All Equipment discussion / Scanner
« on: January 07, 2005, 09:59:54 AM »
Yes you will need a trunk tracker III capabable scanner. Currently there are a few I know of.

Pro 96 (import from the USA) nice handheld
Uniden BC 780xlt base station, Discontinued might still be able to get one if you hunt.
Uniden 246T currently import from the US but may be available in Australia soon. Seems to be a nice handheld.

I would think about waiting till we know for sure if the new uniden is being released here.

Industrial & Private Fire Services / private fire appliances
« on: January 05, 2005, 03:57:47 PM »
This is tough one for me. In the urban fringe many brigades have hardly seen a private unit but further out there are many.
The issues that I can see.
Comms
Clothing
Training
Knowing and then carrying out the incident management plan
Accountablity

Of course it is the locals right to assist and CFS can never protect every property so private units are good in that regard. I just don't know how best to manage them on the fireground.
If the actions of private units didn't have any potential to impact on CFS safety then we could just let them do their thing. But I think some management is needed.
I have a lot of questions few answers. Does anyone have case studies on it working well?

All Equipment discussion / Lion Gear
« on: January 04, 2005, 02:07:06 PM »
It sounds strange that Aus Standard approval would be pending due to SAMFS rolling out the gear for the last few months. I think CFS is still to make final decisions, but not sure why the delay. I know of one company that is ready to sell now.

I have tried on a set and it seems like great gear. Some minor flaws but nothing is perfect. If CFS signs up to the Lion maintenance contract then gear will be maintained professionally by Lion. Lets hope that happens.

I would love to hear any news on this. Anyone in the know?

Incident Operations / Anything interesting
« on: January 03, 2005, 10:59:30 AM »
We watched the lighting coming. No doubt caused concern for some.
I believe there was a few fires from lightning  strikes one at Two Wells contained quickly. Also some localised damage such as trees down around salisbury.
