Country Fire Service / Re: Innovations
« on: October 28, 2006, 09:13:25 AM »
I wouldn't see a properly set up innovation committee as ignoring the chain of command......but a proper channel for ideas to go...

Chain of command is something that really peeves me......people seem to use it as an excuse not to pass relevant info along, of to stop others from actually doing something.

Chain of command, in my opinion, is about who answers to who, within an operational environment.

Outside of the Operations, there is an appropriate procedure to follow, as to who to speak to about what...but it doesn't necessarily follow that you must speak to your Captain, who must speak to the Group officer, who must speak to the Regional Officer etc.....

This is not to say you ignore everyone, and go straight to the chief for any issue that you see, BUT if you set up an appropriate committee, you can make it clear that individuals can present info direct to the committee, without stepping on the toes of the so called "chain of command"

Pip

I agree to that. I think i put my words badly

In our brigade we only have rather old brass 38 & 64 branches. I was wondering what model and brand most other brigades use that are less thatn 2 or so years old.

That goes back to how the SES respond, their response times and the fact that they aern't as common as CFS. which has been discusses elsewhere

So essentialy it is jumping the chain of command.

But it is probarly a good idea as there are various sugestions that I have made in my brigade that ae supported by the yonger membars of the brigade but shot down by the older members for no real reason other than it is diffrent from the way it has been done in the past. it also means that more peope hear of the idea faster and thoughts aern't contained to the brigade.

This would be very good if it is able to make individual brigades get their ideas into the field. But of course where is the money  going to come from?

Hang on isn't the MFS adimently saying that they don't want to be involved in the politics of dispatching brigades?

Isn't this also a very good benifit of getting SACAD that the computer will take into account many variables and dispatch whoever can get the requied resources their fastest. In an ideal world we as FF's would acknowlage that our job is to protect lives and do the job. It is sad that getting more calls to your brigade name brings some benifits eg funding and being noticed. The ability to remove a large ammount of human control from the dispatch center will be good.

In BFF1 we got advised to basicly do the same. Throught winter i tried to always have a thick wollen jumper mainly for warmth under proban.
Members of my brigade say you have to waere something to protect from steam burns.

Remove the crew deck or shift it to the back and put the water tank right against the cab?

I don't have it as I haven't done BA yet but our brigade uses it for everything where BA might be used as well.

I have been told a cold wash no soap gets it a bit cleaner.

if you are wating for Nomex does that menat that everyone should have a set of nomex. my brigade only has Nomex for BA waiting for PBI and everyone else has Proban.

I think the MFS have done quite a good job untill their normal brigades are out of action. And then CFS groups and politics comes into play. it will be good when the new computer based system come into action and then most of the human side is taken out of the equation.

The flexibility of many bombers is possibly more useful than one large one. of coure it depends on the fire. ie. in the US with the large forrest and crown fires big bombers like the 747 and skycrane are probarly more useful than the smaler types we use.

So in a current rescue what do you get? I assume that all rescue brigades don't get a full complement of rams and everything else.

yes it is very effective especially when CFB training can be used to its full potential. But as safty is the priority and the entire top floor is alight I would be very cautious about sending crews into it.

It would be good to have similar or the same accross the state but then there would be no new development in the annnual batches of trucks.

Other that a Hino and roller doors are there any other major diffrences in New 34s?

I think we should come up wit hsome trucks like Picadilly Summertown and Bridgewater 14 as they are a smaller and yet have more space than the utes.

I agree it would be good to see more CAFS on CFS trucks

acording to an article in Australian Aviation about the Airport fier service at Sydney you have approx 3 min to put the fire out for any hope of survivors.

Back on point Why not give the Brigades with heavy RCR or in the response zones of airstrips some basic tranning.
