Country Fire Service / Re: Burnside ??

Hahahahahaha, hahahahahaha, hahahahahaha......

You may have heard it from 3 sources but they probably all heard it from same person to start with...

As a member of Burnside and the DGO with Burnside in my portfolio of responsibilities, I can confirm the station is still there, still full of members, appliances still booked online, still training weekly and no one has changed the locks, nor has there been any discussion of such events. Sorry to disappoint but whoever was waiting to bid on Burnside Pumper may just need to find another truck....

not 4 appliances attending.... you must have missed the radio traffic standing 321 down as 329 were closer.... standard MFS response for "RR" incident is 2 MFS appliances (Pump & Rescue, in this case 2 pump/rescue's), being dual response area CFS were also responded... nothing too out of the ordinary about this incident... hope this clarifies.

" Also interesting, Burnside turning themselves out again (before they're paged) for the second time in a few days. Maybe its time someone introduced them to mr pager, not mr scanner. "

Hello,
I'm not sure to take the above as personal offence or someone shooting their mouth off without knowing the full story... Given I was the driver for the first incident (RCR Norton Summit) and Officer for the 2nd (Grass fire Bridgewater) on both Burnside appliances and KNOWING for fact that in fact there wasn't such a scanner present when the brigade was turned out... Maybe you should get your facts straight and if you wish to discuss it further call me 0404 016 520.

All money is "CFS money".... or maybe not...

Just because I work for the government, does that mean the money in my bank account is the governments or mine? Is a brigade is funded money out of the CFS pot of money, ie we need new jackets lets go out and get them, then yes that's CFS money... But if a rigade goes out and raises it's own funds, such as charges for bunoffs, election collection, sausage sizzles  etc. Then that money raised by the BRIGADE VOLUNTEERS should be the money of that bridage, if they wish to purchase good for the benefit of the brigade then there's no problem with that.

If however the money is raised under the banner of "Supporting the CFS" or something similar and then the money gets used for a Hawaii Holiday fund or something then that's a totally different kettle of fish....

So when I go out and spend my time raising funds for my brigade then i expect that money will go to them.... There are plenty of brigades out there who do and would expect to do the same with their fundraising money...

Hi All,

vehicle will have ability to have pump & roll by an aux pump positioned in the drivers side rear lower locker (below hose reel). There will be 3 CABA in cab, 1 being the officer and 2 in the back (next to the doors) with a benchin the middle to be able to carry a crew of 6 total. The main part of the through locker is to be able to carry a ferno 71 litter without putting it on the roof etc... There should be around 6 cubes of locker space at this stage....

"Mob in NZ.. - Make some excellent appliances!"

prob Frazer Fire & Rescue you're talking about. Not sure what Mills-Tui NZ (the origional Burnside Pumper builders) are doing with themselves anymore...

Liquip has also built a number of recent South Australian appliances which look pretty good...

Museum has been suggested but no one knows what might happen to it yet.... Will prob remain in service for a few weeks / months until the new one comes online fully (traning etc) but after that who knows.... would be nice to keep it as is and not turn it into a BWC or traytop, still in pretty good condition though...

Flaked is awesome!

Burnside Pumper has 4 x 64mm (maybe 5 i can't remember) on the roof of reverse lay which works wonders when you're running with a standpipe, plate cover key and turncock key (maybe even a torch!) and you can go a distance of 80 to 100m.... Not to mention you can still do it while the truck is still driving to the job....

Also we run a 64mm with 50mm working length flaked in the hose locker, that too is very simple and easy to use, have used it now at a number of going jobs and would suggest it to anyone with the space....

Normal zip up boots for L1 gear and bunker boots for PBI (at own expense).... At the end of the day if people want to spend their own money of getting their own gear (that doesn't compromise safety) then go for it.... It's what people have been doing with flash hoods and helmet torches for years....

Ok here's the low down from the inside....
1) It will be a truck driven by an engine...
2) Likely to have a number of wheels, some that give the vehicle momentum and some that give it direction...
3) It will have some new technology, it's called a "pump" and designed to move liquid (generally known as H2O) from Point A to Point B...
4) It will have the ability to transfer the above "H2O" from point to point...
5) Likely to have space to the rear of the cabin and before the brake lights to be able to carry equipment to perform what it's required to do...
6) And latest rumour on the street is that it may be fitted with twin 1,000m 12mm "Gardina" technology first attack hose & the brigade is putting in extra funds to have snap lock fittings and branches that comply with water restriction regulations....

I don't know how one vehicle has caused so much opinion and stir and isn't yet even being built... How come say Naracoorte Pumper, Stirling Pumper, Nara Rescue, Ceduna 22 don't get as much recognition, arn't they all one offs?

Burnside run a Ferno 71 style stokes on our Pump Rescue. I'd say it gets used about half a dozen times a year an anger from assist saas patient lifts to MVA's and mountain bikers down in Cleland, very useful piece of kit. Also in regard to "first aid kit" we have purchased backpack style trauma kits and fitted all the required medical gear in them aong with O2 resus, yet again gets used in anger a few times a year....

not inerservice bitchin because i know we all do it sometimes within our services, how often do CFS "Duty Officers" respond P1 to inidents they arn't required at or just to make them "feel important".

But this isn't the first time this driver has done something like this... I've seen him driving P1 up the parade norwood again lights & sirens, hamming down with rain, midday so significant foot traffic, massive risk yet still doing it to none other than... yes a tree down! (on private property no life risk, it's already fallen!)

Can I ask though what training SES receive at a volly & staff level to drive & under what circumstance a P1 is authorised?

You may be here to stay so we will deal with it.... But responding blues and two's when not required is only increasing the risk not only to the crew but also the public thus being around to stay is greatly reduced when you crash responding P1 and it's not required.... not even police went lights and sirens...

and AGAIN....

today to a building impact, SES already had 2 units on scene, MFS were still on scene (and had been for 45 minutes), CFS had been and gone home... The car wasn't going anywhere, ambo's had dealt with any injuries, SAPOL on scene.... NO MORE A LIFE THREAT.... yet an SES commodore is still going lights/sirens through a red light to the same job now 45 minutes old... Is this really required???

What's it going to take to risk manage when lights / sirens are required, or is it going to be a human life to turn around and say WHOOPS!

pardon my ignorance toward land search jobs etc... but given the initial call was just before 3, Norwood patrols had a forward command established on scene shortly after 3, STAR Group & helicopter around 4pm....

Is it really necessary for an SES unit to respond under lights and sirens to this job after 8pm?

Incident Operations / Re: Hazmat - Mylor 24/02/08
« on: February 25, 2008, 01:43:39 AM »
chemical product in a container (believed to be a 20lt) has fallen off the back of a vehicle by the look of it... bounced once and smashed open, due to the chemical contents of it the drum has melted to the surface of the road alng with the road surface having partially melted too... once the runoff reached the grass on the side of the road it started to burn.... As the drum had melted there was nil ID of the product, pH testing was neutral, Micro5 PID showed nothing untoward re product, a few samples were taken (chipped off the roadway) and taken to stirling where 206 came up with the Hazmat ID and the product was tested, I believe the outcome was Formaldahyde as the product.... interesting job...

I have been in a situation where I was approaching a train intersection P1..... I could see the train coming from the left but the driver was hanging out the cabin of the train... there was no boom gates but flashing lights only and he was directing me through, he made it quite clear of what to do so I did.... I could see the train slowing or else I would have stopped.... Interesting to have a train give way to you on a P1...

not having a go at ANY CFS brigade here but why not respond SAMFS as a dual response into CFS area for more incidents... I know people will see it as "Job stealing" but the reality is that NO CFS brigade out there will ever garuntee a crew and that's just the downside of being volunteers but it's a fact. And I for one would sure prefer to stand in front of the coroner saying "We have done everything we could to save this person from their burning house" as opposed to "Sorry Mr Coroner, but it was on our side of the line, I know we didn't get a truck out the door and a red truck was just down the road but it was our area, not my problem they are dead.".....

C/S rescue gear is only a combination of Hazmat Gear and Rope Rescue gear. Maybe consider strategic placement of C/S gear to some hazmat brigades that way serving two roles....

and Bill I'd be interested to know what are the differences between a C/S kit and R/R kit, maybe you could enlighten us?

So for a police officer to drive their vehicles.... a commodore sedan you need to do two weeks of intensive driver training I believe but in the CFS / SES you can turn up and drive a 12 ton truck lights and sirens purely because you have your license??? Anyone else find this a bit odd.....
