Sorry to continue taking this threat off the topic, but SES is not alone!

There have been many instances in the past where both CFS and MFS have failed to take a stop and continued P1 to the incident .... just in case!

(Actually sounds like a Group Officer or two I know   )

SA Firefighter General / Driver Age
« on: April 20, 2006, 09:12:58 AM »
There was a debate this morning on TV about raising the driving age and standardising 18 Australia wide!

What do people think?

My view - great idea. I may be generalising, however it is interesting that the 16 - 25 age group make up a little less than 15% of the population, however account for in excess of 35% of accidents and 45% of serious accidents (sourced from MAC). I personally have attended numerous accidents and an increasing number of serious/fatals where inexperience and age have been the major factor!

After all you need to be 18 to vote and 18 to drink - yet you can openly drive (with a passenger) a one tonne steel machine on populated roads from 16 with little instruction.

The other side to the argument is - Who should be responsible for young drivers education and the vehicle they drive. Maybe a standard in education and restriction in vehicle types is the answer (similar to motor bikes)

Now before people get fired up ... I am not having a go at anyone, however this is a serious issue and as emergency service workers something that we should have an open and honest opinion on!

All the best CaptCorn - hopefully the process won't be too much of a burden!

It would be nice to think that CFS may put together a paper on the lessons learned from this process - both the process in the coroners court (what can, will or could happen and how they operate) and also a rap up on proceedings and the lessons to be learned by all of CFS (and other agencies)

Would prevent Chinese whispers and the typical CFS grape vine (yea I know ...... dreaming now) but also allow those who have been through the process to put it behind them and not have to keep reliving the stories as curious members ask.

Once this turned into a working job all cadets where removed from the site and taken back to Naracoorte fire station(as per SOPS)...The CFA guys in the hole are firefighter from Horsham.. they must have a lot of bad luck in that Horsham brigade.. story in the cfa fireman,a member of horsham brigade was woken to the sound of his pager going off in the wee small hours.. Turns out his house was on fire and if the police did not spot the fire he and his partner would have been in strive... see pagers are good for some things in the middle of the night.....

Thats a great gentle reminder for us all to practice what we preach - smoke alarms save lives - install adjacent to all sleeping areas and in all living areas :-)

Now wouldn't a common frequency/talk group be a great idea - could then transmit a direct stop and pass on any relevant info - similar to what occurs in EMA fire service areas - that way the officer of the incoming vehicle can make a valued judgment if they need to continue - sorry for being logical!

CEO is the top of the agency and a title for all business, CO is more of an operational rank - I believe Euan Ferguson holds both titles - as did Stuart Ellis :-)

What ahve they got to hide :-P

But seriously, the police pull people over anyway for RBT so they dont have a choice and the ones that would bypass it are the drunks that cause the accidents anyway... :|

A combination of driver reviver and police checks (weights, defects, road worthiness, loads, registration, rbt etc) was trailed many years ago at the weigh bridge in Pt August on a long weekend! We heard about it on the UHF back down near Pt Wakefield and already cars, trucks and everyone else listening was looking for alternative routes to by pass the delay, hold up and inconvenience.

Driver reviver is proactive and positive community action - rbt is not, it's purely law enforcement!

Zip up leather boots provide far greater foot and ankle support than rubber/leather calf length fire fighting boots!

As I said, have worn both and have both however for everything bar flooding the leather zip up ankle style boots are far superior - hence I guess why CFS chose that style out of the many different types that were trial and used prior to a standard being reached :-D

Have a pair in my crew bag (had them for years), when the pager went, got to the station, got dressed and put them on my feet - then got on the truck, got to the incident, was assigned BA crew ..... the rest is history!

The smart thing to do would have the driver reviver and breathalyser in the same place, then he cops get their drunks and CFS can give out cake and coffee. win win. :-)

Yep - that would only happen once - after that the word would spread and people would rarely stop at a driver reviver in fear of police RBT, car inspection etc, etc, etc.

Much better keeping them seperate - by a lot more than 200 meters!

One big difference is the area members respond to the shed/unit/station/etc from.
CFS might pull in from a 2-3 Km area, while some SES units pull members from up to 20 Km away. I pass through 4 CFS areas before I get to my shed.
\

That is the difference that people forget - most CFS brigades (Urban and township) have a response time and look for members to aid them in meeting that - however we also need to look at rural areas, where CFS must draw its crews from far and wide to crew a truck - then we also can't make the 4 - 6 minutes - same as SES who draw their crews from far and wide!!!!!!

On an aside - watch the pager site and then monitor the radio - CFS brigades may confirm within 4 - 6, but how many are actually on the road, everytime within that 4 - 6 minutes ...............

I have worn both the structural and rural (leather lace/zip combination) boots - for a range on incidents - both rural, structural and training. Ultimately in the terrain of the Adelaide Hills there (for me at least) was little difference between them.

I have also worn the pull up rubber boots (Skellerup fire fighters) - and won't go back to them in a hurry - except in winter in flooding incidents (I like dry, warm feet) I have worn these several times in Compartment training and cooked my feet hence now back to the trusted, tested and proven leather combination with zips! Also wore the rubbers at a structure fire - everything except my feet got wet, but walking through and across debris was an uneasy feeling!

The leather lace/zip combo have my tried and tested vote anyday!

I have heard there are some issues coming now from the cyclone that hit north queensland - in the first few days people were preparing (response agencies - firies and SES) and a few employers had issues!

Once it was declared a disaster area, those problems vanished and the volunteers/retainees where protected!

However can't get anyone up that way to tell me what legislation this comes from ...... will keep searching!

Yellow cross fires for rescue!
Green wildfires for most jobs (trick to getting the green out, soak them for a while and let them dry before wearing for the first time)
Yellows (can't remember brand) for structural

The appliance numbers would make sense - 29 is same as CFS for rescue and mfs 9 and from my understanding no metro SES units have any RCR capabilities???
