RAH or FMC retrieval crew ,like Bored said to provide Intensive Care (but they dont happen that often), but in most cases the RFDS flyouts (prob 2-3 a week) are just a RFDS nurse, due to the fact the patient needs services RDMC cant provide but doesn't need Intensive Care or treatment.

We have had the same pressure relief valve put into our Aux pump, hasn't had any dramas since (touch wood), it sounds as if the electrical / pto problems are standard with the URPs. I wouldn't be so bad if we were close to the metro area, but the closest form of civilisation is 2.5hrs away so its a pain in the back side when something goes wrong. As for the highway don't get me started had to drive the thing 180 kms to a job in Glendambo and into a headwind 85kms the whole way. Cheers for the feedback.

SAMFS / Re: RECRUITMENT 2008
« on: March 14, 2008, 04:09:13 PM »

Thats a different situation to what I witnessed last year. I completed my PAT 1 and one person who was missing on the role call was late and ran in the third session after me. I guess for you Fire_Rescue it is sad that your dream has ended, but its good that SAMFS has set a hard line in their recruitment to be equal to all that apply.

Thats my line of thinking gilly, im no Dr or ICP, even Paramedic, just plain old boring BEC Cert 4, gather DOLAR & AMPLE, make an assessment, treat , then transport to better medical help. (That being the nearest Paramedic is 2.5Hrs away and the need for us to get the patient to the Hosp/Dr is of the up most importance)

Dont even think many searches would be done with guidelines (depending of the size of structure), if any primary searches are done its just with HP lines in most instances.

Sat phone, cause if we get comms 20km away from town its a Fing miracle.

Whats the big deal about stokes litters, they are old, heavy & space consuming, there is better equipment for rescue than stokes. Just my thoughts.

All Equipment discussion / URP Problems
« on: March 11, 2008, 12:41:31 PM »
Not sure how many people on here have had much exposure to the URP (Urban Rural Pumper) but ours seems to always have something go wrong with it, we have had to fix the Aux pump twice, the PTO throttle wont pop out once engaged, last week the truck wouldn't start due to what seemed a flat battery but the truck charger is fine, battery is fine and it is charging when running ok and a heap of other little things that dont affect the truck being used ie pump lights etc.

Has anyone with this truck had similar problems and have they experienced other problems.

Its a long turn around for us to send the truck away for repairs so if any one has any suggestions to quick fixes or things to look for when doing truck / equipment checks.

SA Firefighter General / Re: Future Technology in the Fire Service
« on: March 10, 2008, 01:10:20 PM »
I think we should start with the basics, BAs cylinders need to be upgraded, i think the sets are ok for the time being but in saying that i think we need masks with inbuilt mics / earphone, TICs maybe not for every brigade but strategical placed within groups.

Now lets go overboard
Better trucks for EMA brigades that will be called upon to do COQ in MFS area with those trucks having Rapid Intervention Gear , BA seats, TICs, Basic Hazmat Gear, MDTs, every EMA brigade member trained in RCR/HAZMAT/BA/CFB.

Way out there in to the future and quite stupid really but here goes,
Robots that we can control from outside a structure to do Primary S&R & structure integrity checks. I like the heads up display idea let do it, Trucks built out of the same material that the space shuttle is made out of, with remote monitors, 5000ltr tanks so we can tackle fire fronts head on and not get burned. Laser cutters for RCR, Closed circuit BAs that we can wear for hours but the air doesn't get that filtered hot that you feel like you have been in a burnover (yes im talking to you drager BG4) and now im going to wake up and come back to reality.

How does that song go DREAMER, NOTHING BUT A DREAMER......

Ill give it a crack Knackers, only have Cert 4BEC but ill give it a go. O2 @ 8lpm, Dot him up on the MRX cause HR/BP high, monitor & ascertain rhythm, if ok run with some pain relief (something better than penthrox),monitor BP/HR, make sure pain relief is working, if so make him comfortable, then transport to RDMC.

Not sure if im close, but if you or matrix can give some feedback that be cool.

I agree with Matt & Camo people need to stop hiding behind aliases, if people not using there real names believe there opinions and criticisms are so correct and valid then they shouldn't be afraid to show there true name.

My knowledge of the research is pretty limited - there was an article in the latest Volunteer though, so have a squiz at that if you've still got it floating about.

I beleive they've already done a number of burns in Ngarkat, assessing fire behaviour & heat in that environment. Aus & Kiwi reasearchers. Essentially endeavouring to better understand fire behaviour.

A fire is a fire, after all. Regardless of whether it's intended or an emergency!
I heard (though can't vouch for accuracy) that temperatures recorded during the 'cold burns' were higher than they were expecting to encounter during this summer burn.

Your pretty much on the money, they do grid burns (i think 500mtr x 500mtr grids) in differing vegetation and fuel loads checking and testing for everything, rate of spread in certain time frames, temps, flame heights / widths and they have smoke monitoring equipment to see whats substances are in the smoke.
