SASES / Re: Queensland floods
« on: January 13, 2011, 12:14:40 PM »
What about the fact that QLD will need crews for a sustaind period of time.  SO sending small contingents will mean that we can offer help for a longer period and each deployment ony has 30 mouths to feed and beds to find rather than 1 lot of 100 or so.

Also it enables vollies to arrange time off work more as they could fesably be asked to deploy in 8 days time which allows them to sort out their SA jobs etc..

Still it is a lot of water.

It is a SAwater requerment to prevent us pumping into their mains and breaking stuff.....

YOu would have to be kind dumb to pump down a hydrant... could be fun tho  :-D :-P :-P

I think the problem doesn;t lie with the group officers in terms of making the right descions.

but the link between the GO and the captains then the brigade members on the way down the chain.......

I agree that appropriate stowage is important....

But when the CFSVA puts their voice into things like the this they get completely shot down by the Group officers who don't want them to worry about operational issues. So how about you all go to your group officers and say that you want them to let the CFSVA discuss and express opinion on operational matters.

On the other hand is are you CFSVA reps the people you want making operational decisions?

No i wasn't going to suggest that but It helps when you complain about these things to be able to say I was at the last meeting and listened the reports.

There is only 1 staff member in the CFSVA there should probably be more.

FYI the CFSVA hasn't' released how their 1.8M is going to be used so know one really knows yet so how about we wait and see.

And we are all ignoring other things that they have got pretty much done such as the exemption form driver fatigue laws, the 25kph past emergency vehicles which is now just getting final paper work done. As well as continual pressure on Adelaide fire to improve there act which hasn't always been adequate for CFS.

SAAS / Re: Graduate paramedics
« on: October 27, 2010, 08:18:10 PM »
This is a good thread, i am not in and emergency service in a paid role and i kinda get the dream of not wanting a dull job and doing cool stuff etc. Remember it isn't so much about what you are doing ( that  does count) but who you work with. Also every job has its bad/boring bits and SAAS/MFS... .will be no different.

Emergency Vehicles / Re: New CFS QRV's

Can somone explain this "not beign able to fill the truck from the inlets" does this mean you can;t realistically relay?  So far all the hydrant fills i have come accross are extra baggage on the truck and If you are taught how to pump properly use the real inlets.

Hypotheticals / Re: Domestic Response
« on: October 11, 2010, 01:11:31 PM »
ALEX, its good to use SOP'S but we still need to get more information out of the caller,They may report a fire being south or east when in fact its north and over 40kms away..I know its hard to drag information out of callers but when you have a hwy that spans some 300 or so Kms does make life hard.....

Dont get me wrong SOP'S have there place .....

Sometimes Callers are jsut plain Wrong. But still If the domestic fire is street A or street B whats the diffrence excepte maybe a BWC.

We hope for a 2 stacion and hence 2 appliance response but sometimes Alerts will change this and more often than no XXX42 will result in all the kings men.

I saw the trailier at the show and it had a brilliant setup to prepare for bushfires, but I was highly dissapointes by the complete abscence of anything to mention all the other work we do.

http://www.abs.gov.au/AUSSTATS/[email protected]/mf/7122.0.55.001/

currently there is at least 3 mill more in AUS than last year not 3 mil isn't much in the world scheme of things also it was only a few weeks ago that wheat APW was about $100 less than what it is now.

and as much as i like this stuff i'll shut up now  :-D

Country Fire Service / Re: Is this a sign for the future ?
« on: August 03, 2010, 01:37:58 PM »
The outcome of this will be intresting.

The issue for almost the entire victor harbour group is that the people live in teh town and the fire stations are out of the town. There has been intense recruitment advertising within victor for the last few years now. Perhaps putting a CFS station in or on the edge of the town would be a good move ending up with a similar system to say Woomera.

SA Firefighter General / Re: Incident Type Protocol?
« on: June 30, 2010, 10:31:47 PM »
Well having more types would be a good thing four sure, as long as the appropriate standard of response is maintained .eg "fuse box fire" should have hte same as "domestic fire"since that is a likely out come. not always but frequent enough.

SA Firefighter General / Re: Incident Type Protocol?
« on: June 28, 2010, 07:19:51 PM »
Interesting point, I am one to err on the side of lets sent to many than too few and would rather arrive to find a smoke in area that is really a substantial fire with more resources.  So is there anything wrong with that?

And the Number of incident types? well If the type "smoke alarm" existed what would you think is an appropriate response? If it is working that could be anything from toast to a going fire so how would you write a response SOP? (yes i do acknowledge that in as all these responses are not alarms the caller may have noticed flames etc but lets ignore that atm)

Country Fire Service / Re: Booster Commisioning

oh yeah. doh!

so lets put 3 breaching pieces on each inlet so we can have 4 24s putting water into each line in  :-P

Country Fire Service / Re: Booster Commisioning

About breaching pieces. If you run 2 64mm into a Y then have 1 64 coming out the other side can someone with more knowledge of hydraulics tell em if you get more water out? Or are you still just trying to put an elephant through a car door?

Country Fire Service / Re: Booster Commisioning
« on: June 08, 2010, 07:00:47 PM »
There is a point where I don't expect all volunteers to know everything. But the FIPs i have used are simple enough and the buttons clearly labelled and often there is a manual there as well. GO out and learn the systems in your area but don;t make your crews learn the systems in town if you are not going to be in town. if you train the ideas and theory well you should be able to fit into bigger operations quite well.

than one appliance to a Vehicle Fire? C'MON GUYS... Learn to fight fire!

I assume you are talking about fighting the fire rather than the response SOP? if so yea i agree

SA Firefighter General / Re: Minimum Response Standards.

I'll admit taht my brigade has been somewhat guilty of this at times. For you MFS guys Can;t you say Sorry taht response does not fir the SOP you need to do this or this ? in the end it doesn;t take much for you to page another truck.

what do staff wear more blame for sending non SOP response or tellign volllies to follow SOP?

All Equipment discussion / Re: 34p pump sizes
« on: May 10, 2010, 06:46:23 PM »
ok

Well we just Got a new 34p and really like it :D yes i'll give you that the pump panel and valves are a bit awkward but and the 65mm hoses are a bit squashed and not enough hose  space in general but we can re arrange a few things, yes it would be full with RCR gear. But it is a very Good truck

Bundy? do you get the infralog and are you sending Decent letters to Mr Tindall? I have heard him say many times bot him person and email to send in ideas to I&L. it will work better than here.

Should we really base our trucks on having to boost large multi story buildings? this happens maybe once in 6 years at my count (for CFS)

What is wrong with building CFS appliances so that at a large job each truck runs at a max 2 38mm or 1 64mm? if it is that huge you will want the crews so the trucks will be there any how. also I don;t think SA has many large mains to support the huge pumps. the recent Plastics fire and pool shop fire both had water issues at the main irrelevant of the pump size.
