Air horns are great to get attention heading into an intersection, round about or towards traffic lights.

these days with airconditioned cars fitted with nice radios, cd players, mp3 players, I think better lights would be better - i.e. head light flashers on high beam, more forward facing lights at rear vision mirror level!!!!!!!!!!

Also better at night, theres nothing worse than cruising through suburbia at night with the sirens going waking every man and their dog - not only is it annoying for the crews but does not serve to do mush other than wake the entire neighborhood up and them a little annoyed!

All Equipment discussion / Re: Murray Bridge's new Pumper
« on: September 18, 2006, 11:43:52 AM »

At least Murray Bridge have large and expanding industry in their primary response area for which they are responsible! Their urban/industrial risks are increasing.

Thats easy fixed, give the area to the MFS then they wont need it.

Yea right - trying to keep MFS inside their boundaries across the state is hard enough!

At least MB CFS can respond with a crew each time thier pagers are activated - not the same can be said for another service in Murray Bridge.

As for giving areas away - better to start that in town first rather than looking in country areas!

Much easier to justify a pumper for Murray bridge than for Sailsbury or Burnside!

At least Murray Bridge have large and expanding industry in their primary response area for which they are responsible! Their urban/industrial risks are increasing.

Interest thought, that we would put in a pumper primarily on the basis of supporting MFS - I guess they will be paying for it due to their inability to meet their communities requirements can the constant calls to CFS to provide that service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All Equipment discussion / Re: Auto flow branches
« on: September 15, 2006, 01:48:39 PM »
Automatics are generally only good on pumpers with high pressure pumps. manual types are better on grass fire trucks where you need to conserve water.

Manual flow are excellent on pumpers - especially if you are contemplating gas cooling for a structural fire or dragging a HP line with lay flat for grassies.

Manual gives you the options, autos give you laziness!

Was a huge TFT fan until we took on Akron's and Protecs - now converted to manual flow branches and reaping the rewards  :-D

Thankfully some appliances have been spared from the CFS graveyard, for a while!

To be awared the National medal - recipents must have given dilligent service for 15 years - some brigades see it as an honour (which it is) not a medal for every tom, filtered and harry - thats what the volunteers medal was for!

« on: August 28, 2006, 05:42:37 PM »
Mmmm - pond slime green!

had the uniform supplied as an office - wore it maybe twice in 5 years - now have a nice blue shirt with the star on, looks far better and is less threatening in public, yet very dressy and corporate!

Plus looks good with the photo ID and CFS lanyard!

Hopefully, if it does happen there will be a very strong westerly behid it - then it can blow through into Victoria and hit their abrren scare from the Big desert fire a few year back!  far better than it blowing out into grazing and croppojg country!

Better still why chase it, monitor, watch and then protect the park boundaries!

Following recent incidets both here and interstate I'm sure the rewrite of the SOP will say all members must wear seat belts where fitted!

Common sence really - imaging a police car responding to an incident and the cops not wearing seat belts!

Comes back to Safety First!

SA Firefighter General / Re: Ship Fire in the late 80's
« on: August 28, 2006, 05:33:17 PM »
The incident was belived to have been caused by spontaneous combustion, in feed pellets. The incident was two fold, first the initial fire fighting to try and smother the smoultering fire and secondly the fire fight after the exlosion that injured a number of fire fighters and the ships crew - from memory.

CFS crews were regulary changed as the same appliances did stints of up to four days from memory, running to all of the normal jobs that MFS would have.

Nice to see the change of quarters (CoQ) principles are still there - the big difference today is that we are far better trained and equiped than we were then and CoQ isn't such a big deal - it just happenms

SA Firefighter General / Re: Paid CFS firefighters
« on: August 28, 2006, 05:11:04 PM »
Interesting - there is non mandatory requriement for them to join the UFU - deopendant on how an award was structured - i.e. Current CFS paid staff could join either UFU, however are in the public service association!

Having seen volunteer/career stations both in Australia and O/S - the main reason they don't work is personalities and mind sets - remove that and they work very, very well.

Good call Firefighter_SA.

CFS is a diverse group of people, covering diverse areas, with varying populations.

Interesting though, I sure many of our non urban interface brigades are used to driving an hour or more to get to a job and then in summer will spend at least 12 hours there (yes outside SOP direction) before returning home - yet I know many urban interface brigades are looking for relief crews within 4 - 6 hours.

Horses for courses!

At the ed of the day we all provide the same service, just our communities differ greatly. Nice to get a truck out the door when you are surrounded by 5,000 - 20,000 to choose from, not so easy when you are surrounded by 500 to 2,000.

......Also seatbelts must be worn in all cases of appliances moving code 1 or code 3
in Victoria.....something that needs looking at here down the track...
Reinforcement of the SOP - where seatbelts are fitted, they must be worn!

Reminds me of the fires in Vic a few years ago - where we had Vic Pol addres us, due to some of our crews standing on the back of some CFA appliances whilst in motion!

Gents - welcome to the reality that the rest of this HUGE state faces every year! Nice to see the SE joining the rest of SA!

Fear not though, a lot of areas of the state have had below avaerage rain fall for a few years now! Thankfully the community acknowledges this and does their part - more focused fire prevention and planning - maybe it may just be a little earlier for the SE this year  :-o

On forcable entry, there were some good articles written in the Volunteer a few years back on it - by Dale Thompson - aka the then Blackwood CFS Captain and MFS SO, with back up from some of his OS experiences!

Worth a read!

Is that the old one - CFA produced many years ago, or have they up dated it!

Interesting to se that many of us see response driving as an issue, yet corporately we can't look across the boarder and use what they have - as a starting point!

 easy tiger!

Wearing cherons on your polo also shows commitment to the community and they can see you have done something special and are a well dedicated member with chevrons on the shirt.  You have been drinking too much red cordial buddy

Sorry Lion Heart to offend - but do you really think that Mr Average down the street knows or even gives a toss what we have sewn or applicated onto our polo shirts! IF our community was interested, I believe we would see this in their support, not in their acknowledgment of what we wear!

« on: August 18, 2006, 12:49:42 PM »
Thats because SES have an open cheque book Andrew :-(

Obviously you haven't looked at the state budget - SES has a lot less money than any other ESO!!!!

The reason SES seam to be able to do it is because their association gets off it's bum and is proactive!

I have often looked at the SES mag and calender and wondered why the VFBA doesn't canvas for sponsors like the SES donkey. does - then we could have a free mag and calender too - plus with the VFBA running them they would be the voice of the volunteer, not just another HQ publication, editorial, information session etc - good to see our glossy Volunteer mag, however would be nice to see 50 percent plus of it being driven by Vols :-)

Fully sick mate!

Yes, I too have always dreamed of turning my CFS polo shirt, T-shirt and alike into boy scout shirts, with badges from one side to the other!

The pride I wear is my PPE/C - it shows my commitment to my comunity, my service and my dedication!

Robert - wake up, the pager has gone, that means the community needs assistance!

Your are not a credit to the service with that attitude! Nor are you a credit to the men and women of your brigade and your an insult to the thousands of CFS Fire Fighters who give up work, social time, rest and play to attend in their communities time of need.

maybe it's time you reassess yourself and your commitment to CFS!

Are you REALLY SERIOUS????????????

Incident Operations / Re: Dual Response
« on: August 18, 2006, 12:25:18 PM »
Interesting thought M. FIRE S.!

The struggle between paid - therefore the assuming (making donkey of you and me) that they should respond and deal with and volunteer who are appropriately trained!

Interesting to note - the recent industrial rescues, major building colapses/explosions etc in Adelaide have been undertaken by SES, with MFS on site to provide fire cover etc.

Redefining of roles and responsabilities is a sound thing and starts to address duplication of services - maybe this is the start of services focusing on their areas of expertise - not trying to be jacks of all trades and masters of none!
