Title: Multiple fires caused by a dry lightning storm
Post by: Robert-Robert34 on November 28, 2006, 08:36:05 PM
Ok everyone heres another hypothetical for you

Time:11:00am

A band of slow moving dry lightning storms move across the state now while the majority of strikes are cloud-cloud half a dozen manage to reach the ground and start fires in more than one spot

There is significant fire already occurring in scrub land just outside of Mount Gambier at the time of this dry lightning storm with crews already committed to the fire there is a shortage of brigades to respond to reported lightning strikes

However despite a shortage in brigades there are farm units & private forest company units who arent involved with this available for dispatch to the lightning strikes

These private forest companies are

G&R
Moreland Holdings
Dohnts
Tabeel Trading
Mc Donald logging
Woakwine
ITC
Timbercorp
Green Triangle Forest Products

Each of these companies have their own fire crews..... since there are multiple lightning strike fires in Kalangadoo,Beachport,Penola and outside of Mount Gambier close to SEAC park where you would dispatch each forest company too

Also as an added bonus you have assistance of a water bomber and several farm units so take that into account

Robert, firstly what is the temp   ----  r/h---- wind direction and speed--- where outside of the mount is the fire north.south.east.west  what appliances do the private forest companys have and how many firefighters and why only one bomber we always have two........

Temp:39 degrees
RH:8 percent
Wind Direction:N-NW 35 kms/hr
Location of scrub fire:Telford Scrub

The first 4 forestry companies have 14 units and tankers, Woakwine,GTFP,Timbercorp & ITC have 2x34sor24s as well as several 14 units...each company's fire units are crewed by their employees & contractors

Both bombers were initally dispatched to the telford scrub fire but one was re-routed to respond to a lightning strike fire

Would the RH be that low if a lightning storm had just gone thru?

Either way despatch them as necessary. truck to each fire until they are all gone.

Firstly CFS is the combatant authority for fires so CFS brigades would be paged first, and if group already committed next adjoining group would be responded.

Secondly are these private firefighting units listed as a group resource, and how would they be responded if they dont have pagers, communications with CFS etc.

Even though im the creator of this topic heres my opinion of where each unit would be allocated for lightning strike fires

Beachport:Woakwine 2 x 14 units and a 34 (pending on size of fire)
Penola:Timbercorp 1 x14 unit & 2x 24 units
Kalangadoo:ITC,Dohnts 3 x 14 units (2 from ITC and 1 from Dohnts)
Mount Gambier: GTFP,Tabeel Trading & Moreland Holdings 5 x 14 units (3 from GTFP and 1 each from the other 2 companies) as well as a tanker and couple of 34's from GTFP

Pending on access to water supplies G&R and Mc Donald logging would be utilized for water tanker duties

In regards to you question SA Firey the mentioned forestry companies are asked to provide water tankers at fires where CFS are involved and have UHF CB's in their vehicles to contact CFS on

The way you have worded this indicates there are no CFS available to respond to further outbreaks, hence the private units so if there are no CFS responding how will they be dispatched.

Easy RC5 to request strike teams immediately to facilitate less time at incidents and quicker mopup. :-D

That is so true Camo but at least its good to have additional resources in the South East like farm units n private forest companies incase a bad day does happen

I dont know about Kalangadoo or any other areas but around Gambier farm fire units are virtually none!

Can we please get back on the topic people  the fire that Tantanoola had today pulled out every resource you can think of this includes some of the private forestry companies mentioned as resources in this hypothetical

Its true cause Moreland Holdings had a fire tanker, Mcdonald logging  had a couple of vehicles helping out and GTFP was also there

I think this Hypothetical is no longer a hypothetical. What I have noticed a lot this year is a fire breaking out and strike teams from every where comming from every where because someone gets scared then crews gett pissed off that all they leave work family and everything else to go and do absoultly nothing.

I know it is better to stop a fire early but by the end of the season we are going to have lots of trouble crewing if people kept getting called to do nothing .

The fire at Springton was a very good example of this standing around all night with no firea at all.

Brigade Training Officer's job

well yes and no, really everyone is responsible for themselves.  The fact the burnover training is mandatory was no secret, it was discussed on here for one thing.
