My guess (after a 8 days straight of work, and a few glasses of wine..) are:

1.  Burnside Pumper
2.  International
3.  A brigade in what was the Mt Barker Group......Mt Barker or Greenhills maybe?

Other Government Agencies / Re: Assisting agencies bushfire training
« on: October 24, 2006, 02:12:03 AM »
Last year, the Police had a traingin package put together by a person who was both in CFS, and SAPol...and the pretty much covered BFF-1 prevent injury, and a bit on fire behavior....which was a lot more than many LSA's had in the previous season....not a bad training package

In Black Tuesday, there were several police officers who (both on & off duty) who just about got themselves cooked..hence the sudden reaction by SAPol to provide some training......but, at least in my LSA, haven't seen any mention of training this year...   :x

Hi Pip,

CFS HQ still do have HF and monitor it, and the fact that you are only 25k's away makes no difference as far as range goes as it works on the ionosphere.

I have used HF a few times...and I am certainly not an expert, BUT from memory, the optimum working range is 400-600 km apart...two HF sets 25km apart is not going to get a particularly good reception (HF at best is a crap reception!)

HF radio operates using the sunspot system which basically means you use high frequencies during the day and low ones at night.
I have used my HF in your area when no phone coverage was available from that lovely bend at the bottom of the hill from your station and works no problems.

State Hazmat vehicle has a Codan HF radio installed in it and numerous groups/brigades up north have it.

How many brigades up north still have their sets / know how to use them.   The ones I have spoken to no longer have the HF sets in their appliances.....or if they do, no one in the brigade knows how to use it!!!

Benefits are HF radio is cheaper to operate than Satellite Phones as there is no monthly fee just a yearly licence fee which is under a $100 which would be a small price to pay for a better system

Bonus is RFDS also monitor the emergency channel 24 hours a day

Speak to Gary Bau at SOCC he might have a HF laying around doing nothing from appliance changeovers

Can someone clarify, does CFS HQ still have / monitor HF radio...I thought I heard something about them being removed, as they were no longer used.....

Just found out the details re Saddleworth 34....it has been repaired, but is currently a spare...Saddleworth CFS have the old Truro 34, until such time as a new replacement arrives for Saddleworth.....

As for other appliance movements, who knows!!!

There you go....my info was slightly different, but perhaps not entirely correct!!

In your post, however, you mention the other major problem facing CFS & new appliances.....that is fitting them in.

Many brigades took delivery of appliances, and when they hightlighted the fact that it wouldn't physically fit, were told "That's your problem"

Some brigades then spent their own funds on rebuilding the station, just so the appliance would fit!!!

Just because (if?) it is an OH & S issue doesn't mean that CFS have to fix the problem...... a problem may be identified, but if it costs too much to fix, it doesn't have to be fixed then & there.....

Don't think HF is much good...no one else in the area has it...and we are in very steep hills...

Not sure if CFS HQ still have HF.....but if they did, we are only 25 km away and not really in the optimum working range for it...

As for Sat phone.....I have only used them out in central Australia, I don't know how well they go in / around pine forests...we have valleys where we loose some GPS coverage...I assume that it would be similar for Sat phones......?

I'd rather spend CFS money on a heater for the station, to stop the dampness, that a sat phone...! :-)

Not sure how much value there is in a TV recruitment campaign.......

Studies done by a researcher from WA looked at why people join volunteer groups.     The main reason they joined was because someone asked them to join.   A very low number (I think around 2%, but that may not be correct), joined because they saw ads on TV.........

In terms of value for money, some specific leaflets, perhaps hand delivered to potential members, is perhaps a far better use of funding.

A number of years ago, my brigade was struggling with members.  With some funding (around $300, and with the assistance of the VSO,) we got some specific leaflets printed up about our brigade, and hand delivered them to everyone in the district (we only have around 100 or so houses in the whole district).

In the following months, we ended up with several new members (which we still retain some 5 or 6 years later)

For us, a small investment by CFS of $300, plus a lot of work by brigade members proved to be  excellent value for money.

You certainly have to question the Government's actions (or lack thereof?) in relation to funding for recruitment programs.  Although I suspect, if you asked them, the answer would be "we have funded the CFS appropriately, and it is up to them to determine how that money is spent."    I don't know enough about how the system works to know if this is the case or not!!

It will be replaced...at some stage in the foreseeable future..... what with is, I believe, still being decided between the relevant parties......!      :-)

what about Riverton 32 and Brinkworth 32 i can tell you now that riverton 32 is still running strong it out runs saddleworth 34 which is the same age.

As I understand it, these are 32's, not Pumpers.....Saddleworth 34 is currently out of service due to crash damage, not specifically its age...

The problem for CFS now is a) funding to replace all the appliances that reach the age limit / break down & need replacement, and b) having enough staff to facilitate / coordinate the process

I think its about time we adopt MFS k-code system as well as use phonetic alphabet when it comes to transmitting info such as fatalities, injuries and other stuff like vehicle regos and so on that way people listening via scanners wont be able to figure out what is being said unless they have MFS k-codes & phonetic alphabet on a sheet infront of them  :-)

And all the real scanner freaks and the media all know what the K-codes are, and the phonetic alphabet, so using them doesn't keep anything secret!!

I use codes at work all the time, but I would hate to see them in CFS....way too confusing, and easily messed up....

It means nothing to you, if you don't know the codes, but if you have the codes in front of you, you will know all of them....

I was referring to most adelaide plains aera where it is mostly flat ground for the 32's to run on and which units are to be replace out of the 32's.

Murray Bridge has just been replaced, Burnside Pumper will be replaced soon, which leaves Cleve 32 / Pumper as the only Pumper in the CFS fleet which is more than about 10 years old (excluding refurbished ones) ....I figure at some stage that will be replaced, but I haven't heard anything about if / when that is going to happen..

Unfortunately these days, the budget must be taken into account - do we get one very expensive chopper (with a running cost of $11,000 per hour ) plus the cost of actually hiring it......or do we spend the same amount of money, but have more than 1 bomber / chopper available?

CFS, like all Government departments has to work smarter with with their money.....   :-)

All Equipment discussion / Re: 'New inventors' warning device
« on: October 22, 2006, 12:39:34 AM »
Whats the point of having a warning device which broadcast warnings on both radio bands when all you need to do is use the PA option on your siren box and speak out through the speaker just like police do

What PA system like the police do...?   I don't recall any patrol cars yelling at drivers through the PA system to get out of the way....   :?

The problem with sirens & modern day cars, is that many of the cars are designed to keep the noise out - and then the occupants crank up the stereo system (radio, CD, DVD, MP3) and there is a difficulty in hearing the oncoming siren.....

I reckon having a system that warns drivers, through their own sound system, is a great idea - particularly in the metro area...not sure how much benefit it is in less populated areas...

I can tell you now the 32 can go any where off road  just as long it is not a step slop they might not have the clearens  or the 4wd set up but they get there and do the job.

Well that rules out almost every fire track, and half the driveways in my area!!

And I recall several years ago, a certain brand new 32 travelled down a fire track within my Group area (against the wishes of the Incident Controller) - and promptly got stuck when a fire snuck up underneath it, and burnt out the air lines....trapping several other appliances further down the track....

The other appliances eventually got out, but 32 was left sitting out by itself overnight, until the mechanic come out the next day...

It would be good to see them bring back the 32's for sum parts of the state where the tall trucks cant get to places cos of size of them but they carrie the same as the 34 the only diff is the drive there is only 3 left in the state.  :| :-D

What is the point in most areas of having a 2wd appliance?   Almost every (all?) CFS brigades have some rural component....having only a 2 wd can limit a brigade's ability to respond to that sort of area.......

And at least 2 of the "32's " (although Pumper is the correct call sign now) will be gone soon....

ALL Rescue / Re: CFS NEW AIRCRAFT RESCUE UNIT
« on: October 19, 2006, 01:40:33 AM »

The only other passenger orientated airports around the state are Mt Gambier, Pt Lincoln & Whyalla.  Which are all covered by MFS who have the RCR capabilities to handle an aircraft rescue.

I would have thought Roxby Downs has a fair bit of air traffic going through it too.....

And isn't North Shields closer to the Lincoln airfield, than the Lincoln MFS?

The National Medal is not a service medal - eg you don't get it just because you have been a member for 15 years.  It is a diligent service medal - to be eligible, you need to do a bit more than just turn up occasionally.

The process for nominating a person is not an onerous task - relevant paperwork available from your Regional Office.   :-)

4 to 6 minutes might be alright for some brigades but an average turnout time where i live is 8-12mins.  And there is nothing we can do about it.  Its just the fact that our crews have to travel so far to the station.

Thats it in a nut shell - we all provide the same service to the community - fire response, just some communities, due to size, geographics and population spread take a little longer to get on the road - and their community accepts that :-D

And if the community doesn't like it, perhaps more of them should put their money where their mouth is, and join themselves!

And you end up with your neighbouring service getting a full set of rescue gear, when you already have the gear...with no checks done in relation to whether or not the gear is required or not......

Grants are great, but really, shouldn't the CFS be better funded, so we don't need to go begging for things that we actually use - like vehicle fridges, TV / DVD players & stuff like that!!

Signal is the same and better in some spots. Alot of Telstra Shop staff have been out driving over the last few days checking out the signal and known blackspots. All in all the coverage is fantastic, there is the odd area that is still abit iffy but they are being logged and will be looked at by the techs.

Cool..when can you come to my area & try out phones? Ifit works in the blackspots in my area, then it will work almost anywhere!!   :-D
